splitsterds

The first wave of Inglourious Basterds promotional posters featured weapons, the second is featuring characters. After the break you’ll be able to see full versions of the first two sheets - one featuring Brad Pitt and the second, courtesy of The Quentin Tarantino Archives, featuring Eli Roth.

The friendship and collaborations between Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth have drawn a lot of fire - heck, I thought they got enough flack individually - but absolutely nothing so far has dampened the enthusiasm I’ve had for Inglourious Basterds since I first read the screenplay. Indeed, quite the opposite is true. What with Gilliam, Tarantino and Chan Wook Park films screening at Cannes this month, I must admit that if I actually had a grandmother I might right now be researching her market value.

As premiered on Aint it Cool, here’s the first Basterd, Mr. Pitt himself:

And here’s another, the one and only Eli Roth Esq.:

Roth’s batting (ahem) three for three with me now with Cabin Fever being one of my favourite cabin-in-the-woods pictures and Hostel and Hostel 2 being my favourite horror films of the last ten years or so. There’s been a real hateful reaction to all mentions of those films in my posts before, which I find regrettable. I think the Hostel pictures are smart, angry, politically motivated films that address some very key ideas and social images of these times. The 60s had an awful lot of protest songs up born of the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam situation but we had relatively little from our big music acts regarding the Iraq war, supposed war on terror and the transgressions of the Bush era. Rushing into the gap, I think, were the Hostel films. I only wish we’d seen more of their ilk.

Footnote: I think George Romero did a good job with his two most recent Dead films, but they’re possibly even less popular. I don’t really get it.

You fail to mention that the "Transgressions of the Bush Era" are propaganda sold by an extremist leftwing mental think tank. So, if there is a film that "portrays" them as you speak of, it is merely pandering propaganda, and thus even more worthy of the dustbin than can be imagined. The worst thing the Bush administration did was to take it lying down. At least my comment may provide fodder to remind you that there is another side to things, and though much of your audience may be leftwing, not everyone thinks in the same terms.
  • Matt
An extremist left wing thinktank came up with the idea of torturing civilians? Wow, I got it all wrong!
  • THE_FAN
Don't believe everything you hear on Bill O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh's shows. I'll take care to do the same for Olbermann. Fair enough?
  • Bull
I am not left wing, in fact I have some real conservative points of view. However, labeling Bush a true conservative is something a dumb, uneducated moron would do. Spending billions on war while pandering to the religious right is just pathetic. His supporters are the same.
  • Bunk
You are right. /film should really take some time to pander to the "retarded minority."
  • Troll. You know that most people here are going to flam you, yet you continue. You are either laughing at the responses and your thumb-downs or starting a flame war elsewhere as I type.

Wow, I didn't know there were many hillbilly hick redneck right wing film fans. Roll over and die, yankee.
  • JimmyTheGhost
Brendon you have some good taste, my man. Eli Roth is one of those celebrities that gets too much flack for what he's worth. He's made three films and it's like he's Uwe Boll or something. Cabin Fever is one of my favorite teenage horror films as well. After reading Inglourious Basterds and finding out Roth would play the Bear Jew, I was super excited. His horror background will bring the perfect tone to the character.

Great. two bad actors in one film. throw in Mike meyers and that makes 3 crappy actors. LMAO! I thought Troy and meet joe black were Pitt's worse films until I watched 7 years in Tibet and The devil's own. he pretty much gives the same bland acting in all of them. Horrible actor and Horrible accents. Don't even get me started on Benjamin Button crapfest. How the hell did he manage a nomination for best actor for that one? He gave two decent performances in his career. Twelve monkeys and Fight club. Flukes and they weren't even that great. I can picture ten actors who woulda done a better job in both movies.
  • I almost took your post seriously. Almost.
  • You can't get better than Brad Pitt in Snatch!
  • gregt
Eli Roth is a super cool and smart guy. It just sucks that he's also a bad actor and director.
  • Jack
i would honestly like to hear the "ten actors" that would been a better Tyler Durden in Fight Club. Brad Pitt in that role to me is one of those stars aligning perfectly between the part and actor. i can't think of any actor that would possibly play the role as well as Pitt.
  • Yeah, what the fuck? Fight Club should have been Pitt's Oscar winner. Dude's going to end up like Paul Newman winning an Oscar for something silly because the powers that be suddenly realize he's been doing great work for the last 40 years.
  • musicsoup
Eli Roth's chest hair should get its own poster. I guess if his character is named Bear Jew, it kinda makes sense. I know some pretty hairy Jews myself.
  • starscream9289
    Look at that chest hair!
  • First off this is my most anticipated movie of the summer. Second I love both Kill Bill movies, Death Proof, and the FIRST Hostel movie. I really enjoy Eli Roth and he is one of the most interesting people in Hollywood. He looks amazing in everything I have seen so far and I think Brad Pitt is the least interesting part of this whole movie. I do usually agree with Brendon more then anybody else on the website. I really did also respect the Halloween reboot a hell of a lot more then the Friday the 13th reboot and am interested in H2 as well. So good job Brendon I really enjoy reading your stuff and keep it up!
  • Brandon I 100% agree with you.
  • BRENDON_FAN
Too bad there's no Brandon on this website.
  • josh p
    ...or is there
  • This is going to be a great film. No one can hype a film like Tarantino, but I still think it's going to awesome.
  • True. Some of us don't think at all. They do things like talk ask God for advice instead of a former president (who happens to be their father) before invading another country.
  • Ryan
I agree wholeheartedly. Eli Roth's films have given me a lot of hope for the future of the horror genre. I'm glad there are people out there who can agree.
  • matt
Tarintino: This is a film I've wanted to get made for years and years, it's really special to me, I originally envisioned Arnie and Bruce Willis starring in it and smashing Nazi skulls!

Me: Cool, so how's filming going? Who've you cast?

Tarintino: I couldn't get those guys so I just called up my director friend with minimal acting experience, I hope he's decent! Oh and I'm rushing the production of "the film I've wanted to make for years" to release it in time for Cannes.
  • TARANTINO FAN
Take your hate somewhere else. Everyone else here loves QT.
  • To be fair, it sounds like Matt is more disappointed with Tarantino rather than hating on him. I'd even venture a guess that Matt is a fan. I can certainly see where he's coming from. I mean, seriously, Eli Roth? Really?? Buscemi, Stoltz, a no-name, ANYONE would be better.
  • Geist
I agree. I mean Roth is a character in itself but not casted to play something else. If anything a minor role but as someone like this...? Well he can only prove us wrong and that's all we can hope for.
  • character posters are kinda boring.
  • ChanceSpudder
Eli Roth is a badass, and something tells me he's going to rock the shit in IB. I'm batting for you, Eli, fuck shit up.
  • Chance Truth
Roth can seem like a blowhard sometimes, but I really dug "Hostel," and the man deserves some kind of award for that "Thanksgiving" trailer. Going from the trailers for "Basterds," it seems like he's got the right just-this-side-of-a-cartoon attitude.
  • I read the screenplay last night, just for giggles, and I enjoyed it so so much...so anything 'Inglourious Basterds' I'm def excited to see...
  • The_Kid
I really like these posters and I agree with you on the whole Roth situation, I like his movies especially Cabin Fever. I really hope he makes Thanksgiving.
  • Dirk Diggler
shouldn't the post be about inglourious basterds and not eli roth's movies?
  • Hmmmm....A muscled up Jew playing a muscled up Jew? What was QT thinking?!

Eli's playing a madman who bashes Nazi skulls with a bat. How hard can it be?

The background to these character posters are kind of, well, weak though.
  • topheavy
Hey, I don't think that this is the age of understanding or enlightment... Nice try though.
  • Eli Roth is a hack. Check out his performance in Death Proof, then watch the horrible (lack of) direction in any of his 'films' for evidence of this.
  • I have to agree with you Brendon. I don't see why people hate Eli Roth, he's made a few good movies and doesn't suck as an actor.

Oh and I agree with you that George Romero's last few movies were good and don't see why most don't like them. His earlier efforts were alot better but his later movies aren't terrible.
  • Tipp Total
This film is the formula for how to keep yourself from falling into Director Hell. Make a Jewish propaganda Movie. Pretend that Jews actually fought back in WW2 and pick Nazi's because they have never been used as bad guys.

If making a Pro Fascist Jewish Propaganda Movie isn't up your alley, then make a move about a gay, native-American female Veteran with a disability who is being thrown off her land by "the man." Add a black co-star as the source of wisdom and Ashley Judd as the white girl who is going to help and you can pull yourself out of director hell as well.

I would want to see a movie about Anne Frank, the lesbian.
  • I disagree with Brenden. Eli roth has certainly been influential to 'today's horror' but that is not necessarily a good thing. His scripts and dialogue and direction are piss poor. Saying they are the best horror films of the past ten years doesnt say much, but it's still a bit of an honor those films don't deserve.
You say "I think the Hostel pictures are smart, angry, politically motivated films that address some very key ideas and social images of these times." Sorry, but i personally think that is a bunch of bullshit, and to prove that point you would have to analyze hostel to an extent deeper then the thought eli roth put into it. I understand the movie is (somewhat intentionally) hypocritical. It is about turning violence into entertainment. But i would argue that eli roth is so much more excited about the shock value violence then actually critiquing the culture. Thats why the movie does not work, is not smart, and is not even a halfway decent horror film.
  • avraham
Fuck the Nazi Germans and blessed is the Jewish bat smashing German Nazi skulls!
  • Leah16
Eli Roth is a hottie in Inglourious Basterds :)
  • Johnny America
OK I am kind of sick of the Jews forcing their agenda down my throat, I get it , you want me to hate who you hate in the Nazi's, espouse "Jewish Vengeance" throughout the entire movie and secure Tarentino's place in Hollywood relevance by pandering to the Zionist Ideology. I can barely stand this anymore. I already hated the Nazi's before this movie. Now I think I am starting to................
