Ben Stiller Directing

Ben Stiller has found a project worthy of being the possible follow-up to his 2008 action comedy hit Tropic Thunder. Mark Friedman’s dramedy Help Me Spread Goodness was one of the screenplays featured on the 2008 Black List (a Hollywood insider list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year).  The script tells the story of a Chicago banker who gets duped out of his son’s college fund by an email predator, and travels to Nigeria to confront those who ripped him off. Sounds like a pretty funny premise.

Of course, Stiller is still attached to Steven Spielberg’s leftovers, the Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama The Trial of the Chicago 7. It’s not that I have no interest in seeing that film, I just don’t have any interest in Stiller’s take on the Chicago 7 story. Don’t get me wrong, Stiller has proven himself as a good comedy director with Thunder and the cult hit and early Apatow-produced Jim Carrey dark comedy The Cable Guy. But I’d just rather see someone with a more dramatic background take on the Chicago 7 project. Plus, Help Me Spread Goodness seems like a much better fit all around.

  • From what everyone's saying, it sounds like Stiller has the directing chops to make good movies. I guess we'll have to wait to see what he can do with this.

I have no idea how it would turn out, but I'd freaking love to see Stiller direct Aaron Sorkin's dialogue. It could be terrible, could be great, could be something like the Cable Guy. I think it'd be a worthy experiment.

In all likelihood though, Help Me Spread Goodness would be a better movie.

I'd see either. Stiller's really earned his stripes in the past few years as a director, I'll give any of his movies a shot.

i have a hard time believing that a banker would fall for such a scam, but hey, it's comedy.
  • hah! I love those Nigerians and their scam efforts! This is going to be so awesome.
  • Bud Cort has to play the main character. But I fear it will be someone that's more publicly known right now. I love him in Life Aquatic.
  • bud cort? really? thats the best you came up with?
  • Stiller is a great director. Tropic Thunder and Zoolander are his best films, both as a director and actor.
  • If anything I think Stiller's mix of drama into a few of his comedies, make me want to see his take on a full out drama. He's shown he's talented. I'd rather see a talented director from another genre try and emerge himself into another genre. Rather than see a talented director with a particular style that we've seen over and over tell another drama.

Say what you will about his paycheck comedy roles, but Stiller is a really good director. "Reality Bites", the underrated black comedy "The Cable Guy", "Zoolander" and "Tropic Thunder" have all been really, really solid. I can't wait to see this next project.

Sounds like an episode of Dateline... just with more laughs.
  • As long as Downey Jr. plays the Nigerian scam artist, I'm there. Are any of the black list scripts available online? I'd like to read them.
