Variety have announced a new project from Zhang Yimou, director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers. They call it Amazing Tales - Three Guns and describe it as having two separate parts, one a thriller and the other a comedy. It’s hard to not suspect this is the result of a bad translation and simply, the film is to be a comedy-thriller or, as we might say, one part comedy, one part thriller, just mixed parts.

Here’s the bizarre bit, though. Monkey Peaches are reporting a rumor that the film is a remake of Blood Simple. Very, very odd.

The exceptional and distinguished Blood Simple, in case you haven’t seen it, was the first feature by Joel and Ethan Coen and pretty much set out their most played pieces out on the chessboard. There are double crosses, illicit affairs and a post modern melange of noir tropes. In just this film and their next, the delirious screwball comedy Raising Arizona, you can pretty much see the entire Coens film catalog] in embryo.

The Monkey Peaches report makes it sound like the new project has taken the Blood Simple plot and relocated it in both space and time. It seems that they’re hoping for some martial arts in there too, which the Coens certainly didn’t include. The site appears to have contacted Zhang Welping, the film’s producer, but he wouldn’t commit to either a full denial or confirmation. Instead, the best Monkey Peaches could attribute to him is that it was “possible” that the film was based upon “a Hollywood movie”.

Remakes are controversial at the best of times, but I suspect this one sounds more palatable than most, spiced by the big changes necessary. Personally, I think nothing is sacred and anything stands to be done over and the resulting remake need only be judged once it is finished, even when the original is a film I love as much as those by the Coens’.

It was previously reported that Zhang Yimou would next be making a film about the Nanking Massacre, based upon a novel by Yan Geling. Unless I’m very much mistaken, a previous novel by Geling was adapted into a screenplay by Ang Lee so, from my limited vantage point on Chinese Culture, she appears to be a not insignificant writer. I’m hopeful we’ll also get to see that project come to fruition one day.

  • no. no. no Coen remakes EVER.
  • I hope this isn't the case. No one can remake a Coen's Bros. film. It is impossible I tell you!
  • This could kind of be good. I think?
  • Justin Craig
Are you kidding me!!!?? It's good that great films are being exploited in lieu of creating original ideas and that great pieces of work are being tainted by shitty remakes??? Yeah. That's really good. Maybe you should just stop posting.
  • Ben
Leave the Coen Bros. movies alone!
But I will allow Rob Cohen movies to be remade. Because they suck.
  • I'd love to see this. Zhang Yimou is a brilliant director and an even better cinematographer and one of the few fifth generation Chinese artists to really carve a name for themselves at home and in the Western world. By the way if anybody hasn't heard of/seen much of Zhang, I'd suggest watching 'Yellow Earth' (1984), he was the cinematographer on this beautiful film and his three best films as a director (in my opinion); Red Sorghum, Raise The Red Lantern and The Story Of Qiu Ju.
  • I agree that those are great films and I do feel slightly bad for not referencing them in the post. For brevity I went with the ones I felt most /Film readers were likely to be more familiar with.
  • Red Sorghum was the only film out of those three you mentioned that I saw, and it was just fantastic. A very good film, highly recommended.
  • Justin Craig
You're right. Yimou is a brilliant director. So why doesn't he come up with his own ideas instead of ripping things off of the Coens??
  • If this rumor turns out to be true, Zhang Yimou is a dead man.
  • Strange. I love Zhang Yimou though, so I'll give anything he does a chance.
  • SIMPLE_FAN
I absolutely love Blood Simple, and I think it couldn't have ever been done as effectively without the Coens. I am not on board with this.
  • the original is something of a comedy and thriller at the same time... after viewing, watch with the commentary by Kenneth Loring...

    movie... magic

How about I remake my breakfast in the form of a number two on Zhang Yimou's face? I promise the result will be much different than the original.
  • ANGRYBROOMSTICK,

Almost every American remake of an Asian film is better. The Departed wipes the floor with Internal Affairs, The Ring was much better than Ringu. If this is true I expect this "remake" to bomb.
  • krazyguy
Have u seen the Asian versions?! Infernal affairs was far superior to 'The Departed' and lets not forget remakes have the advantage of polishing or changing bits that didn't work so well in the original.

And Ringu again was much better. The ghosts in the movie actually have some cultural connection to Japanese culture whereas they were just scary Japanese ghosts in the American remake.

Don't be so ignorant to claim such stupid things. Hollywood is the most famous but also has the most inferior movie output compared to numerous other film industries.
  • ----
Ringu was definitely not superior to the remake, although it was certainly eerie, it lacked the polish and refinement that the remake ultimately had. The fact that it used a "scary japanese ghost" was probably one of its strengths, it brought something unique and different to an american horror film, rather then the typical bloody boogey man.

Unfortunately after the glutton of asian remakes featuring the same idea I can see how people would grow tired of it, but you have to remember that The Ring did it first, and certainly did it the best.

If there are 2 directors that are good enough to warrant NEVER having their films remade...it's the Coen Brothers. Some people...
  • XCVBN
    no fucking way
  • cantona_x
As reported in mainland, the movie is mixed with comedy and horror instead of seperate parts, featured one hottest drama actor and one hottest comedian, and they will have bunch of scenes together.

Previous rumor said Zhang will adapt NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, now more news referred to BLOOD SIMPLE, either way, it probably would turn out to be terrible, I just don't see him with any black humor.

Anyway, in China, Zhang's serie of period movies has made his reputation worse and worse in the movie buffs, the HERO is mixed to negative reviewed, and that HOUSE OF WHATEVER movie is mostly received as unintentional hilarious.
  • Part of any Cohen brothers film is their unique dynamic that can just never be replicated. Any director who takes on a Cohen remake deserves kudos, that is one bold step to make.
  • hah! Now Hollywood gets a taste of its own medicine... a foreign filmmaker doing a remake of an AMERICAN film (since Hollywood is always remaking so many films from East Asia)
  • Smash
How is remaking a small, independent feature going to bruise the cheek of the Hollywood studio system? Use your head.
  • Justin Craig
lol. Seriously. No one's hurt here except film audiences and the Coens. Very unfortunate.
  • Dave Mackay
Thank goodness, the Coen Brothers never remade any much loved and iconic movies. That would be a real (lady) killer blow.
