District 9 Teaser Trailer

District 9

Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the first teaser trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, which you might see before X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As you probably know, Blomkamp is the South African born commercial director who was hired to direct a big screen adaptation of Halo before “financial problems” forced the project back into development heck. District 9 is super secret sci-fi project produced by Peter Jackson, based on Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg.

The film depicts a fictional world where extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa. Wikus (Sharlto Copley) is a Multi-National United agent who becomes infected by alien biotechnology. He must go on the run from the oppressive government into District 9, a internment camp where “non-humans” have been forced to live since landing on Earth nearly 30 years ago.

If you’re going to see Wolverine this weekend, you might want to wait to see this trailer on the big screen. I can tell you that when I saw “the big reveal” on the big screen during the ShoWest presentation, I almost shit my pants. The ship just looks amazing on the big screen, especially in the doc-style the movie is filmed in. Some people might be disappointed that they blur out the alien’s face, but I think that adds to the mystery of the project, and makes you want to see what’s behind the censored box. Watch the trailer after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com . District 9 will hit theaters on August 14th 2009.

  • This looks amazing. When you see the first shot of that ship, it's stunning.
  • WOW! Count me there, first day. Christ!
  • I've been waiting for this trailer for so long, and my expectations were pretty up there, and it certainly does not disappoint. Looks incredible, and I believe this movie might actually have more thought in it than Star Trek or Terminator.

Sci-Fi fans should watch out for District 9 and Moon this year (and Avatar too, obviously).
  • That looks absolutely amazing. This makes the hole in my heart for Blomkamp's Halo ache a little worse.

hmmmmm intriguing ! im thinking this could be one to watch
  • ive been fucking waiting for this! not what i expected but non the less, i am still dying to see more from it.
  • Fucking sick. Gonna be awesome.
  • Scififan
This movie is going to be awesome.
  • Just an FYI, the trailer is not attached to Wolverine. It is loose in the can with select prints (though it wasn't with my print). The only film attached to Wolverine is Night at the Museum 2.

you should work on this site. hate when they say that and I never see the trailer
  • looks like it's going to blow me away.
  • Neither this or the new Transformers 2 trailer was in front of my 12:01 showing of Wolverine.

I was mildly upset when I read about Halo falling through... but the tone and composition of this teaser is enough for me to forget about any woes I might have had. Thank you, Mr. Jackson. Sci-Fi is fucking back with a monster attack. Count me in.
  • I am going to watch this. End of story. It is awesome.
  • Holy shit that looked amazing. Can't wait too see this.
  • i think blurring his face is awesome! i was disappointed a teeny weeny bit when i sa cloverfield and the soldier's face wasn't pixelated...

i'm happy i watched the trailer BEFORE i read the description, had no idea the 'they're not human' line was coming!!!

Now that's a summer movie. The beginning is kinda how I see World War Z being as a film. Anyway, looks very interesting. I'm there.
  • I just got back from Wolverine and there were no good trailers. I got stuck with Up(already seen tons of trailers), Ice age 3, and Night at the Museum 2... I almost forgot that I was seeing an action movie :(
  • Weyland_Yutani
Thoughtful science fiction being made amid an alarming trend of unthoughtful crap. Films like this and Moon are a very welcome sight. I know where my money is being spent this Summer.

It's no coincidence that they have attached Cliff Martinez' music from Soderburgh's Solaris to this trailer. It's a nice choice.
  • I saw the short film and it's amazing.
  • Looks good, yet what kind of interrogation questioning is that? Going from why are they there and why they don't just leave, to suddenly, how the weapons work. Slow down there chief. ;)
  • Karl
Where did this piece of awesomeness come from? This is indeed the year of scifi. I wish Avatar could be revealed that same way. No big announcements, no long waiting, just an awesome HD trailer at the end of the week.
  • Gorgeous piece of art is always a welcomed sight. The ship looked amazing and the documentary path the choose to take works well. I hope the aliens in the film also have an interesting background although it would be through human interpretation.

I really want to see the next trailer and the movie even more. This has definitely peaked my interest. It was presented in an exquisite fashion.

Bloomkamp and Jackson are definitely going to get whatever budget they wanted for the "Halo" movie they were planning to do. I'm completely sold that these two talented guys can make a visually exciting "Halo" adaptation with interesting laced storytelling to go along with it.

I'll definitely be at my theater on August 13th at midnight.
  • What this movie needs is a Dr. Zoidberg cameo.

In all seriousness though: I love how this movie, if I understand things correctly, in a way, seems to present itself as the anti-The Day The Earth Stood Still. The aliens are not here to save us, they're here to seek refuge. And even though us humans still do The Human Thing and approach them with arrogance, this movie somehow seems to present a much likelier scenario: careful, investigative approach instead of gung-ho tactics, etc.. Plus: the focus on the innocent bystanders; the humans directly affected by the aliens' arrival, reminds me of Busiek's 'Marvels' in a way, which.. if they can keep it up.. would be a very great thing, indeed.
  • Looks great!
  • Saw it on the big screen last night and I think it looks amazing, even though I guess I'm in the minority when it comes to not liking the blurred out faces. I know they don't want to tip their entire hand in the first trailer, but this didn't work for me. Too much of a tease.
I do love the way the movie looks and feels though, not to mention a story that feels fresh. It had a tone that made me think of Half Life 2 to tell ya the truth. That grim, dirty future where things are rather bleak. Definitely seeing it opening weekend.
  • I don't like the blurred out face-- it's like a parody or comedy, although this is supposed to be a serious, dramatic film.
  • I know you can't see much of the blurred faces in the trailer, but from what you can see, the visual style of the aliens looks very similar to Blomkamps short film Alive in Joburg.
  • Captain Molotov
Fuck - really wish this weren't coming out so far away from now! August seems like an eternity from now.

I did see this last night with Wolverine and it rocked my shit on the big screen.
  • Now THIS looks like a science-fiction film I could sink my teeth into. Star Trek, on the other hand...
  • Justin
Aliens in South Africa? Aliens that can sit down and talk with humans? Giant ship and Halo-style music?

PJ and Neil are probably making this movie to prove they can make a good Halo movie.
  • i don't think pj has to prove anything to anybody.
  • None of those things listed are exclusive to "Halo". These are themes that have existed since the early 1900's in literature. Not sure where you're getting the Halo-style music from though.
  • here is the short film this movie is based on. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-11858122... seeing as this comment will never be seen because i am moderated, you may want to just make a new post of this. its great though. worth watching.
  • wow... another must-see for me.
  • Dvq
aliens here seeking refuge? i can totally dig that! should be awesome!
  • Aliens taking refugee sounds a bit like 'Alien Nation' to me, if anyone still remembers that movie and the series :-).
  • kyle
That looks awesome, cant wait to check it out.
  • just enough footage to leave you wanting more.. Looks great
  • The footage looks good but need more about Wikus
  • My anticipation for this film just soared. That ship shot alone was stunning, and how they hid the extraterrestrial just ignites the viewers curiosity. It's just awesome, haha.
  • Cole
    holy crap...........
I knew this was gonna rock but.....Holy CRAP! That ship was freakin insane!
  • absolutely brilliant! finally something fresh! im tired of reboots/remakes! im also looking forward to moon and avatar
  • This looks amazing. When you see the first shot of that ship, it's stunning. The mosaic doesn't bother me either, because it gives it a "documentary" feel. Just like what he did in the short film.

I'm glad to see this recent sci-fi revival and new blood like Blomkamp come into the fold. He's a welcomed breath of fresh air.
  • CamelSpit
Is the original short online anywhere? After seeing that, and reading everything there is on this film, I'd love to have a sample tasting.
  • it's on youtube

After seeing the mosaic over the alien's face and reading your comment, I wonder if "District 9" is supposed to be part comedy. You're right, it does give it a "documentary" feel to it. Now that I think about it, it seems a little comical that they blur out the alien's face when they actually do that to certain people in documentaries.
  • How does that make it comical? They do this in documentaries and police interrogation videos to protect the person they're interviewing from retaliation. If anything it adds to the the somewhat realistic feel they're going for here.

Especially when the alien follows the guys fingers when he goes to turn on the recorder. Loved that part.
  • Bryan
    ......Awesome.

    Great Solaris music, too.
