Excuse me for never having read Geoff Darrow’s Shaolin Cowboy comics but I know some of his other work, most initmately his illustrations for Frank Miller’s ultra violent Hard Boiled, and I’ve heard of both Shaolin monks and Cowboys. Oh… and I also know that, according to Variety, the comic is being adapted into an animated feature by Darrow himself.

They note that the producers on the film are to include the Wachowskis. No surprises there as Darrow has not only inspired them indirectly before (see The Matrix) he’s also collaborated explicitly with them too (see… er… The Matrix, for which Darrow contributed concept art).

Indeed, the original Shaolin Cowboy comics are published by BurlyMan Entertainment, a company seeded by the Wachowskis and named with the fake, in-production title they used for the Matrix sequels.

Darrow has an intensely detailed style, facilitated by him creating the artwork at a greatly increased scale than in the eventually published issues. I can almost imagine this film being shot in the IMAX format, but even if it does end up being originated on 35mm film or HD video, as I’d expect, it will most likely benefit from being watched on a very large, very high quality screen, and probably many times over.

The premise of Shaolin Cowboy can be summed up simply - a Shaolin monk becomes a Cowboy - but the specifics fall way outside of such a predictable, simple logline. For example, the second lead character is apparently a talking mule called Lord Evelyn Dunkirk Winniferd Esq. the Third. I’m told that there’s also a city on the back of a lizard, a martial arts fighting crab with nazi insignia plastered on it, chainsaw fighting with sharks and other things that, frankly, would make an incredibly  hard sell to a mainstream cinema audience - as if that really matters one jot. All the same, I hope there’s more to this than simply a string of outrageous and absurd whims.

The comic was in the works for three years before Burlyman started publishing it but requires pages so detail-sodden that Darrow is already taking a full year to get issues wrapped. Who knows how difficult it is going to prove creating a moving version of this thing? Good luck to all in their wild ambition.

    Whoa! Good news!
No seriously SM is a really great book to be adapted to film.
Please don't cast Jackie Chan as the Monk tho...
I'd say the main reason the Wachowskis are involved is that SM is published by Burley Man press which is their comic company.
Every SM issue has a preface written by them as well, spoken by the ass the Monk hangs out with. I think the ass could steal the movie if done right.

While they're at it then should adapt Doc Frankenstein as well.

Sorry only read the first page so I didn't see the Burlyman reference.
As to it being to whimsical and without structure enough for a movie?
Yeah it probably is but no more than say, Fear and Loathing.

I feel sorry for whoever is chosen to animate this...or anything from Darrow. It will take years!
  • hmm...yeah well good luck with that. I'll wait unti the cake is done

The detail will be insane! And Hard Boiled is a great, nonsense filled book that makes me excited for this project.

Though the last SM was a long whiles ago - the movie project is probably why Darrow is taking so long with the next issue.
  • "All the same, I hope there’s more to this than simply a string of outrageous and absurd whims"

NOPE. But that right there is the beauty of Shaolin Cowboy. It's pure.
It's exactly what Darrow wanted to draw without regard for public opinion. You don't so much read it as let yourself drown in hyper-detailed absurdity. I hope the movie lives up to that quality. Or even happens.

We waited for a year for one of the comic book issues to be drawn. That was a full year for Darrow to create less than 30 some pages of UNMOVING pictures. Albeit they were incredibly beautiful. How long will it take to create an animated movie that captures Darrow's absurd and intricate detail? I want to be psyched, but this will be years and years in the making. A passion project on the level of Smile by Brian Wilson perhaps?

Very cool if it can get finished and out there, but I'm going to try and pace my excitement. It's going to be a long haul.

Hmmm. I didnt really care for Shaolin Cowboy comics myself, you are right that it is venturing on absurd. I just didnt feel like he did his research on monks when he wrote it, not saying he had to be authentic but just felt like it was to over the top for me and I am pretty far out there as it is.

Still the premise of a movie sounds interesting, I cant help but be curious now.
  • "a martial arts fighting crab with nazi insignia plastered on it, chainsaw fighting with sharks"

    I'm there.

"Nazi insignia" is probably a misnomer, considering that the swastika is originally a Hindu and Buddhist symbol meaning "purity" which Hitler turned backwards. The crab is sporting Buddhist swastikas, seeing as he too was trained by the monks of Shaolin Temple.

Yea this sounds really great. I think mainstream audiences will go for it if it's not really bloody and stuff. But who cares? I want chainsaw fighting sharks
  • EmilyFalcon
What?? I'd totally go see a movie with nazi crustaceans and reptile cities!
I don't know what you're thinking, but that just sounds epic.
Plus, sharks, man. Sharks make everything better. XD
  • Holy balls this is going to be the ultimate midnight stoner flick.
  • whap
SWEET!!! An animated feature is about the only way to do Shaolin Cowboy any justice.

    SHANGHAI NOON PART 2!?
  • Darrow_Fan
Is he working with a Japanese animation company on this?
