Ridley Scott is Considering Alien Prequel/Reboot

ridley scott's alien

20th Century Fox head Tom Rothman revealed to IESB that there is “some talk” of an Alien “prequel” to go along with the recently announced Robert Rodriguez-produced Predator reboot Predators. Rothman confirms that director Ridley Scott is “toying around with the idea.” And the Fox head gives the impression that another Alien movie, be it sequel, prequel or reboot, would only happen with Scott’s involvement.

I remember reading an interview with Scott where the filmmaker expressed interest in making a prequel that would explore the origins of the space jockey and the Aliens. At one point James Cameron was working on an origin story for a fifth Alien film, but abandoned the development when Aliens vs. Predator was announced. Sigourney Weaver has publicly expressed interest in doing a sequel, but it wouldn’t make sense to include her character in an origin story. But who knows, maybe Ridley is “toying” with some kind of reboot/prequel combo.

  • As long as Ridley Scott gets complete creative control over the project then I'd be glad to see anything Scott whips up.

Rothman on the other hands needs to stay as far away as he can from this project. Give Scott the money and just let him create a film that won't be a complete joke to the franchise.

The less Fox/Rothman interference and tinkering the better.

Hmm. A prequel by the original director would be cool. A reboot unusually interesting but kinda weird. If only Cameron and Scott could somehow team up. A fan dream to be sure. Oh well. Keep us posted on this one.

  • As long as the suits don't hinder his vision then he and Cameron are the only people who should be allowed to touch this movie.
  • Also I remember the rumors of Scott and Cameron wanting to work together to do an Alien 5 years ago. But the suits kept fucking with their ideas and they left. I want a new Alien that takes place "after" 2. Instead of a prequel or reboot.

Scott or Cameron are the only people who should be trusted to lead these projects and bring them back from the "hammered to shit" dead state they've been in for years. My dream team would be Cameron/Scott and Nolan working on this as a unit somehow.

    But like I said, it's a "dream".

Captain Awesome, without hyperbole, best posts on here.

    also yes I remember that.

Rothman needs to fall on the sword
  • yeah I've heard that as well...what I've always been hoping for is a Hadley's Hope prequel...with James Cameron writing and Ridley Scott directing...

that amazing deleted scene made me crave the full bloodbath that must have occurred when 158 humans couldn't hold off the xenomorphs..."the last stand" would make an excellent prequel...

""At one point James Cameron was working on an origin story for a fifth Alien film, but abandoned the development when Aliens vs. Predator was announced."

Rothman =""Hmmmm Avp or Alien Origins by James Cameron......I'll go with AVP,'''
  • WANT WANT WANT WANT. But no Sigourney Weaver.. I like the whole aliens concept more then the actual character.. plus I dont think it would make that much sense to add her in a prequel.

am i seriously the only person contemplating hami kari because of all these god damn reboots and remakes? if i wanted to see nothing but movies that originated in the 80s i would add them to my netflix queue.
  • helicopters
    . . . i meant hari kari.
  • I think you mean hara-kiri. Hari kari was a Chicago sports announcer.
  • he should re-consider. there should be a new predator vs. alien film - except - take it off earth.... less human interference the better. Have seom kind of inter-glactic Tournament of Champions.

AVP killed any prequel/sequel. AVP misused the "ALIEN" creature for something NOT scary. Consequently, I fear that there won't be any in another ALIEN movie. Remember that Sigourney Weaver said something alike, not sure. However, I think thats the main problem ... Hopefully Ridley Scott can overcome this gap.

Prequel I could see but not a reboot.
  • Sev
I think the only thing that would not seem totally ridiculous would be a prequel or a true sequal after 2. I have seen the commentaries of Aliens 3 and Fincher talks about how all his ideas got gutted. A reboot? Thats such a "hot" word in Hollywood right now.
Exec 1: "Hey, remember when we made good movies with good ideas?"
Exec 2: "Well yes i do, but those days are long gone, you know that!"
Exec1: "Well, what if we 'REBOOT' those old movies....you know remake them, just better...."
    Exec 2: "Briliant!"
  • Haha wouldn't that be great if Ridley Scott "rebooted" his own film? But I guess this is good news. Better the man himself than another nasty slice of the AVP pie.
  • This is going to be amazing. and I hope Ridley Scott (or James Cameron) will create a new strong, fearless female character who will be as memorable as Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor.
  • Ruy
Alien, Predator and Videodrome are brillant movies that still work today, better than most of recents movies. They absolutely don´t need a remake. But I am ok for a prequel if Rothman don´t trash everything, especdially with a PG-13.
  • I'd definitely be down for something by Scott in the Alien milieu, although he seems to have an awful lot of projects on his plate and he ain't getting any younger. Also I don't think Cameron will be available, he's gonna be focusing on Avatar and probably making a franchise out of it if it succeeds.

I think Scott should concenrate on Forever War as "return-to-sci-fi" film.
  • thankyoufor
    NO!!!!
Alien is my favorite film of all time!!!!!
I'm so sick of AVP and Resurrection F'ing everything up Ridley needs to come back AND DO THISSS!!!!
    I would cry with joy!
  • A major studio needs to fast track this production, if Scott is genuinely interested. A Ridley Scott Alien prequel is the boost Sci-fi horror needs.

i love these two videos with a passion, it shows the need for a great director to work on the alien franchise again.
  • Hadn't seen that before, Stu. Thanks for sharing it.

Why not make a sequel to Alien Ressurection??? Make a proper Alien 5!
  • carg0
    are you idiots insane?

the aliens franchise was shot after the third one and humiliated after the fourth. it's over. don't talk to me about prequel/sequel bullshit. there's a reason this franchise has been left for dead since 'Resurrection'.

and since there's absolutely no point in making one movie, you start over with either a reboot/reimagining or some kind of lateral continuation.
  • Jim over at market saw 3D is floating the prequel in 3D rumor.
    http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2009/04/ridley-scot...
Although he dreams of everything in 3D.
  • i think he could do it so well. but i would rather he did another original sci-fi so i can have a new classic to love. i'm done with the aliens, but i will always love alien.
  • There is no way Scott would consider a reboot of the original. He feels it's just about perfect in every way as it is, even admitting he regrets the directors cut he made that was purely for publicity's sake and to introduce the film to a new audience.
  • Reboot (reimagining, whatever): terrible idea. Sequel: terrible idea. Film slotted into the chronology after Aliens? Not a bad idea, but that's a little too confusing to explain to the masses, even if you name it "Aliens 2." Which would be confusing in and of itself.

A prequel, however--if Ridley Scott was directing, a great writer did the screenplay, and if Giler and Hill stayed the hell out of the creative process--sounds frakkin' awesome to me. No issues with messing up the chronology. No issues with squeezing in an aging Weaver as Ripley. Just a cool, creepy, artistic film that takes Alien back it its (kickass) roots.

Sure, that's a lot of caveats. But if Ridley's interested, especially given the box office (and creative) bomb of AVPR, I've got to think Fox would be listening.
  • It sounds like Fox has realized the damage they have made to some of the stuff they've ruined. I hope that if this does happen, that it will be as good as the original few. I also think that they need a reboot because a direct sequel wouldn't be as good as anything done so far in the franchise.
  • Weyland_Yutani
    Missed this news. Yes, please.
  • Mark
Whatever happens, they need Giger back, especially if they are going to include the space jockey race of aliens.
  • grahammers
OMG! I love Sigourney but I'm just happy Ridley Scott is back!

I suppose if creative enough, it could be another sequel which explains the origins... and not purely a prequel.
  • whitetrash1989
as long as that ugly ass main charter isnt in it i will be awsome. if your gonna do that many movies at least make sure the mian person is acutlly good looking.
  • suchet
Yeah I heard about this - this new information sounds more definite than the previous snippets from interviews with Scott, Cameron and Weaver about a possible sequel or prequel.

At one point I heard that friends Scott and Cameron were both working on it together (Cameron writing and Scott directing).

I think the realistic possibility of this prequel has only become possible now with recent advances in visual effects technology (3D as in Cameron's forthcoming AVATAR movie.) - I mean the scale required to have one of those huge pilot creatures moving around on screen (previously seen dead, with a huge hole in its chest, and surounded by eggs in that huge ship in the first Alien movie).

Maybe this movie will explain what happened - maybe a queen had burst out of that pilot creature's chest or an even bigger creature maybe? i.e. Queen's mate or King Alien perhaps? etc

Im already looking forward to what Scott will bring to this new movie maybe we can see HR Giger coming back with some thrilling new creature designs?
