Christopher Nolan directing Christian Bale

Our friends at Total Film were able to corner Christian Bale about the prospects of a Dark Knight sequel, and the Batman star insists that “it’s got to be the right story”. When I talked with Bale last July if he would return for another one, he answered that he couldn’t “imagine doing this without Chris [Nolan],” and that he doesn’t “even want to consider” doing another film without Nolan.

It appears that Bale’s Lawyers have since explained that he has a contract because the Dark Knight star now admits to Total Film that “The fact is, I have to! I’ve signed up! Chris doesn’t. So I’m in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn’t want to!” I think everyone expects for Nolan to do another Batman sequel after he finishes work on Inception, but Chris has still not committed to a third film, and I’m surprised at just how patiently Warner Bros is being with their big comic book franchise.

(I want to clarify my last statement. I think that Chris Nolan is required to make a third Batman film. I have a lot of respect for Warner Bros giving him “his time.” Other studios would be pushy, wanting to go right into production on another one. As they say in the business world, you have to strike while the iron is hot. And the fact that WB is patiently waiting on Nolan show that they “get it”.)

  • he's the one... as batman or O'connor
  • Michelle
its just Conner if ur talkin about Terminator Salvation.
  • Not to be the spelling police but since you're correcting, it's Connor with two o's.
  • Bale is a smart actor and he knows that Batman won't succeed without Nolan at the helm of the franchise.

WB had a HUGE, HUGE hit with TDK and they know it would be foolish to rush Nolan into making another sequel. They have enough money for now, to keep themselves content.
  • I totally agree. They had the biggest cash cow, not only of last year, but 2nd of all time. It's in their best interest to let Nolan do his thing, and come back when he's ready and make the best possible 3rd film he can make. I think Warner is being smart this time around.

They're being exceptionally patient because Nolan provided an exceptionally successful movie. Sequels perform better financially when the previous film was a smash hit...Spider-Man 3 got record numbers because 2 was sensational, Pirates as well, etc. They rush this and bring in another director, they risk causing enough second guessing and fan upheaval (which, let's face it, the hardcore fans are what truly drove the repeat business for TDK) that the potential record-breaking third film no longer becomes record-breaking. It also helps that they already have some tentpoles out there and that the economy could get better by the time Batman 3 gets turned around. Best not to chop up the cash cow.

Nolan will sign on when he signs on...I'm 99 percent confident that he's just holding out in case the script that is accepted is truly, truly horrible.
  • If the script was really really horrible, wouldn't he just call his brother? lol
  • It's been close to a year now since The Dark Knight was released, but it took what three years for it to come out AFTER Batman Begins? And Nolan made The Prestige before he made The Dark Knight, and now he has Inception.

I don't think it's a matter of patience it's just a matter of business. They keep fans waiting with baited breath, wanting news on the next Batman. They know it will be big bucks but I am sure Warner Bros. spoke to Nolan about it. TDK did so well they pushed one Half Blood Prince to July 15th 2009 instead of the scheduled Fall release of 2008.

I highly doubt Warner Bros. will continue the Batman franchise without Christopher Nolan. They took a small risk of rebooting the franchise which had been totally butchered before, I think they will wait for Nolan to finish Inception, or hear the fans plead for more and have him put Inception on the shelf, but that won't happen IMO.

"I’m surprised at just how patiently Warner Bros is being with their big comic book franchise."

I'm not, Nolan made them a good chunk of change as well as making two amazing Batman films for them. Warners are simply being smart here by waiting, don't rush one out for the quick cash grab, but wait for the stars to align enough so that they get a really good movie out of it as well.
  • Dvq
    screw batman, gimme Inception!
  • thankyoufor
    I WANT BOTH NOW!!!
  • Actually, Nolan signed for the third Batman film long ago. It was part of his "Inception" deal.

Anyway, this "news" was kind of a given from the start, right? Bale, Caine and Freeman signed for a trilogy at the top. I think Oldman, too.
  • Not true at all... My WB sources tell me that Nolan is currently not signed for a third batman film. Inception was a deal in itself.
  • It might be what your sources tell you, but that doesn't mean it's "not true at all." ;)
  • nelson
if only fox took this approach with Brian Singer
  • Too true.
  • Duh! news of the day?
  • B RI
Warner Bros. is patient because they know that only Christopher Nolan can make another successful Batman film.
  • fex
    That's an absurd statement.
  • Just a guy
They're patient because he made them a BILLION dollars and if they piss him off they're back to Joel Shumacher type crap.
  • Infrafan
I'm confidant that if WB will wait, which I think they will, Nolan is back for the third, but it'll be the last for nearly everyone I'm sure. Maybe then Darren Aronofsky could step into the directing role. But let's face it, we've got several years to converse and debate this topic.
  • SSB
It seems likely Nolan will be back. But I agree this is probably the last one-for Nolan and probably Bale also. Then another director will be free to do their own take on Batman with no connection to the Nolan universe.
  • Let's get Burton back!
  • thankyoufor
ill torture you by making you watch barney the dinosaur if this happens lol
    but seriously NO
  • Cole
    oh please no...
  • Pike M
Dear lord, no. I'm not going back to that theatrical crap with the loud music and over the top villain acting.
  • filmkid
chris nolan will direct the 3rd Batman movie but he does not want to rush it plus he even said in a interview sometime last year that WB and him got a good relationship
  • "I’m surprised at just how patiently Warner Bros is being with their big comic book franchise."

You yell at the dog that's on the leash. You sweet talk the dog that's not.

With no offense to Nolan, of course. WB wants Nolan on the project (if they're smart). But if he's not committed, then he's on the high ground. As soon as he's committed, then can (and will) be as impatient as they want to be. But not right now. Right now, they've gotta coddle him, wait for him. Give him what he wants.

Gah. Good time to be Chris Nolan.
  • Zinc
I dunno about that, one of his brothers is wanted for murder and some bank robbery thing.
  • Cat
I don't think I would want the movie without Nolan either. Unless they bring in someone top notch.
  • WB is constantly doing things that show the "get it"
    I love that studio.
  • Cole
I am glad WB is waiting. I just wish other studios would do what WB is doing by thinking and saying hey if we want a lot of money (again) we should make a GOOD sequel not a summer fling.
  • And that is why Ari Gold appointed Dana Gordon to run WB! Because if Alan Gray was running this shit, we would've been fucked!
  • I don't know, I couldn't imagine a Guillermo Del Toro Batman.
  • If it was Fox Bret Rattner would already be lined up for the sequel
  • I think Nolan should turn it down and go out on top.
  • Whoever directed Batman Forever should do it again!
  • INS
    good news
  • INS
    good news
  • I don't believe WB would force Bale into a B3 if he insisted on waiting for Nolan. WB knows it's in the studio's best interests to keep both happy. Sure, there's a bunch of dumb-ass suits up there who would push to shoot it right now with Brett Ratner and Patrick Dempsey for a 2010 summer opening. (Sorry, I'm sure everyone just got sick a little, in their mouths. My apologies.) But the honchos at WB are smarter than that. At least a little bit smarter. They know a B3 without Nolan & Bale would suffer an enormous backlash penetrating into even the lowest common denominator viewership. I mean, this isn't Fox, for chrissakes.
  • Palmer
I doubt they'd want to alienate the fanbase by bringing on someone other than Nolan.
  • ----
    Yeah, keep deluding yourself.
  • ??? The previous Batman franchise did SO well without their initial director.

I think it would be mistake to move forward without Nolan, unless it's someone who REALLY has something in mind.
  • Goobity
WB is in charge. If Inception tanks, we'll hear news on a new Batman film sooner rather than later. In other words, if Inception makes money, Nolan is safe to bide his time. If not...WB may jump the gun and go a different way. They've done it before.
  • I'm pretty sure we will see it!
  • Well it makes sense why WB is being careful with Nolan.

Nolan delivered the most successful comic book adaptation to date. I don't think they want to pressure Nolan into anything that might cause him to not direct the third film.

Warner Brothers is pretty much giving him the time and space as to not lose one of their most valuable assets. I think its a pretty smart move on WB part actually.
  • If WB is smart their is no way they will do their next Batman without Nolan. They would be insane not to try and keep this guy around as long as they can. That being said I would be shocked if the next won't be his last. If he even does it at all.
  • It's too early to discuss, the last thing anyone involved with dk wants is to talk about doing another. a masterpeice like that takes endless time and effort. Its like Kubrick, so much blood, sweat goes into these films.
  • GIVE IT TIME, THE DESIRE WILL COME BACK... THE NEED TO BRING ANOTHER VILLAIN IN AND TEST BATMAN, TO DO IT RIGHT. NOLAN WILL BE BACK.
  • I'm really hoping the Nolan's come back for a third film. I guess it's cool though that we won't have the same thing happen with this franchise as it did with the earlier one. Of course I'm talking about having multiple Batmen.
