Russell Brand To Remake Drop Dead Fred

drop dead fred russell brand

Universal Pictures has announced that they are developing a remake of Drop Dead Fred for Russell Brand to star in. Saturday Night Live writer Dennis McNicholas has been hired to develop the project for Brand. McNicholas most recently wrote Land of the Lost for Will Ferrell and director Brad Silberling. THR says the plan is to remake the movie in the tone of Beetlejuice, “building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends.” Whatever that means.

The original 1991 movie starred Phoebe Cates as a young woman who battles with her controlling mother and womanizing husband, and finds comfort and confusion with the appearance of her childhood imaginary friend. The original film was bashed by critics, not particularly well liked by moviegoers, didn’t make much money at the box office ($13.8 million total), but has somehow developed a small but vocal cult following on home video.

I’m not sure why Universal is remaking the film. Maybe some child of the 1980’s executive was watching the original filmon cable television, noticed that the movie centered on a British comedian (Rik Mayall) with the same zany style of comedy that Brand sometimes employs. Universal appears to be in the Russell Brand business, producing the comedian’s US screen debut Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the upcoming spin-off Get Him to the Greek, and now this crazy remake. I’m a big supporter of Brand, but I’d rather see him in some more original concepts.

  • Anti Brand for the role of DDF
Nooooooooooooo!! Mayall is Drop Dead Fred - he owns the character. Brand could not do the role justice. PLease don't ruin one of my favourite films by putting an unworthy idiot in the role in a remake!!!

I loved the original Drop Dead Fred in fact it is one of my favorite movies, i could sit there nd quote the hole thing, I grew up with it since i was about 4 years old and im now almost 19 and i still watch it to this day. This is a fave film of mine. Drop Dead Fred is also a fave character from my childhood. Rik Mayall is Drop Dead Fred and no one else. This is just stupid. There is no way I could watch it. Its like the sequels of Dumb and Dumber and The Mask without Jim Carrey. Completely pointless. I do love Russell Brand but he should not so this.
  • david
No way! This would kill the film, kill Rik and just make everything good, bad. Brand is NO WHERE NEAR as funny as Rik.. and Brand just is not funny!! :@

DROP DEAD FRED IS AWESOME SHUT UP DOUCHERS
  • alt3etf
I think it would be good with Russel but I think Noel Fielding would be even funnier...ah that would be good.
  • please,, nooo!
oh god, they better be joking.
drop dead fred is a classic movie, why can't it just be left alone???

russell brand is not that great, and a remake of drop dead fred will pale compared to the original... THIS WILL GO NOWHERE.

I love the movie "Drop Dead Fred" and I LOVE Russell Brand!!! So whatever he does I will see it buy it and watch it over and over again!!

Hollywood seems to be remaking everything and no matter how many people say that they are against it if sorry i mean when the film gets released they would all go to see it just to see how they've changed it.
still i think they should leave well alone. this is a great funny kids film that should not be touched by the money grabbers...of course they'll do it anyway.

I'm sure the new one will be fun. Personally I LOVED this movie. Back when it was mad and still today. I think it was so imaginative. I have been frustrated that I haven't been able to show it to my kids on line or rent it anywhere. I will always adore this movie. I am very surprised that it didn't do better in the box.

I love the original, and I love Rick Mayall, and I like Russell Brand. I don't know about the whole Beetlejuice spin, but I think it would be an interesting remake.

No, please, no. Leave Russel Brand in crap sex-comdies and keep him OUT OF MY GOD DAMN CHILDHOOD.

Drop Dead Fred is amazing. I grew up on it, and still to this day call it my all time favorite. I hope they don't screw it up with a remake.

Russel brand - my all time favourtie comedian.
Drop dead fred - my all time favourite movie.

I'm really looking forward for this movie and I think it will be fantastic. I really do believe that drop dead fred needs to be re-made. When I was younger I watched drop dead fred religously and I think when they re-make it, it will bring in a whole new fan base for the orignal.
  • I think Russel will be lovely as Fred. I can see in me eyes. His perversion and humor will fit in nicely with this film. I own the original and can’t wait to own this refresher.

Growing up, I watched Drop Dead Fred until the video was wrecked. Then I bought it on DVD. It is a great film with the character of Fred played wonderfully by Mayall. When I first found out about Russell Brand I hated him, but I grew to love him. Brand and Mayall are similar in that their act is but an extension of their personality. They are risky, scandalous and hysterical and I can't think of anybody more suited to a re-make of Drop Dead Fred than Russell Brand. The only potential danger I see in a re-make of such a cult classic is with the writer or producer missing the mark. Brand will amke a fantastic Fred, provided with the right script.

drop dead fred is an awesome film. I don't want to see it remade to the tone of Beetlejuice. They're different movies!! Stick with the original!
  • aly17
i've seen drop dead fred at least 50 times during my childhood (and no, i'm probably not exaggerating). I'm not sure if I like Russell Brand yet but I'm not so sure I like the whole likeness to Beetlejuice either. Not that that wasn't a great movie either, I just loved the innocence that the original had. I mean, my favorite parts were the flashbacks when Elizabeth was a lonely little girl with a really great friend. I don't want kids to think that Fred was a creep, you know? But that's just my opinion. I'm still gonna see the movie out of curiosity.
  • SANDY
    Looking forward to it.

    CANT WAIT

ugh no, don't remake this film.. no one cares about the kids today who haven't seen this film, it means so much to the 80s and 90s kids who love it! they're only doing to to make more money, it's unfair to us loyal drop dead fred fans.

Are you kidding? That'll be so GREAT. One of the best movies EVER!

I LOVE Drop Dead Fred, and would NOT liked to see it being remade. I'm sorry, but I just don't think they could do a better job. I love the original and that's what it should always be. Now we are going to raise a new generation that thinks this new remake was the first ever Drop Dead Fred, and we all know it is most definitely NOT. I hate when stuff like this happens. Besides, the guy doesn't even have red hair :( Boo!

I will be more than happy to see this remake, then I will decide whether or not it should of been remade.

i absolutely love the original drop dead fred. i am not so sure about remaking it though. i just dont think that anyone but the original actor for drop dead fred would do as good. russel brand is okay, but not drop dead fred worthy. i just really hope they dont screw this up.
  • sam
i HATE russell Brand, hes so not funny, and annoying. Why remake a good film? make something original!
  • ash
loved this film when i was younger and love russell, Fantastic casting, don't think much acting will be required on his part as personalities are sooo similar... can't wait..YAY!!
  • K
Russel Brand will be amazing in Drop Dead Fred!! It is one of my favourite childhood films, and even now still makes me laugh more than most other films. Russel Brand is also one of my favourite comedians, he was hilarious in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, so I really think that this new re-make will suit him perfectly. I can't wait to see it!! :D
  • Renee
NO WAY!, I love drop dead fred, it was my fav child hood movie and to remake it is an insult. Rik Mayall is a legend and all though i like Russell Brand he will never compare to Rik Mayall.
  • victoria
oh my gosh. i totally agree 1000%
  • Rob
Drop dead fred is a classic leave it that way Brand will kill it
  • Bubbles
Why the hell ruin the original Drop Dead Fred and trade Rik Mayall for sum totally idiot who only think of sexual antics ???? its bonkers his not right for the role at all and the film shouldnt be remade full stop !
  • Mandy
Loveeee this film :) my fave childhood movie, think Russell will do a great job.
  • SunShine McWane
Please god no! There is only one Rick Mayall. There is only one Drop Dead Fred. If the first wasn't commercially successful why redo it anyways? If they redo this it will pain me to see it and I will cry.
  • .
what a cunt russel brand isn't even funny and rik mayall is why even bother.
  • soooo not happy!!! this is stupid drop dead fred is an original and should not be remade it will just ruin it especially with russel brand taking rik mayall place ... just wrong
  • M
DROP DEAD FRED is the best movie ever!!!!! My favourite movie growing up actually! As for remaking it all the power to them, however the original kicks butt and it might be difficult to out perform it.
  • DGFHGFD
THEY SHOULD HAVE Will Ferrell PLAY FRIEND HE IS THE FUNNIEST
  • ArellaxDawn
YES!!! DO IT! I would go see this at the theatre at least 20 times!
I love both the movie and the actor. If they did a remake Rudssel Brand would do perfectly as Fred in my opinion.
I believe that Drop Dead Fred was just wrong for the time period it came out. Maybe there were too many good movies out and it didnt compare, but it does have its own charm to it.
In fact, after I post this I think I'm going to go watch it XDDD
  • Namby
One name Ive not seen mentioned in that aticle, Rik Mayall!!!!! I can see Russell Brand in the role, but Id rather see a film as a continuation of the story rather than a remake, he could be a new version of Fred, but Rik is the original. God forbid the original, a cult film, be washed out by a new version.
  • Stephanie
Russell Brand is a douche... and any remake of this film could not be anywhere near as great as the original!!!
  • No way Russell can pull off Rick Mayall's style of comedy - required to make Drop Dead Fred work. This remake is a crying shame.
  • Penrod
The only reason Drop Dead Fred achieved any sort of cult status was due to Rik Mayall. The Young Ones is an awesome show - one of my favs.
  • Not sure what to make of this news. It was my older sister's favorite movie growing up but I never really dug it. And I'm not entirely sure if I get the whole Russel Brand thing, although he is quite funny in a way out there kind of way when he's being interviewed.
