Russell Brand To Remake Drop Dead Fred

drop dead fred russell brand

Universal Pictures has announced that they are developing a remake of Drop Dead Fred for Russell Brand to star in. Saturday Night Live writer Dennis McNicholas has been hired to develop the project for Brand. McNicholas most recently wrote Land of the Lost for Will Ferrell and director Brad Silberling. THR says the plan is to remake the movie in the tone of Beetlejuice, “building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends.” Whatever that means.

The original 1991 movie starred Phoebe Cates as a young woman who battles with her controlling mother and womanizing husband, and finds comfort and confusion with the appearance of her childhood imaginary friend. The original film was bashed by critics, not particularly well liked by moviegoers, didn’t make much money at the box office ($13.8 million total), but has somehow developed a small but vocal cult following on home video.

I’m not sure why Universal is remaking the film. Maybe some child of the 1980’s executive was watching the original filmon cable television, noticed that the movie centered on a British comedian (Rik Mayall) with the same zany style of comedy that Brand sometimes employs. Universal appears to be in the Russell Brand business, producing the comedian’s US screen debut Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the upcoming spin-off Get Him to the Greek, and now this crazy remake. I’m a big supporter of Brand, but I’d rather see him in some more original concepts.

Discuss: Do you want to see a Drop Dead Fred Remake starring Russell Brand?

  • I want to see Russell Brand dropped into a volcano.
  • The only way to get rid of him is, Removal of the Head.
  • me too.
  • agreed
that would be the most entertaining thing that man could ever do.
  • I think Russell Brand is pretty funny myself. However, I have never seen nor heard of Drop Dead Fred so I am up in the air on this one.
  • musicsoup
i love drop dead fred. i haven't seen it in maybe 4 years, but growing up, it was a film i liked to watch at least once a year. yeah, i know how that sounds. i don't care. i could totally see brand doing this. we always bitch about hollywood remaking movies that don't need to be remade... well this isn't one of those movies. remake it. make it better - and whoever the girl is better be as cute as cates was. mmm... phoebe cates.
  • needer
I also loved Drop Dead Fred as a kid and thought it was pretty funny back then. And although I don't like Russell Brand that much I think he could take this idea and run with it. Its kind of a funny concept because you got to think that a lot of kids had imaginary friends and you could only imagine what it would be like as an adult going crazy and seeing them again. It doesn't have to be the same movie but the idea is still great to remake.
  • charlie
the mager bitch scgoste my head
  • I have to agree with Peter, I'd rather see him do something else besides something that is proven to fail miserably. The movie isn't that good, I know of only one person who watched it and liked it.
  • Mick
You obviously don't know anyone with as sense of humor then!
  • CamelSpit
I'd rather watch Brand throw an ATM through a bank window. Anything original would be nice. But if you haven't seen Drop Dead Fred, I highly recommend you find it and watch. Then come back and shrug with the rest of us in saying "eh, could be worse." I'll see this only because I liked the OG. Not cause I like RB.
  • Chromey
In a time of bad ideas this is one of the worst. Just call it something else at least.
  • Sev
Yah i agree...i mean, we would all complain and say, "This reminds me of another movie....i just not quite sure what it is though..." But at least a different name proves some original thinking.

Thanks man, I've trying to find this movie ever since I watched it back in 92, 93 (I was 10 back then). I remember I loved the movie, want to see it again but cant remmember what it was. Couples years back I settled for Beatlejuice, I thought that was it, but somehow it's still felt that something was missing. Someone ought to compare Beatlejuice with this one, tehy are quite similar and yeat totally different. And OMG finally, thank GOD I found you "Drop dead fred". This will go into my top ten along with "Stand by Me". Yay. By the way I'm a guy, I think most guys would love to be Fred.
  • hit
good luck finding it on DVD...
  • ddx
    already rapidsha~ing
  • FanofOriginalDDF
    Its on amazon for £3.97.....?
  • Jack
Horrible idea, I loved this film as a child and despise Russell Brand
  • Dog Poo
I can see this working just about as much as the original, which I loved as a kid.
    Just dont remake Clifford.
  • You mean Clifford the big red dog?

If yes, that film could only work if it's done the way Where The Wild Things Are has been treated for film.
  • No, just no.
  • this russell brand guy. i don't wanna see him in my movies.
  • dannyboy
    FOR GOD SAKE MORE REMAKE
  • I think this movie must be seen. I saw another review and it was good presented.
  • gerald
    Is nothing sacred!?!
  • fex
And they decide to postpone Bioshock? Is the world going to shit or what? Russel is a twat.
  • Infrafan
No. Rik Mayall was great in that role and there's no need to remake it. Also has several great shows under his belt like The Young Ones and Bottom. Leave it.
  • swiddy
i remember sitting in a wet seat soaked in soda watching this movie when i was 10. that was the best part about it.
  • Nicole McCall
I've always absolutely loved this film. Like, obsessed sort of love. Can still quote most of it. I really like Russell Brand, but this would have to be AMAZING for me to not be upset over people messing with it.
  • edccannotlogin
I'd like russell to remake the vietnam helicopter crash scene from the twilight zone.
  • Lee
Brand hasn't a sniff of talent compared to wrick...leave it alone let him do scary movie 45 or summat.

did i say Brand is a cant, anyone who has bought my bookywook needs a labatomy - this should be passed in law
  • Sev
Who's this even aimed at? 20-30 somethings who watched it as a kids. Or are they hopeing that we all have kids now, and dont know Russel Brand and will take our kids to go see it?
Or (probably) are these people just really, truly out of ideas. So they spend their days flipping through their film libraries and jokingly casting current actors into roles until they get something they like and then call up stairs frantically huffing, "We got an idea!!! Russel Brand in...Drop Dead Fred!"
  • AH hahahaha....I pray we are at the base of a renaissance, where all ideas have been used to the point of remake, upon remake, until the point they're remaking mediocrity. Perhaps then can we start anew. Perhaps....
  • Ri k Mayall
    Dear Russell Brand,
Drop Dead Fred did wonders for my career, and will eventually make you a household name.
    Sincerely,
    Rik Mayall
  • Why? Why? WHY? Yet ANOTHER remake. this is like, the 230th remake I've read about on Slash this year alone.
  • Dropped Alive
Russell Brand just twittered that this was utter nonsense and he is not doing it. <3
  • Hollie
Russell Brand is amazing! I saw him live, he is incredible.
Ive never seen Drop Dead Fred, but i would like to see Russell Brand in it. :)
  • Drop Dead Fred was on just about every critics top ten worst of the year in 1991. It was considered a bad Beetlejuice ripoff. Hollywood is making a calculated gamble that Brand will be a mainstream draw. I think there wrong!

    chuck
  • Fuck no. What the hell? Can we get some original movies for a change?
  • I like Russell Brand, but I feel as though his humour works the best when he doesn't have to censor himself. No doubt this will be a family film (although the original did have that whole "cobwebs" thing in it) so I don't have terribly high hopes.
  • adam
Wow, what a bunch of a terrible whiners.

Drop Dead Fred is hilarious, assuming you don't have a stick up your ass.

    Russell Brand... same thing.
  • toho
FUCK. NO. The original is great, it may not rate with the Pantheon of 80's classics in its' class, but that's because John Hughes ruled that genre and era, and all who followed were in his shadow. Drop Dead Fred should not be remade, but since so many people probably have not heard of it, or The Young Ones, put that moron Brand in it. Just call it something else please.
  • Brittany
Russell Brand is great and all but Drop Dead Fred is one of those movies that just can't be remade without ruining the film. Rik Mayall is the only one I could ever see in this role.
  • This is the perfect example of Hollywood running out of creative ideas.

I bet someone said, "Hey we should make this movie about a girl and her imaginary friend."

Then someone else said, "Well, that movie already existed. It was called, 'Drop Dead Fred'".

"Well then we could remake it!" Replied the first.

    This will never happen.
  • Dullard
This will be a good way to kill Brand's career once and for all. I fully support this movie.
  • Emalay
I grew up watching this movie. I still have in on VHS and my cousins have it on DVD. My cousins and I still quote it every time we get together, and to watch it with us is sort of a right of passage into my family. I absolutely despise Russell Brand. He would ruin one of my favorite childhood memories. I am all for a remake, I know nothing can ever top the original, just leave Russell Brand out of it.... please...
  • amy
not crazy about it, but i guess if anyone is going to be 'Fred', then Russell Brand is that person...
  • haha that movie was creepy back in the day. should be a fun remake.
  • kate
i used to watch drop dead fred probably once a week. on long car rides, i would quote it word for word to piss off my brother... i was like six. it is a movie i lend to my friends all the time, and as a result of its popularity, i often find myself re-buying it because some people just can't give it back. i LOVE it. I could also see Brand in this role, he's pretty funny. I'm interested to see how it will come out.
  • Goobity
Drop Dead [ insert name of Universal Studios dip-shit who felt this was a good idea, instead of actually justifying their existence and using their position as it was intended - to develop a project that was fresh and inventive and worth paying to see. Instead of rehashing more of the same moronic shit that not only insults movie-goers, but further destroys all that is good in the industry].
