Somebody else to also pick up a copy of the latest Empire magazine has scanned perhaps the most interesting image from the entire publication and, via the magic of photoshop, given us an absolutely incredible look into not the set, but the actual world of James Cameron’s Avatar.

As well as showing you the image, I’ll also have to explain to you just how come we’re getting to see it.

So, before I post the picture, some context. All officially released Avatar images have so far been on-set snaps, showing James Cameron with cameras, computer gear and lots and lots of green. There’s one picture in Empire, though, that shows a monitor, and on that monitor’s screen, a real-time CG rendering of a shot. This is how Cameron is working - he’s having on-the-fly versions of imagery created so that he can look at his screen and get a very strong idea of what his composition will look like in the completed movie.

With a little perspective alteration, the screen image has been reformatted to appear front-on, as Cameron would see it on his monitor. Here it is:

To my eye, the stylings are similar to Cameron’s own Aliens. I guess that’s no real surprise, and its definitely not a bad thing. I could speculate as to exactly what we are seeing here, but I think you’d probably do a better job with those guesses yourself and I look forward to reading your comments.

Marketsaw posted the image (it was scanned by one of their readers) along with some of the remaining on-set ones. As I did in my recent Lovely Bones post, Marketsaw are encouraging you to pick up a copy of the magazine for yourself by not including every image, nor every piece of information. The interview with Cameron inside the magazine is a good one, and well worth any fan’s time.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like an Avatar trailer is going to premiere any time soon, with the rumours of its appearance before Wolverine now being denied. Each of these new reveals could be tiding me over, but instead they’re just making me more hungry.

    In Cameron we trust.
  • agreed

    triple super agree

Cameron is "King of the World!" :)
  • I think that James Cameron is going to jail after Avatar comes out, because peoples heads are going to explode all over the theater, and if that doesn't happen to them, then they will go insane from seeing something as mind-fucking as Avatar. December 18th, here I come.
  • James Cameron you tease :(
  • I know they're all images of Cameron with only slight hints of what we're actually looking at....this guy needs to cut this out and release a still of the actors in the human environment..I'm tired of looking at him behind the camera to be honest...yes you're working on a movie, I'm proud for you too James...lol
  • I know. It just kills me because I know there's amazing shit on the other side of those pictures. He won't let me have that carrot!
  • this film is almost unknown to the average moviegoer along with the fact it's 3D..I think MarketSaw is Avatar's only/biggest advertisement .....I would have expected the same sort of marketing campaign that we saw with Terminator Salvation...

with all the money Fox has sunk into Avatar they should be more proud to show it off...Cameron really needs to think of his fans before releasing these behind the scenes images....I mean I could careless what kind of camera he's using/holding... I want to see the military or some aliens...even some concept images would be something....

Did you not read JJ Abrams' article about spoilers?

Some things we should be allowed to wait for...stop with the leaks, already.
  • No I didn't read it, because JJ Abrams sucks.
  • I'm assuming the thing on the left is a vehicle of some sort with it's canopy open. So I'm guessing it's in a hangar of some sort. I think.
  • everything behind the actor is CGI.. if you notice at MarketSaw, you can plainly see the in camera green screen and next to it is the CGI environment integrated with the shooting cameras...it's almost like how a video game engine works
  • Quite.

I've been analyzing the picture for a bit now, and I can make out the faint image of a man on the left side of the picture, walking towards camera with something in his hands

I don't think there'll be much analyzing when there isn't much to analyze.
  • Its looks to me that it is a hanger bay. With a guard making his rounds. We see two things there a small one or two person ship with the top open. Then a bigger ship or the same type of ship with the top closed. I can tell that the first ship is a non space craft so more like a air plane and the other maybe a space ship. Also he could be looking from the people or things that were from that ship. Most likely stowaways.
  • Sounds likely-ish.
  • i have also been analyzing the photo, and have come to the conclusion that cameron has gained some weight
  • Jeff L.
I noticed that too. I'm sure the film will be great, regardless.
  • I'm willing to believe that we'll be seeing an Avatar trailer with Ice Age 3, which is Fox's first digital 3-D release.
  • What's the release date on that? What's the release date for Avatar?
  • Ice Age 3 comes out 4th of July weekend, and Avatar comes out December 19. I'm positive the Avatar trailer will not be attached to a movie that is not being exhibited in 3-D, and with Ice Age 3 and Avatar sharing a distributor (Fox), this is the surest bet.
  • I think you are most probably right.
  • Ah yes, that incredibly blurry monitor shows us everything we need to know! Thanks Brendon, thanks to your assessment of one frame out of the entire film, I know this is simply a copy off of Aliens!
  • There is no color to that image either so who knows what it will look like.. if its even a slight bit more colorful, that will completely change the feel of the entire film. The only reason it looks like aliens is because its dark dreary and there is technology... haha

Just wait.. with that kinda budget and Cameron rockin it.. we should be fine.
  • Of course! Thanks to Brendon's analysis of one blurry frame from what we can only assume to be a two hour film, everyone here can write off Avatar as a mere Aliens rip off.

    Thanks, Brendon. You're the man!
  • That's not what I did at all!
  • He didn't mean it that way. Did you read the rest of his post?
  • Weyland_Yutani
    it's obviously a person looting a post-apocalyptic, alien Wal-Mart.
  • It's been a while since I was actually forced to see a movie on opening day. I am not concerned.
  • KATO DIAZ
IM EXCITED ABOUT THIS MOVIE! I KNOW ITS GOING TO TAKE US SOMEWHERE OUR MINDS HAVE NEVER BEEN BEFORE! BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS THE PICTURE OF? WHAT AM I LOOKING AT?
  • How incredible is that? Real-time CGI! Thats insane! The way technology has improved over my (relatively short) lifetime never fails to amaze me.
  • NandosFan
The less we see the better its going to be !
  • This is still not an actual screenshot of the film.
The least they can do is give us a real screenshot of a finished shot
  • Cat
It's interesting looking to say the least.
  • <<In Cameron we trust. >>

I always wondered - based on what people have this conclusion?

Because his last movie was in 1997, and it was Titanic! And one before - True Lies from '94.
So how exactly hordes of people think he is god of sci-fi, all of a sudden?
  • limitless
    You're an idiot. Cameron rules
  • All of a sudden? He's proved himself to be amazing for the genre plenty of times. He's kept busy filming and producing between True Lies and Titanic.
  • Ummm Aliens and Terminator 1 & 2....the bibles of action science fiction....I do have issues with him not making a feature film in 12 years as well...although that won't hinder the coolness factor it may effect the performances... since he can't direct actors at all and has said so in the past......let's just hope the casting pays off...the man is an amazing artist, camera man, editor and production designer...giving actors direction is another thing

  • Dr. Panzer Kunst
Judging from that pic, it's obvious that Avatar is just a commercial front, and Cameron is actually making BATTLE ANGEL ALITA after all... yay!!!
  • Well at least its better than nothing...
  • Karl
My guess is that the vehicle is a "Samson" fro Camerons scriptment, a flying dropship for soldiers. Agree that the tech looks like Aliens and I´l liking it very much. I like that Cameron is using real sets and real vehicles for close ups. Go to market saw to see the whole scan and look at the left monitor. You can clearly see that it´s the same image without the cgi backgrounds but still with the dropship.

Having seen Watchmen (twice), this is my most anticipated film of 2009 by far. James Cameron has never failed us before, and when he says he's going to deliver a revolution, you'd better believe he will!

I wonder just how Fox is going to market this movie. They could even make ads that show us absolutely nothing from the film to increase the anticipation, and greatly increase the curiosity factor, making people ask "just what the hell is this?"
  • The picture doesn't show much but whatever that is, it looks like some sort of machinery (possibly a space ship of sorts?).

Man I really want to get a look at the trailer/teaser for this film. I'm getting a bit tired of waiting but my enthusiasm for the film remains nonetheless.
  • im excited! i want to see what others do with this new technology as well tho
  • shadow
My number one concern, the ships and sets looking to neon-futuristic, has been dismissed by this photo. I look forward to this alot more now :)
  • I was really hoping we would get something a little better than those images. Oh well, anything's better than nothing.
  • lux
I have been analyzing the picture for a while and I've came with the conclusion that the image has a blue tone.
  • ratava
This movie is becoming a joke.
Cameron is not going to complete it for the release date, and when he FINALLY will, all the so higly-praised-state-of-the-art-cgi will be already outdated.
