machete

Earlier today it was confirmed that Robert Rodriguez would be developing/directing a reboot of Predator titled Predators. We speculated that Rodriguez’s next film would be the futuristic action thriller Nerveracker which has an announced 2010 release date, but Variety reports that Rodriguez will be returning to the Grindhouse before he goes to the future.

That’s right, Rodriguez will finally be directing a feature length version of Machete, based on the mock trailer that was attached to Grindhouse. And by directing, I mean co-directing. Rodriguez wrote the script and will direct the movie with his longtime editor Ethan Maniquis.

Danny Trejo will reprise the title role, which he played in the original faux trailer. Rodriguez penned the script a while back and has been waiting for an opportunity to make the movie. The film is being financed and produced by Overnight Productions, and Rodriguez is hoping to begin production in Austin in June. It isn’t clear if the movie will be released direct-to-video or have a small theatrical release.

Machete should end up being one of those fast, fun movies he can crank out quickly. Now if only Edgar Wright would do DON'T.
  • Saw the trailer, and laughed at it. Sounds like a very low budget film maybe worth a rental.
  • Merciful_budah
I think that's sort of the point. The trailer was made to be perceived as a low budget 70's B movie (Rodriguez like always went waaaaay over the top and made something that could never have been logistically made in the 70's).

I hope he has some fun with it.

    About darn time.
  • cambion
Yes! Unlike some other directors I could name, Rodriguez knows how to make a simple, fun movie without turning it into a Hollywood crapfest. I can't wait to see this.

I just wish Sin City 2 would hurry up and get the green light. It's been like five years, for Christ's sake.
  • machete, sin city 2, predators... after a few years w/o a release I feel like Rodriguez is going to unload to movie fans in nice little run, one right after the other...
  • Patrick
    Fucking fuck yes!
  • gah
I'm way more excited for Neveracker his Blade Runner inspired sci fi film. Im sick of all this nostalgic b-movie crap he and Tarantino have been putting out. yeah we get it, you guys like 70s exploitation cinema. move on please.
  • Hahaha, yeah. I have to agree. I mean both of them have created excellent films thus far, some of my favorites, but it's time they did something new. And sci-fi Rodriguez style is something I'm definitely looking forward to. Still, I'll probably enjoy this too.

Cool, hip, renegade directors should make 70's exploitation films. We get it, Mr. Rodriguez/Tarantino.

    Thanks, twitter.
  • The_Kid
    I'm seeing it.

Can it be, is it true? Say it ain't so! YES! FINALLY! But I hope it won't be one of those films where the trailer was better than the actual product.

Rodriguez is due for another cool movie. His was the better of the grindhouse pair, yet still both seem to already have been forgotten. Machete will be an awesome release, and I cannot wait to see it(I hope in theatres)
  • Juiceless
    Flourish?
  • I've been waiting for Machete for awhile now, I'm thinking my interest level is about to go away. This better get made in the next year if anything or I'm not going to look forward to it again.
  • Juiceless
Gotcha. Yeah, I agree, a Danny Trejo with a walker and a machete? No thanks.

Is it just me, or is has Robert Rodriguez announced he's going to be starting about 50 projects in the last few months?
  • I agree with you, and yeah, you got me. Anyway, I was really really interested in this at first, well at first it was just a fake trailer that I really enjoyed. And then Rodriguez started saying he was going to turn it into a movie, a movie that was 40% finished already. So I was happy about that but then again, Rodriguez always announces things and they never happen, something he's been doing alot of lately. Like I said, if this movie doesn't come out in the next year, I'm not going to worry about it and look forward to it anymore.
  • Excellent
  • Machete will be awesome, but am i the only one that would rather see "Thanksgiving" from Grindhouse?
  • TheMarquis
I'd love to see a Thankgiving/Machete double bill. Hopefully it'll be better than the last one--- i'm looking at you, Death Proof.
  • I was actually hoping this movie got made. The trailer is awesome!
  • MCA
Should hopefully be the kind of fun that Grindhouse sort of wasn't but should have been.
  • Rodriguez is my new master...
  • roriguez is hacksauce. he's a shadow to tarantino, true giant.
  • Is Rodriguez giving himself enough time to breathe?! Between Predators, Red Sonja, Neveracker, Sin City 2+3 (if they ever come at all) and Machete, when is this guy going to take some time for himself?

That said, I was very much hoping that Machete would get an expansion and I am very much looking forward to this.
  • I can't see this being anything more worthy than a direct-to-DVD release. I'd hate to see another box office bomb next to Roberts name. There was the same kind of hype around the original Grindhouse but no bastard showed up to see that.
