wolverine

After the workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine showed up online, Fox head Tom Rothman told Entertainment Weekly that “the version that went out” was “about 10 minutes shorter” and “doesn’t have key scenes” that would be included in the final theatrical cut of the film. Earlier this week people online noticed that both the leaked “unfinished” workprint and the final cut have the same running time of 107 minutes. How could this be? Did Rothman lie? Or does the theatrical cut actually feature ten minutes of “key scenes” not in the early cut? The answer after the jump.

AICN has seen the theatrical cut and reveals: “The workprint version IS in fact identical to the release print, sans effect and some audio work.” I understand that Fox was just trying to keep people from watching the pirated version of the movie, but did they really need to lie? And apparently the unfinished special effects don’t even look so great in their finished form Veritas says that “the finished effects are lackluster, to say the least - some really bad CGI work made me groan numerous times.”

I think the best defense against piracy is not extra security or guards with night vision goggles, but actually creating a quality product. I don’t condone stealing movies, and I have not, and will not, download the Wolverine work print. I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t speak about the quality of the film myself. If someone handed me a copy of Pixar’s Up on DVD right now, I wouldn’t/couldn’t watch it. If Wolverine was a good movie, people would want to pay money to see it on the big screen. But to me, Rothman’s lies demonstrate the company’s lack of confidence in both the material and their audience.

    Told ya so....

well I have seen the workprint and it's crap so I'm not even going to bother netflixing the DVD at this point.

Or maybe, in order to combat piracy, websites like this shouldn't announce over and over "Hey! You can download Wolverine today! Didja know that yet?!"
  • Jordan
    news is news.
  • andy
    anonymous loser says what?
  • anonymous
    what?
  • yea, because no one knew otherwise. it took /film and other movie sites to tell us about it....
  • fonz
actually those that are big into seeing movies that are still in theaters (and those yet to be released) knew about the leaked workprint before it was reported on slashfilm. it doesnt take a genius to find pirated materials on line. youre just being obtuse
  • Peter
This is the internet...I don't know where you think you are?
When a major Hollywood film gets leaked, you think people are going to say "shh, dont tell so nobody watches", that shit spreads like wildfire and if you can't beat em, join em.
  • Goobity
Someone at FOX distorted the truth?
    Say it ain't so! ;)
  • It can't be true. Fox is a respected an honest company.
  • Cat
I'll still see it for the transformers trailer before hand.
  • Dvq
pass, screw Fox and their crappy movies.
  • Oh dear. Well I never saw the leaked movie, so I'm not sweating it. I'm still seeing this when it comes out.
  • waste of money, trust
  • I've seen it and I do agree with you but I have a few friends that also watched it and liked it alot. they said they can't wait to see the finished product. So I guess to some it wouldn't be a total waste of money.
  • LOL. Apparently it makes people angry that you want to see what they consider a bellow average movie? Weird. Anyway, I'm seeing this too. People should understand, it's f***ing Gambit. On screen. The BIG screen. GAMBIT. That's why I'm seeing it. ;) I think I'll go to my theater and replace the 'X-Men: Origins' poster, with a homemade 'Gambit: The Movie' poster.
  • I'm going to go see it too, even though I have absolutely NO expectations for it.
I just feel I have to.
Plus I need something to do next Friday, and it's only $4.50 at the theater if I go early.
Not too much money wasted for the sake of killing a few hours, I'd say.
Plus, I have a tendency to end up not hating movies other people hate. But I DID have X3 so who knows...

    elaborate
  • on what? He's saying Peter has seen it.
  • I think Peter is full of rainbows and popcorn.
  • Great argument. Seems like you put a lot of thought into it.
  • I think to combat piracy, we should hire more NAVY snipers.

Rothman has proven to be THE douchebag in Hollywood these days. This just adds to his repertoire.
  • INS
crappy action movie for fans of the character

Im sure the storyline will blow, just hoping they at least have some decent fighting scenes between all the damn mutants they keep advertising

    andy can't read?

this movie is a piece of shit, anyone who waits to see it in theaters to find out themselves are only going to waste their money and help the studios create more bullshit like this. i'm glad this leaked and fucked up their profits. the only point of making such garbage is to make money, nobody involved in this project gives a fuck about creating a good film, or has any talent worth paying attention to.
its a big budget , cgi infested, shitty scripted spinoff of a mediocre series. they dont deserve to profit on this.
  • Sadly, even if this takes a huge drop in profit they'll still make more.
  • You honestly thought they were making a Wolverine movie for anything more than 'to make money'? What the hell were people expecting from this film?
  • sigh. . .

I'll reserve judgement until I actually see the film, but I don't have high hopes after all this internet talk. How hard could it be to make a decent Wolverine/Weapon X film? I hope Marvel get the rights back soon. . .
  • Lol, I knew it!! The finshed product is just as terrible as that workprint... I would even go as far to say that the workprint might be more enjoyable with the ridiculous unfinished special effects
  • starscream9289
What if someone were to send you a fully completed cut of Toy Story 3 Peter?

Would you be able to resist?
  • What a shocker... Fox lies? Wolverine didn't have some last minute amazing home makeover to make it into something able to pass as something watchable? I'm really quite surprised... and by surprised, I mean the COMPLETE opposite. I had to make myself watch the workprint, and honestly, it was a complete waste of time and energy to try and understand the garbled hunk of trash story/concept that this was. Pathetic all around.
  • jrice73
Typical... Honestly, I haven't downloaded the bootleg and I don't intend to see it in theatres.
  • The movie is terrible either way.
  • The movie's not any worse than any of the Wolverine solo comics. I love Wolverine, but people gotta realize, he's a cheesy fuckin character. And his backstory has always been changed around and has become so convoluted over the years that it's ridiculous. I thought the movie was alright, it accurately represented the cheesiness of the character and had some fun action scenes. Wolverine's a popcorn movie, and if you were expecting a deep emotional drama, you're a retard.
  • scott
Am I the only one that liked it?
  • No, I liked it as well. It wasn't anything amazing by any means, but I got what I expected out of it, a fun popcorn movie.
  • andy
except nothing that happens in the movie is particularly awesome or amazing. Maybe the deadpool katana vs gun fight but otehr than that I was overall bored watching teh flick.
  • I think that's always the hardest part of making a comic book movie; translating the humor and flow of dialogue. If you give it the same feel as the comics, it looks too cheesy (that's just how it is on film, you can't do the same stuff), but if you change it too much then you run the risk of pissing off fans.
  • Sev
I have to disagree. I think Ironman did an excellent job of nailing the humor and flow of dialogue and still stayed very true to the source material and the character. I like Huge Jackman's Wolverine, but you can just tell that no one cares about the material or the soul of the character over at Fox.
  • Oh yea, I'm not saying it CAN'T be done. I just mean it's very difficult. Iron Man totally accomplished it. I agree with you there.
  • musicsoup
$45mil opening weekend. calling it now. could have been $80mil without the leak.

star trek's opening to $90mil+ at least. though i'm hoping the number is closer to $115mil.

    transformers opening to $100mil.

    calling it now.
  • RotF - close to $200 mil
Terminator Salvation - close to $200 mil
Star Trek maybe does $115 opening weekend
    Wolverine - maybe $60-$70 mil
  • I just hope they don't blame the revenues from the film on the workprint release. If the film was bad by word of mouth, people aren't going to go see it. When Dark Knight was leaked after the film was releaased, people that weren't going to pay to see it liked it so much, they went to the theaters so they can watch it on the big screen. Plus, the word of mouth was very good. If people give it bad reviews based on the near-finished workprint, then the studio really shouldn't blame piracy but instead make a better film.
  • Ineluctable Ian
This kind of piracy is only bad if it creates negative buzz about the quality of the product. Obviously, this piracy is bad. I saw the first half of the film, couldn't sit through any more. If you still insist on seeing the movie, here's a fun drinking game you can play: Everytime a character in the movie looks up at the sky and screams "NNNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!" take a drink. (It doesn't count if people in the audience realizing this is The Phantom Menace of X-Men prequals do it.)
  • dlb
I smell the end of Rothman's reign of terror
  • Is it worse then X3? The only bad thing is there goes my hope for a deadpool film.
  • Have you seen the Deadpool from Origins?

I don't mind that they strayed off the characters look, what bothers me is the lack of creativity that went into creating the "Weapon XI/Deadpool" from the film. Its pathetically dull and uninspired and a complete wreck aesthetically.
