Tony Scott and Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is in talks to star in Tony Scott’s action drama Unstoppable. Washington would play an experienced engineer who finds himself in a race against time, with a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals. The role of the conductor who helps Washington’s character, has not yet been cast.  The duo chase the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that could decimate a town.

Screenwriter Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Deception, Race to Witch Mountain) based the script loosely inspired by true events. The project has gone under two previous titles: Runaway Train and 8888, named after the CSX locomotive model number, often referred to as “Crazy Eights” because of two separate incidents in Ohio, one a derailment, the other a runaway train the film is loosely based on.

A runaway freight train traveled 70 miles with no one at the controls for nearly two hours before rail workers were able to slow it down by latching a second engine to the end of the train and applying the brakes. While two of the train’s tank cars contained thousands of gallons of the hazardous material molten phenol acid, the runaway train itself was considered more of a threat than the chemicals on board.

This would be Washington’s fifth film with Scott, following Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Deja Vu and the remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. 20th Century Fox hopes to begin production this fall.

  • I've actually never heard of this project but it does sound good. It sounds alot like some of the other roles Washington has been doing as of late. I wonder who will play the conductor?
  • ReallY? I already saw this when it was starring Rob Lowe in a made-for-TV movie called "Atomic Train"
  • Yeah I've never heard of Atomic Train with Rob Lowe. It could be because most made for TV movies generally suck, especially if they have Rob Lowe in them. For example, Atomic Train and The Stand. Actually the stand wasn't that bad, not as bad as Atomic Train sounds.

One reason why this movie will be alot better than the thing you're talking about is that this isn't made for TV and it has Denzel in it.

  • 3rd reason - Tony Scott

I used to be able to watch movies with train-drama in them, no trouble, until I actually became an engineer in the business myself.
Only decades ago or in the most backwater nations would/will a train run without someone at the controls for 'hours'. Most I can hope for when I drive the things is seven seconds, and we check that dead mans grip every start-up and more. Nowadays I can't imagine any modern country letting a traincar/train/locomotive roll off production without several backup mechanics to get the stuff to brake like hell in any situation a step from shiny candy normality.

That movie better be set in the seventies or me and likely tons of others will call bullcrap.
  • Holy shit! They should shut down production on this movie!

I'm only kidding obviously, I don't think realism is too major a concern for this movie.

Hate to break this to you, Gen., but there really was a runaway train in northwest Ohio in 2001 that ran for almost 70 miles before another crew latched onto its tail end, then braked to slow it down enough to get through some sharp curves and allow a state trooper to climb aboard at a crossing and kill the throttle. I know because I was out reporting in the field when it happened. (I wonder if Tony Scott needs somebody to play a newspaper reporter chasing this thing.) The train was a yard job switching without air and the engineer made a mistake with the throttle before stepping off to line a switch for himself after having applied the independent brake. Because the independent was applied, the dead-man feature didn't activate. Engine 8888 and its 42 (or so) cars got away before the engineer could climb back on board and slowly gained speed as its power overwhelmed the brakes.____You can look it up.__

Yeah, that would about do it. Switching without air is not exactly regulation where I live and work. That bit with the independent negating the dead-man I've heard of on occasion, though the machines I work with need a switch thrown to allow throttle when the brakes are applied.

I didn't mean to sound like I was disputing the event, though. A 'runaway freight train' in my mind means traffic, with driver, automatic train control and the works(pre-tested brakes, going with air and all), didn't know it was a switching set. Kind of assumed away the possibility of it being a train in the way of a machine and a bunch of train cars.

    Thanks for the details (=

I love Denzel, but do you guys feel like he plays the same character in most movies. Mostly cop, hero type. gangster hero. haha. He is a very talented actor, but that's my only complaint. Kind of like Bruce Willis. Bruce Willis seems to play very similar character types. But then again, that's a lot of actors in the industry. I feel that a lot with some comedian actors too. But I guess that's just because that's what works for them. Eh.... i don't know where i was going with that...
  • Tony Scott looks a bit like Michael Caine in this Pic
  • Why would they do another train movie right after Pelham 123? Denzel is no Walter Mathau, after all.
  • You could also American Gangster to the list since that was his brother, Ridley. Denzel and Russel Crowe really like the Scott brothers (and vice versa) apparently.
  • Denzel plays the same character in every movie
  • wmwm
What happen to Tony's remake of 'the warriors' ?
  • C'on
Why did he have to get paired up with this guy? Arnie got Cameron, DeNiro got Scorsese....... Branch out Denzel---come on!
  • Tony Scott and Denzel are so boys.
  • this does so like everything else he has been doing but ill admit that i will watch it anyway lol
  • I kinda know what you're saying. He always just seems to be himself. It would be nice to see him tackle a character role where he has to change many of his mannerisms and even presentation. I guess one has to wait for these kinds of roles to come along and they just 'aint happening for him.
  • I'm going to rent Money Train starring Woody and Wesley. 90s action junk.
  • tmg
    sounds shit.

This is NOT a remake of another movie! My GGG-Grandparents were some of the original settlers in this area. The train derailment actually happend & there wasn't a stream in the area that wasn't contaminated, especially a well known native trout stream. A friend had dead fish, birds, frogs, & other wildlife that relied on that stream for survival, on her farm. And it took weeks to clean up because of the isolated, mountainous area. This was a True Event, now how true the movie stays is another story. qltmakr
