We’ve been hearing a lot about X-Men: First Class lately. Last week we learned that the film was not actually a spin-off, but a prequel which features “young Scott, young Jean, young Beast” attending the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. But more telling is the answer she gave SciFi Wire when they asked Producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the franchise potential of the series.

“I like kids. I did produce Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire. I do like those kind of teenage movies; I really do. Part of it takes me to my roots. It’s action. There seems, to me, to be more humor, or more potential for humor. I really like that idea. The relationship … I don’t want to get into what the script is about, but it provides a bit of a lighter touch to the franchise.”

Sounds to me like X-Men: First Class is being set-up to be a PG-rated kids superhero film ala Fantastic Four.

Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo's Fire aren't exactly PG or kids flicks. I think if it was done in the same way as those it would be interesting. But if it was strictly stuff like Sky High and FF then yeah that would suck.
  • Bob
I enjoyed Sky High. But I wouldn't want X-Men: First Class to be like it.
  • ruy
Fox, please stop to ruin the X franchise!
  • Smash
I'm sorry but X-Men 3 has already happened.

This sounds like a perfect vehicle to get other viewers interested in an X-Men film. Not every superhero movie needs to be dark and brooding.
  • Cat
Those movies mentioned definitely weren't for kids. Fox strikes again!
  • Infrafan
Please don't say "like Fantastic Four". God that was mishandled for a couple of decades and we ended up with. ..well, we all know. Hell, I liked the version that was never released better. It was more faithful. Yeah, Fox needs to loose all their options with comics, and books, and good Fox movies. Actually, FOX needs a remake itself.
  • I think the PG thing may be a bit of an assumption. But that doesnt mean this is a good idea. For one thing, I dont know what they are going to do about Iceman already being a youngling in the first films. And are they really willing to make a movie without Wolverine? I bet they would try and squeeze him in somehow.
  • Um... isn't Beast quite a bit older than Storm and Jean and Scott? I swear I thought he had like 20 years on them and was only like 10 years younger than the professor. That rumor just doesn't make sense to me
  • No, he's not. His appearance in The Last Stand may have suggested otherwise but the original run of the comic (1963) and the First Class books (which are basically just "other stories" from the original run with a different paint job) had him as a teenager recruited by Xavier.
  • Ben
I dont know if she meant PG by that article Peter. But i have to say if The Incredibles has shown us anything that a light hearted PG super hero movie can work. I just don't have high hopes from FOX that is.
  • COME WITH IT NOW
    Sounds super lame

This franchise died when Ratner took the wheel....
  • Goobity
Yes, but things can change. The Batman franchise 'died' when Shumacher took the reins, I seem to recall...
  • Yeah but Fox isn't giving us time to forget all the crap that was the latest X-men films. I agree things can change, but only if Marvel gets their characters back and cuts Fox out of everything.
  • Fuck it, get John Hughes on it.
  • filmkid
FOX is rubbish DBE was made for kids and had a PG rating also it was like FF and look what happen it flopped. so they want to make X-Men: First Class for kids too most likely it will flop aswell. X-Men died at X-Men 3 FOX should just give up and stop destroying every comic book, anime and video games movies for god sake.
  • Mayroth
ugh. This is why those stupid Marvel animated movies are made.
  • greycolumbus
Yes, because kids will be franchise-aware enough to identify and care about an X-Men prequel.
  • rnl
    fuck fox.
  • ziggi
did anyone tell her about fantastic four and fantastic four 2 sucking very much?
  • Goobity
A long as Jean & Scott aren't played by Molly Ringwald and John Cryer...
  • Fine with me as long as they keep making more adult fare as well. And I think when he says kids he means teenagers.
  • Justin Craig
You're all lame!!! Nothing good can come from this Gossip Girl meets X-Men garbage. I know! While we're at it, why don't we make an Iron Man movie that's focused around Tony Stark's very first wet dream, or Catwoman Begins: Selena Kyle's First Period. This prequel is going to suck more than Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. They'll probably even throw in a mutant with amphibian like qualities who talks with a Jamaican accent and call him Jar Jar. His mutant power will be boggling the minds of film goers worldwide by completely ruining seemingly impenetrable franchises. God I hate Fox!
  • Sam
Yeah it doesn't look like we're ever going to get any chance of a good x-men film. I think Marvel are the only ones that would actually take it seriously. Iron Man was great and that's because they actually took time to do things right.
  • Ben Mortimer
Nothing would please me more than the halfway point between X-Men and a John Hughes movie. Let's be honest, fun as the existing franchise was (before The Rat fucked it up) it would have been mor ein keeping with the books if played as a well written teen movie witha twist.

At their heart the characters are regular kids, the powers are secondary, and if the film is written in that fashion, dealing with the day-to-day problems of being a teen in a minority group where you hate other members of that group it could be the most loyal X-Men movie yet. Just Keep Rat Boy and Rothman well away.
  • It's official, this movie's going to suck big time. Who wants to see teens with problems? not me, especially super powered teens. If anything they should just make the film but not aimed at a younger audience.
  • J Austin
What i want them to do is make an Uncanny X-Men (R) and choose one of the story line that worked so well , I mean 30+ years its art no need to change what was done right then. Go back to the first story and fallow that.
  • edog
Failtastic. Similar thinking birthed Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
