the fighter

The Fighter has been struggling to make it to the big screen for the last two years, and is finally back on track with David O Russell at the helm. Christian Bale is now signed to play Dicky Eklund, a real life boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after a run of drugs and crime. Dicky shepherded his half-brother “Irish” Micky Ward in a Rocky-like rise to world lightweight champion.  Ward fought throughout the mid-’80s and ’90s, but he’s best remembered for three battles with Arturo Gotti, two of which went down as the greatest in the history of the sport. Ward lost each one.

The project was originally set up under Darren Aronofsky, with Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon attached to play the leads. The project stalled after Damon moved on and the writers strike hit, even with Brad Pitt offering up his services. When I last interviewed Aronofsky, he made hopeful comments about the project. But I could tell that The Wrestler probably filled his sports film ambitions, and that the filmmaker was ready to move on to other things. Mark Wahlberg has continued to train for the role despite the countless setbacks, and is still expected to star as “Irish” Micky Ward. Last I heard, 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver has been brought on board to rewrite the script.

Russell might seem like an odd choice to direct a sports film, considering his backgrounds of indie comedies and dramas (Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, I Heart Huckabees). But some will note that his 1999 Gulf War film Three Kings is highly acclaimed for blending elements of action, drama and comedy. Paramount hopes to begin production in July, although the contracts are not yet signed.

To bad Aronofsky quit the project! What's he doing next?
  • gah
Hopefully his Noah's Arc film but something tells me that's gonna be hard to find financing for.
  • James
yeah a religious movie has trouble getting financing... something tells me DeMille would disagree.
  • Greg
    epic!
  • There is only one man in the entire world that would make me want to see a Noah's Arc movie. And his name is Darren Aronofsky.

One day all of his skills demonstrated will come together in a single film and his will rule its respective decade.

(I'd suppose I would watch Micheal Bay's Noah Arc too...)
  • Noah's Arc? Good lord.

    What's next, the Wholly Trinity?
  • Geet
Seriously, "Arc"?!?! And here I thought they were playing a joke...
  • Nick
I hope he does the other project that was announced besides Robocop and the Noah's Arc thing, Black Swan, about two rival ballerinas. I'm not really into ballet, but one of my favorite movies is The Red Shoes, and I'm sure a visual master like Aronofsky could produce some awe-inspiring images if he had dancers infront of his lense.
  • I like the ways things turned out on this, Two great choices

I highly expect Wahlberg to still be attached. HBO has a show called Pacquiao/Hatton 24/7. This past episode featured Bale and Wahlberg watching ringside at the Wildcard Gym in LA while Pacquiao trained with Freddie Roach.
  • RandomDude
    Ditto, I saw that too.
  • Sarcasm
Exactly what does this have to do with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh?
  • FutureKing
    Uh-oh, this could get nasty...

The Fighter, starring Screaming Asshole #1, directed by Screaming Asshole #2.
  • gah
Wahlberg is a bigger asshole. he had a penchant for beating up minorities and using racial/homophobic slurs back in the day. I dunno about you but that seems a little worse than yelling at a DP or Lily Tomlin.
  • You're forgetting his spat with SNL's Andy Samberg.
  • Troy
Don't count out Russell on the asshole meter. He pushed a script girl(!) to the ground on the set of Three Kings, resulting in him getting punched out by Clooney.

Actually, I guess that makes him an asshole and a pussy. Nevermind.
  • Nick
I'd bet that if O. Russell does end up directing, Wahlberg will be kept on, since they've done two movies together and seem to like working along one another.
  • A fan
Saw the Ward GATTI (with an 'A' not an 'O") series - one of the best trilogies ever. Best quote came from the third - Ward cracked a rib and Gatti had just broken his hand. The bell sounds, Gatti goes back to his corner and whispers to Buddy McGirt, his trainer, "I broke my hand, man." McGirt, "What?" "I broke my hand." McGirt looks at Gatti who is wincing and favoring his hand. "Well... what do you wanna do, baby?" Gatti looks up at McGirt, "I wanna keep fighting." McGirt smiles, "Okay, baby, then let's go to work. Here's what you gotta do..."
  • freemachine
Gatti had a "glass hand" and had God knows how many times he actually broke it.
  • edc
    ho ly shit.
    theys gonna kill eachother.
  • jason B
    holy unexpected-badass-team-up batman!
  • Yeah! bring it...perfect role for marky mark - oscar.... bale rules.
  • Christian Bale working on a film called The Fighter... the publicity takes care of itself!
  • gah
Um....weren't Bale and Wahlberg supposed to be starring in Bryan Singers Prisoner's together? Which one is coming first? Plus is it actually safe getting Bale, Russell and Wahlberg in a room together? im pretty sure the crew is at high risk.
  • So true...! LOL
The insurance alone to have the three of them in the same room together would make this project too expensive.
  • Without Darren this movie takes a step down but the actors should be able to save it. I am a boxing fan and liked watching Ward fight, so the story could be interesting.

    MAJOR ERROR!

Micky Ward DID NOT LOSE EACH FIGHT with Arturo Gatti. Ward beat Gatti in May of 2002, which was their first of three fights, but he did lose the last two.
  • I agree. Aronofsky is great and you get a big douce in David O. Russell. How can you really fight with Clooney? Also, I like the matchup of Bale and Wahlberg even though Bale would beat the shit out of a 5'7" Wahlberg.
  • yeah i guess he's 7 years older than Micky, and Wahlberg is 3 years older than Bale, so it's plausible and probably won't be a big deal

but still to me, wahlberg clearly looks like the older of the two.
  • I thought he was going to direct BFF next. WTF!
  • Marvin3O
Wasn´t Russell the one involved on another rant with Lily Tomlin on the set of Huckabees? wooo... I would not want to be on the set if Russell and Bale get into an argument!
  • Although I like Bale and Wahlberg, shoudn't the trainer be older than the fighter? Wahlberg seems kinda old for the part, or at least if Bale is going to play his older brother/trainer.

But I can't wait to see a movie about Irish Mickey Ward
  • Carl
no, since dicky is wards half brother hes not really much older so it wouldnt make sense
  • Usual Suspect
lol@putting these 3 on a project together let alone one about a fighter.

I cant wait for the leaked footage of Wahlberg, Russel and Bale fighting lol
  • Isn't this the director that always seems to get into fights with his cast and crew? I guess if he tries anything with Bale, we're in for a real fight on the set of a movie about fighters fighting.
  • Ward Fan
Awesome news. Three Kings and I <3 Huckabees are two of my favorite films and as a huge fan boxing and especially Mickey Ward I have been looking forward to this flick since i first heard about it a couple years ago. Also you may want to check your facts, Mickey Ward won the first fight against Gatti by decision.
