In 2006, the Fox Atomic production label was established under the big 20th Century umbrella as a home for comedy and ‘genre’ films - ie. films specifically aimed at those in their teens and 20s. Turistas was their rather inauspicious debut release, and since then they’ve spawned horror sequels The Hills Have Eyes 2 and 28 Weeks Later; comedies Miss March, The Rocker and The Comebacks; and Renny Harlin’s turkey-lookin’ 12 Rounds (not yet released in the UK, please explain its awfulness to me in the comments).

It seems now that the imprint is to be folded, with the chief exec moved over to Fox to continue shepherding just the same style of film there instead. In the Variety article that reports this breaking-news-come-rumor, there are also a couple of asides about films originally planned for the Fox Atomic label that now, presumably, will just be plain and simple Fox releases.

The next two big releases were set to be Chris Columbus’ I Love You, Beth Cooper and Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body which strike me as fairly likely candidates for at least small-scale box office success. Further along the pipe was the comedy Accidentes, a Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle to be written by Peter Baynham (we previously only knew Cohen was to produce, not necessarily star), and the rage-infected not-zombies-honest-guv sequel, 28 Months Later.

Months has long since been rumored but this marks the first reference in a trade paper which lends it a certain credibility. Of course, it was all but inevitable since the sequel failed to cancel out the goodwill engendered by the first part (personally, though, I definitely prefer Weeks to Days, principally because it eschewed the aesthetic hurdles adopted by the first part and only inherited some of the silliness, didn’t invent it).

I’m slightly mystified as to what real, tangible difference will be made by moving exec Debbie Liebling from her own labeled set up to a seat nearer the throne in the Fox power center. On the other hand, people are likely to lose their jobs over this and that can never be good.

Not mentioned in the post is that Fox Atomic hold the rights to a movie adaptation of the Grand Theft Auto videogames, but Peter reported last summer on why they probably wouldn’t make the movie anywho.

  • Days was heaps better then Weeks. Weeks only had Rose Bryne.
But yeah, I cant wait, I went to Weeks with a full bladder, jebus it was hard to contain.
  • I just wish they named the studio FOX Ultimate.

Then the text icon would read F U. That sounds more like something Fox would do.

    :p

I'm up for it because 28 Weeks Later didn't suck, although it had all rights to do so. Plus I remember hearing Danny Boyle might come back as director for the third.
  • I am not sure why they even created Atomic, it always struck me as a even stupider segment of the Fox studio umbrella, which is pretty hard to do as bad as Fox runs itself. Perhaps they should take whomever is running Fox Searchlight and give them the keys to the whole studio, Searchlight seems to be the only segment that has a clue as to what they are doing.
  • More bad news for Fox I guess. I really hope they can make a third film in the 28 days later franchise because I like the movies. I think it's very possible if Danny Boyle decides to come back and do something original with the franchise or if anything produce.
  • what a bloody shame. well, at least I'm looking forward to Jennifer's Body.
  • I've ever met any self-respecting zombie aficionado who thinks Weeks was better than Days. Days, for me ranks right next to Night of the Living Dead and Zack Snyder's Dawn, as one of the best zombie movies ever made. Weeks is probably somewhere halfway down the list.
  • melissa
I absolutely agree, Days is an apocolyptic work of art and better than the hollywood pumped up sequel. As a zombie aficionado you should remember that they are not zombies but rage infected humans.
  • Eh...my bet is their film approval process will change now that they'll be straight Fox releases.
  • Was never really a fitting name anyway, 'Atomic'. Fox Searchlight not only makes sense, but it also sounds better and does a better job. Never understood why they felt the need for the Atomic arm, and I guess they've just figured that out themselves.

I hope Boyle gets back in. I remember before the big hype of SM, he was asked by some entertainment site if he would, and he said he is interested in it.

Days was great, Weeks was friggin awesome, if boyle comes back to direct Months i won't be able to contain myself.
  • Well said! I'm one of those who also thinks that Weeks was better than Days! And speaking of it, I just bought it yesterday for 3$!
  • I agree, '28 Weeks' to me was fun to watch, especially the first 10 mins, but I def don't think its as good/better than '28 days'...
  • Sad to see people lose their jobs but I'm not really surprised that it got closed down, what with all those hits you just listed.

Can't wait for Months though. I'd be cool if it came out around the same time as World War Z so I can die of zombie overdose.
  • DAYS_FAN
Yeah, I have a hard time believing that someone liked Weeks better than Days. Days is so clearly superior. The thematic difference is all the better in Days, and it didn't have absurd CGI. Instead, it was thinking man's horror, with atmospheric tension and less gross-out moments. I think that Days is totally superior in every way. Weeks is pretty good, but Days is brilliant.

Days was better than Weeks, and will likely be better than Months purely from the standpoint that Days was (and still is) an original take on Zombie films. Everything since then (Weeks, Doomsday) is just a retread. I'm not saying that Weeks was terrible (I thought it was entertaining), but it didn't wow me the way Days did because I already knew what to expect.

But your link - and the U.S. Copyright Office - say(s) they do not own the rights to the Grand Theft Auto games, just a script which is apparently a remake of the old Howard film.
  • blitzwing
Why did they create Fox Atomic, when they already have Fox Searchlight? 28 Weeks Later was a good movie tho.
  • Danny Boyle needs to make 28 months later. I know he said he was interested during the Slumdog campaign.
  • missred
Not that this affects the story that much, but 'Miss March' is a Fox Searchlight film not Fox Atomic
  • SPARTACVS
I loved 28 Days Later, but although it was so very morbid, 28 Weeks is very nearly a classic for me, not just as a horror movie but a great movie, period. It was fantastic.

    1. Start a genre label underneath your parent company.
    2. Crank out low budget high profit genre films.
    3. Suck all the profits up into the parent company while charging all expenses to the genre label..
    4. Announce that the genre label has "lost money" and will close.
    5. Tell everyone involved in the films that they don't get their percentages because none of the films ever "made a profit."
    6. Write off all the "losses" on the genre label's corporate taxes.
    7. Pocket a boatload of tax-free income.
    8. Repeat.

wow your a cynic, and probably wrong.

anyway Danny Boyle is going to direct 28 Months Later. And though people have heard it is set in Russia... I believe it may shoot in NYC.

so... high possibility is isn't set in Russia, but the Rage may take Manhattan.

    -------
also, while some people don't understand why alot of people like 28 Weeks later better is probably because of production values. it was shot amazing, and 28 Days Later was shot on Digital Video cam, heck.... not even high def. so that effects alot of people, even if it is an amazing movie. it wasn't shot on decent enough equipment.
  • i will say this - 28 weeks did have some commentary on how perceived american resolution and the american position at the time in iraq even though it came from a fox studio...

although, the allegory / themes were not exactly clear or tidy...

  • Yeah Boyle coming back for the third should be good (if he decides to come back for the third that is). Fox Atomic folding isn't a surprise, I do feel bad for the employees that are going to lose their jobs though.
  • SEE, THEY SHOULD HAVE FINISHED THAT REVENGE OF THE NERDS REMAKE.

    NERRRRRRDS!!!!!!!!
  • But what will happen to Fox Atomic Island? [Anybody else know what I'm talking about?]
  • The best
Weeks was way better than days, weeks had that type of atmosphere that everything has gone to hell that not even the army which was probably about 30,000 people could contain a virus like that and months i hope it happens
  • mark welsh
I have a script written for 28 Months later, who can I give it to to try to get it made? I think the current audience would love it and a broader audience would be attracted to it
  • k
i want 28 months and 28 hours and 28 minutes and 28 years - god i love those speedy bloody freaks!
