Directed by Adam Berg, Carousel is a 2 minute 19 second short film sponsored by Philips. The film offers an exploration into one single frozen moment of time in a robbery gone wrong in one Hard Boiled-inspired continuous tracking shot. The story line is obviously taking a cue from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, featuring a swat team who has moved in to a decimated hospital, entering into a shootout with a bunch of robbers wearing sinister clown masks. Around 90 per cent of the footage and stunts were captured in camera.

Created entirely by Stink Digital, this new interactive campaign promotes Philips’ latest entrant into the television market, the CINEMA 21:9. Berg conceived it to work as an endless loop. Visitors to the microsite therefore have the option to ‘spin’ through the film’s single take shot repeatedly, to stop on a specific frame, or to watch it at the preordained speed. The film also contains embedded hotspots, which, when triggered, transport the viewer seamlessly from the heavily posted film to a behind-the-scenes version of the same shot. Check out the short film, embedded after the jump.

  • Wow, this is simply amazing.

    Woah...

    Ho-ly shit, that was wonderful.
  • Damn that's cool. How is something like this done?
  • freemachine
Beautiful. I love how there's a tacit narrative despite this being a single moment in time. I wonder if anyone would be ambitious enough to make a feature length film based on this concept, because I'd gladly sit through it.
  • This whole thing is full of win.
  • That was incredible.

However, this seems more like an homage to Hard Boiled...

Looks more like WATCHMEN than THE DARK KNIGHT.

Totally amazzing! Wonder how much it cost....
  • Dave
    Damn.

If you view it on the original Philips site, you can watch the little behind-the-scenes- bits at the markers they provide. Essentially it's people standing very still, objects being suspended by wires and CG money/explosions/bullets/smoke. Awesome work though.
  • Aha, I see. Thanks
  • That is amazing.
  • joshi38
I've seen stuff like this before, but not this long and not executed so well. I love how it loops around so seamlessly. I'm willing to bet they used mimes in a lot of the shots, but if they did, I couldn't tell.

    Really damn amazing.
  • The post mentions 90% of the effects were in camera. How? How is this done? I've seen it on the hero's special features but there it was like 90% sfx and little green poles that were removed but this has PEOPLE!
  • freemachine
Click on the link and check out the hotspots; they explain a lot.
  • Uh..holy shit.
  • Holy shit that is badass.
  • Fir3Wolf
Visually amazing and a nice behind-the-scenes look at how it was done. I've watched a few times already and really liking the tech behind it.
  • that is AMAZING!! Damn.
  • The most pleasing thing I have seen all year, that was great!
  • dont hate me
sorry to burst the bubble but this wasnt one complete shot. Theres about five joins I can see at 1st glance and the camera does things a camera cant do.

but I'm a senior VFX artist so its my job to notice things like that
  • brian
In terms of camera setup, how would do you think this was done?
  • GregoryV
That's exactly how I feel when I mix music or hear another DJ do a transition from one song to another. You can hear the mistakes and/or transitions which some people don't notice. Good eye!
  • Now tell me where does it say that this was done in 1 shot? It's a 1 moment short not a 1 shot short.
  • I've seen this dude's stuff on Motionographer. Yeah he's pretty nice.
  • pretty amazing, anyone else here see the miniature halo video similar to this?
  • dont hate me
Camera set up wise I'd hazard a guess saying it was shot using a very good camera op using a MK-V V2 AR steadicam system like the guy in this photo -

  • Crap
Overated piece of unoriginal crap. That is not film making. Swordfish and Matrix did it better. If john woo did this he'd have done it for real. Can't believe most of you are falling for this just like 3d.
  • This is some pretty amazing stuff. Bravo Adam Berg.
  • Wonderful. Nice to see The Dark Knight inspiring interesting short films like "Carousel". This Adam Berg fellow has a very bright future in filmmaking.
  • pretty freaking sweet if you ask me.
  • John
####ing awesome amazing! I can't stop watching it.
  • That guy being kicked through the glass is strangely appealing!
  • I've always been fascinated on the use of lighting on film; pretty interesting clip overall.
  • Joseph Ferrarelli
This is extremely similar to the ad campaign for Halo 3 involving the giant diorama. I wonder if the same people are involved. However, this is on a much grander scale than the Halo 3 campaign.
  • agreed
  • Infrafan
Wow. Simply amazing. Even cooler on the website.
  • That was an amazing video, I have nothing else to say about it.
  • That was awesome. Nice to see something "different."
  • very impressive - had my jaw open the whole way...
  • That is amazing.
And I love the twist ending.
  • edc
I've been waiting for someone to do something like this for years.

    thank you Adam berg.
  • iryannn
Yeah this was absolutely ridiculous. Loved it!
  • I could not stop watching this, so amazing.
