This Week in DVD: The Reader, The Spirit, and More

This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

THE READER
For some, The Reader is a gripping tale of morality anchored by its excellent performances. For others, it’s nothing more than that one Oscar-bait Holocaust movie that somehow earned itself a Best Picture nomination despite its middling reviews and lackluster response. As for me, I know it simply as the movie that fulfilled the Kate Winslet Oscar prophecy. Those who watch Extras will know what I’m referring to, but for those who don’t

Andy: I’d just like to say you doing this is so commendable. You know, using your profile to keep the message alive about the Holocaust.
Kate Winslet: My God I’m not doing it for that. I mean, I don’t think we need another film about the Holocaust, do we? It’s like, how many have there been? No, we get it, it was grim, move on. No, I’m doing this because I’ve noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust, guaranteed an Oscar. I’ve been nominated four times. Never won. The whole world is going, ‘Why hasn’t Winslet won one?’ …’Schindler’s List.’ ‘The Piano.’ Oscars coming out their arse.

Well said, Kate. Well said.
Blu-ray? Will be available next Tuesday (April 28).
Notable Extras: Deleted scenes, and 5 featurettes (”Adapting A Timeless Masterpiece: Making The Reader”, “A Conversation with David Kross And Stephen Daldry”, “Kate Winslet On The Art Of Aging Hanna Schmitz”, “A New Voice: A Look At Composer Nico Muhly”, “Coming To Grips With The Past: Production Designer Brigitte Broch”).

SPLINTER
Fans of B-horror thrillers can’t do much better than the fun-filled indie effort Splinter (watch the trailer), which despite sticking pretty closely to genre conventions, also offers up vastly superior characters and dialogue than most of the lousy horror films Hollywood churns out. The movie isn’t amazing by any means, so don’t go in expecting that, but for those simply looking for an entertaining and satisfying way to kill 90 minutes, it fills the void quite nicely. (Side note: Why use such boring, ugly cover art when the original poster/UK DVD art is so much more compelling?)
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

HOUSE OF SADDAM
Conceptually, the amount of potential in a dramatization of Saddam Hussein’s life is enormous, and if there was ever a channel capable of doing it justice it’s HBO. It’s disappointing then, that the reviews of House of Saddam are almost universal in their claims that the show fails to offer any real insight into the man, and its appeal is mainly superficial. I’m still somewhat interested in seeing the four-hour miniseries, however, since it apparently does succeed at being a well-made Sopranos/Godfather-esque crime drama. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but I’m willing to give it a chance.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: “The Fate of a Dynasty” featurette.

THE SPIRIT
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Over three months later, I still regret making the decision to see The Spirit in theaters. Never before have I struggled so desperately to sit through such a stunningly inane, visually disastrous, and horribly plotted mess of a film. To this day, I continue to have nightmares where Samuel L. Jackson randomly materializes just so he can inform me of how much he dislikes eggs. And if you’re wondering what the hell I’m talking about… Good. That means you haven’t seen The Spirit.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The 2-disc includes a commentary by director Frank Miller and producer Deborah Del Prete, featurettes (”Green World”, “Miller on Miller”), an alternate storyboard ending, and a digital copy of the film.

Oh and Adam, you are an idiot if you tell people to skip something you can't recommend either way. "I will be giving it a chance" bullshit does not cut the mustard sonny boy.

I thought the Spirit was awesome....

Gabriel Macht would do well as the Emerald Knight.
  • I think alot of people were upset at the fact that it was advertised as a movie with a possible darker tone. I remember seeing a few trailers that suggested this. After I watched a few scenes from Comic-Con, I realized what type of movie it was going to be.
  • Even though Kate said what she said about The Reader and what not, it's still a good film. She is definitely deserving of her Oscar but I agree with whoever said she deserved one earlier in her career.

I can't believe the Spirit's dvd producers put out a 2 disc version for 24 bucks, and flooded the Best Buy market with "Full Screen" single disc versions of this film.

Morons. They should have put out a single disc version with all the commentaries / bonus features and scrapped the Digital Copy.

This film has enough going against it.

The Spirit is definitely a rent. Not a buy by any stretch of the imagination, but it's rediculousness warrants watching in my book! No it doesn't make sense, yes it is terrible, yes it's probably the worst "superhero" movie ever. And yes I loved it.
  • The Spirit is possibly the worst film I have ever seen. It's almost unbelievable how awful that film is, avoid at all Costs!
  • Why am I so tempted to see The Spirit? People need to stop telling me how bad it is.
  • I can tell you it's not that bad. You should go ahead and rent it and find out for yourself.

The Reader bored me to tears. I feel that Kate Winslet should have won for Revolutionary Road, which is a vastly superior film. Splinter, however, was a cool horror flick with some great moments.

The Spirit is worthy of MST3K. I would fund a brand new season just to have an episode for this film.
  • Andrew
Ok, the Spirit was funny...don't knock it...I laughed out loud pretty much the entire movie. He tells his life story to a cat...come on! haha. It was great.
  • Bitchfest Anonymous
You are soooo right! A hand is wayyyy better then half-faces. That kind of marketing coulda made the movie a hit on DVD. Does it matter? It's not as if you actually like ANYTHING. You write for a movie website and just cry how everything is lame. I used to really like to come around and see what's out and read up on your thoughts but man...you just fucking hate on everything.

I have HBO and saw "House of Saddam". This is definitely a SKIP. It was a terrible mini-series. The biggest problem with the film is that it only focuses on a small part of his life. We never get to see how he was affected by the tribal mentality as a youth and how , after enduring violence at the hands of relatives, he ran away and became involved in politics. The story just picks up where he forces the president out of power and takes over. The narrative skips around quite a bit and much of the story is about Saddam and his son's time on the run from US forces. Even worse, the story ends abruptly with his capture and execution. We never get so much as a glimpse of the trial in which he insisted on defending himself. This trial went on for several years and I think represents a significant part of his life, especially since it ended with his execution. Ironically, like "W", this movie manages to paint a sympathetic picture of a leader who many people detest.

The Spirit just straight up suckedddd
  • Well good thing i don't know what you were talking about when it got down to the spirit!
  • The Spirit is essentially Hollywood at it's worst.
  • Laila
I can't help it. I have to rent the Spirit. I watched Punisher War Zone and that was terrible. I know. I have issues.
  • dagreenman18
Punisher was awesomely bad. Nothing like seeing a guy having a hole punched through his face to leave a big stupid grin on mine.
  • haha I see where you're coming from but...Punisher War Zone was terrible in a hilarious way. Like Wicker Man or Demolition Man or even Twilight. The Spirit, on the other hand, was a complete assault on life as we know it. just a warning.
  • People who don't "get" The Spirit make me LOL. Once again, everybody, it is a COMEDY! The movie is not supposed to be taken any more serious than the 19060's Batman series. It's great fun.
  • No, I "got" it. But it's not funny. It's idiotic.
  • Both cover arts for Splinter are pretty bland if you ask me. I've seen both before and I guess the other one would catch more peoples eye. They'll pick it up and be like "Oh hey, I hope this is as good as Saw 14."
  • hahahahaha no kidding
  • I watched the Spirit yesterday... well.. the first 12 minutes!

    That was enough for me.
  • I watched the Spirit yesterday... well.. the first 12 minutes!

splinter is a magnet release, which just sscreams to me that it's a waste of money.
  • there is not "Buy It" recommendation this week?
  • cltmikey
Barneys Super Singing Circus? It really is a down week
  • A.J
And it's "The Pianist" not "The Piano"
  • A.J
Kate Winslet's "Extras" bit is soooo fucking hilarious
  • cltmikey
Haha... did you see the one with Ben Stiller...that one was priceless. "'Which one are you again? Starsky or Hutch? I can never remember' 'Was that supposed to be funny?' 'I dont know...you were in it.'" Show was great
  • skip the Spirit? no way. I fucking love HORRIBLE movies. they're hilarious
  • it's boring for sure, and the dialogue sucks, but it's not the worst movie i've ever seen
  • The Reader wasn't that great of a film, to be honest. The story was bland, cliched, boring and laughable. Kate Winslet did give a good performance, though.
  • authentic.imitation
The Reader was a steaming pile of shit. The fact that it received Oscar nominations in major categories (picture, director, screenplay) really calls into question the credibility of the Academy, assuming it has any left in the first place (which, in my book, it did after rewarding No Country for Old Men & There Will Be Blood the year before).
  • I disagree. After the first third (all it was were sex scenes), I think the movie was great. The courtroom scenes were fantastic, and overall I thought it was a great story.
  • freemachine
There were some flaws in the film, such as it was difficult to believe the motivation of the characters in certain critical moments. But the film works on the level of consequences brought on by the action, or lack thereof, of the characters at those moments. This film is all about consequences and I loved it for that.
  • I agree, it seems that many are jaded by the film and Kate's performance.
  • It's the week of the lousy dvd box art. The Reader art is horrible and I can't believe Splinter didn't use that kick ass original poster art!! That's how I noticed Splinter in the first place.

Oh well....it's Magnet/Magnilia, so we'll trust their judgement, right? I mean, they did such a great job with Let the Right One In!
