Michael Chabon Writing John Carter of Mars

Almost a week ago, and without any fanfare, Nikki Finke listed John Carter of Mars as one of Michael Chabon’s screenwriting credits; this was then followed up by a Chabon fansite, The Amazing Website of Kavalier and Clay, and they got the author himself confirm:

I’ve been hired to do some revisions to an already strong script by Andrew Stanton and Mark Andrews. I wrote my original screenplay The Martian Agent back in 1995 because I wished I could do Burroughs’s Barsoom. So this is pretty much a dream come true for me.

And for me. If you aren’t doing a little dance around your room right now, then I don’t think you’ll be at my next birthday party.

Chabon’s screenplay for Spider-Man 2 (very similar in a great many respects to the shooting draft) was absolutely wonderful; better still are his novels - the very best of which, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay has been an on-again, off-again project for Stephen Daldry for some time. Frankly, that film needs a good solid shot of Gilliam or Kong-meets-Heavenly Creatures Peter Jackson. If you don’t know it, the best pitch I can probably give it is as a parallel universe version of the creation of Superman. The comic strip, not the character, note.

The tenth issue of McSweeney’s contained The Martian Agent: A Planetary Romance, a short story I assume was adapted from said screenplay. You can read an excerpt online for free, but stumping up for the whole book - indeed, any McSweeney’s book - is pretty well recommended.

Andrew Stanton is reportedly into casting and full-on prep for John Carter now, with shooting rumored to be scheduled for South Australian locations next year. With Chabon and Stanton working on the script, it simply can’t fail to be an absolute winner. This is something like a pulp fiction version of, say, Towne and Polanski collaborating on Chinatown but (hopefully) without the acrimony.

  • Chabon's involvement sounds very promising...let's hope they start production as soon as possible because we need solid science fiction....this could be a massive hit and franchise if done properly....I'm still wondering what it could have been if Faverau stuck with it...those concept images were amazing
  • Chabon's been a huge favorite of mine since Kav & Clay and Wonder Boys so I'm incredibly interested in anything he's attached to. So, yes, I'm dancing a little. But quietly, and in my chair. :)
  • Dancing's dancing. See you at the B-day bash.
  • I love Chabon. I'm reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier an Clay right now. Can't wait for it to be turned into a movie.

I was just lamenting Favreau's absence on this project when I saw the Woola maquette he posted on Twitter. But I think the project is in good hands now and I'm really looking forward to this. This film will be stiff competition when it's released.
  • Andrew Stanton, nuff said. The man hasn't disappointed yet.
  • I don't know...Carter as a movie looks a little hammy and silly, but who knows...with effects these days they can make anything somewhat interesting (except the recent Mummy movie...snore!)
  • I disagree. you can always anything work if you have the right people behind it. Key words: Anything and Right.
  • Ryan Carell
Chabon is probably my favourite contemporary writer, these days. I sort of worked backwards through his bibliography, starting with the complete version of the serial novel Gentlemen of the Road all the way back to where I am now, on The Mysteries of Pittsburgh. I've actually been meaning to run out and catch the Mysteries film adaption that just hit some theatres, but haven't had the time yet.

Great news on the John Carter front. Like Brendon mentioned, his Spidey 2 script was a gift and probably largely responsible for the content that made 2 the best in the trilogy by leaps and bounds. Chabon has been an adamant advocate for genre fiction across the last decade and a half or so and seems to be quite passionate about showing people that genre work can be, and often is, just as literary as your typical dramas. Can't wait to see what he'll bring to the table with this.
  • I don't know if this has been answered anywhere yet, but are they only adapting the first book (A Princess of Mars) or one of the others (John Carter of Mars is the last book)? I just finished reading it a short time ago. Pretty fun read, although some of the dialogue was more than hokey - that being said, Chabon's involvement is always a plus. I can't wait to see

Right on! This project has been sold on me since it was announced, and every new piece of info that comes along has been swell. I could never figure out why this film has never been made.
I can't wait to see it!
  • I'm not familiar with a lot of Chabon's work, but he sounds like an awesome writer. And with a draft already written by Stanton (and with the man himself directing) this is one of the my most anticipated movies. I really think Stanton is going to deliver some amazing films throughout his career (like he already has).

same, of all the pixar directors, he to me can see and get the best framing and direction on a shot. If that translates to his live action direction, we are in for a real treat.
  • I read a little bit of Chabon's Spider-man 2 script and it makes alot more sense as to why some of the scenes in the final cut were taking place. I'm happy with the final cut though.
