x-men origins: wolverine
The internet leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine might not be as detrimental as 20th Century Fox first feared. An early print of the film has now been downloaded over 1,000,000 times (TorrentFreak, thanks to downbeat), and who knows how many people have watched those downloads or copies of those downloads distributed to friends/family.

Based on TF’s numbers, a conservative estimate would be that 2 million people have watched the illegally downloaded film, which is the box office equivalent of $15-$20 million. Download numbers aside, the big concern was that the unfinished workprint might cause a wave of bad word of mouth that would detour the usual suspects from showing up opening weekend.

But Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the consumer research tracking statistics show “a high ‘wanna see’ rating for the film, which is said to be the No. 1 choice for young men and guys aged 31 and older,” the key demographics required for a monster opening weekend. But EW also claims that the film has only been downloaded “by more than 100,000 users”, so who knows the accuracy of these tracking numbers.

  • I didn't see the workprint and will not. I like seeing the final version of a film. Not the workprint
  • Jeff L.
Sorry, you'll have to repeat yourself, I didn't catch you the first time. Did you want to see the workprint?
  • I'm still going to see it! I haven't seen the leaked version though, so what good am I? I mean, where is the fun in watching something all the way through that isn't the product you'll see in theaters and has no special effects and what not? I like reading spoilers and all that but to watch a watered down version.. meh
  • At least you were willing to not watch the work print. I guarantee you that it would have ruined the experience of watching it in theaters.
  • I saw it, I'm not going to lie. I'm also not going to lie when I say that I feel no guilt in it because the fact is I'm still going to see it in theaters and always planned to unless it was just a gawd awful film, which it wasn't. It does suck though that business might be taken away from the film because of the leak, but it won't be my business lost.
  • Johnny Boy
Are you serious??? I saw it also and it was incredible bad! I mean worse than Street Fighter. The plot and characters are so under developed that it's laughable bad.
  • lujs
to be honest for me it was very funny to watch. I see myself at the theater comparing both versions and spoting diffences and so like a child lol
  • i'd watch even if i did have see the unfinished copy. i still want to see despite people saying it is not that good, but i think some people are trying to compare to the first two. think of it as something new and different even if it is in the same universe. i do understand why ppl are worried bc what the heck would cyclops be doing there. i am no comic book buff but i am pretty sure the two do not meet till they are in the x men together. as for deadpool, that part does worry me bc that pale tatt'd out guy looks ridicoulus and i hope is not deadpool and if it is i hope they explain stuff. people were didnt complain about the changes in watchmen and they gave it slack why cant they give this some slack. i understand they should not change stuff TOO much a few different changes will be ok as long as they make sense in the x men movie universe

People said that tv would kill the movie industry. People said that tape cassettes would kill the music industry. People said that video taping would also kill the movie industry.
People who want to see this movie will, leaked onto the Internet or not.
  • I'm glad to hear that the leak won't have too detrimental an effect on the opening of this film. I didn't have any interest in seeing the leaked version, like many have already said, because I like the experience of seeing movies (especially ones I look forward to seeing) on the big screen. The reports I got back about this movie after the leak were what I had expected: my boyfriend was outraged (but he has a Gambit tattoo so I doubt there would be any way to fully please him, short of it being his own movie), others said it wasn't bad, definitely better than X3, but not amazing. And that's really all I had ever asked of this film. I just didn't want it to suck.
Now, knowing that the selling of it in theaters won't suck either, I'm just more excited to see it.

i still say fox leaked it to get the press, and it looks like they actually did something right. this movie is going to great at the box office even though it's a steaming pile of crap. oh and richard waltemath that is deadpool. its the only instance of "deadpool" you'll see in the movie. people didn't let the changes in watchmen slide. most of the fans were the ones that didn't show up. that's why watchmen barely broke 100 mil.
  • too shay sir, too shay (however the hell you spell it)
  • touche, I think.
  • Jeff L.
    No, Richard was right.

As a lifelong pirate, I can tell you that I still intend to see this in theaters (this goes for most good movies), even though I download it. I have many friends who do exactly the same.

The night out to the theater is an event - there's dinner or concessions, chatting before and after the movie, listening to music with your friends in the car on the way, etc... Not to mention the benefit of a sophisticated sound system and gigantic HD screen.
  • I have to question the torrent numbers. Two million sounds kinda high to me, I have to wonder, are these COMPLETE downloads? After all, torrents are delivered in pieces, not whole files, so if someone is marked as "having a file", they may only have pieces of it and not the whole thing.

Plus it's possible that some of the 2 million are repeat attempts... users often find one torrent to be "poor quality" and will begin downloading two or more others to find good torrents.

I didn't think the work print was going to hurt the film anyway. The people who've seen it either weren't going to pay to see the film anyway (and just watch some bootleg someone made by recording it with a camera) or were just fans who were excited to see it already. Most people who want to see it will do so when it officially comes out and probably wouldn't want to see an unfinished film anyway. I've seen the leaked version and will watch it in theaters just to see what changes were made and better CGI.
  • Remember, this is just a work print of the film. This does not have final editing or FX or music. That being said, from what I understand this also does not incorporate the additional footage which was recently shot. I would expect any true movie fan to see this film if they are interested. That includes anyone that has seen the work print. It's best to see any movie in a theater and pay for the experience. I'll be there opening weekend to see this no matter what.

DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE! it is bad. workprint or final cut...nothing will make this movie good.
  • I may or may not have the workprint, but I also may or may not have actually watched it. Because if I had downloaded it, I probably would have decided that I was willing to wait the extra month and see it in theaters, that way love it or hate it I got to experience it finished, the way it should have been.

    If I had it.

And honestly, I haven't even been putting much stock in reviews, because half of the people complaining are hardcore fans who will complain anyway (no offense meant, but seriously, they always complain about SOMETHING). And as I do not fit in with that group their opinions are of no interest to me (as I'm sure mine is to them.) And the other half are people I generally don't agree with, so I'll just have to see it and decide for myself.

If it's better than X3 I'll love it.
  • Johnny Boy
It's worse than X3. Worse than Ghost Rider... and as bad as Elektra and Catwoman. Save your money and skip this one.
  • Ben
Nothing is as bad as Elektra. Nothing.
  • Meow mix guy is now my favorite talkback poster

saw it, and it was actually relieving, considering i was expecting this movie to be nothing but a chance to see wolverine finally do some really awesome shit, which he does. didnt expect it to have awesome plot or awesome acting, just wolverine doing awesome shit. helicopter action sequence is where it's at.

ill definitely be seeing this in the theater, cant wait to see the final effects shots and added footage.
  • It's nice to see people are still interested in this movie. I however, almost forgot that it was coming out, I thought it did a few weeks ago. I'm sure I'll find time to watch the movie in theaters but I can't guarantee anything.
  • freemachine
SWIM saw the workprint and said that it was far from jaw-dropping. While being generally unimpressive, SWIM said that it was not as bad as X3. SWIM will probably not see it in the theaters, because all the reshoots in the world and no matter how much they beef up the FX in the final version, the movie will still suffer from the same fatal flaws. SWIM expects that Twitter will be the death of this film, not piracy.
  • are you writing in the third person?
  • freemachine
    SWIM = (S)omeone (W)ho (I)sn't (M)e
  • What’s up ‘SWIM’? You are no longer ‘freemachine’. From henceforth you shall be known as ‘SWIM’.

I actually read JMoney's reply before your comment so it does sound like you're talking in the third person. Oh yeah that line up top is from The Office.

When cimpared to Wolverine, X3 is a masterpiece.

One of the worst comic book movies. It's really bad.
  • Eduke
i download the workprint, but havnt seen it yet, i whant to see the finish version first and like "lujs" sayd, i am going to compare both versions, see if the now scenes affect too much in the movie, the FX, the music, i think is a grate opportunity to see a part of finishing a movie, for many ppl.
  • I almost downloaded the work print but I don't want to spoil the film for me. I can't wait to see it.
