Michael Sheen played Lucian, leader of the Lycans in not one, not two but three Underworld films - two of which I can personally identify as being particularly tedious, the third of which I’m passively avoiding. Now he’s set to switch sides and head up the Vampires as Aro, boss of the fangsters in New Moon, Chris Weitz’s Twilight sequel.

The Daily Mail got the story and a quote from Weitz to back it up:

Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires. Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.

Weitz is definitely a more interesting and talented director than his brother, and his ‘active pursuit’ of Sheen is a class play. He’s taking this film seriously when it would be so easy not to. Any shortcomings of The Golden Compass were not through Weitz’ sincerity and hard work.

Aro doesn’t seem to be one of the main characters in New Moon - fans of the ’saga’, please fill in the blanks in the comments - but he does seem set to recur in future installments. Weitz has done a favour for whatever director takes over the franchise with film three by getting Sheen on board.

We in the UK have been fortunate enough to receive a good hunk of Sheen already this year with Tom Hooper’s excellent The Damned United. That’s one of Sheen’s biopics, and adds notorious football manager Brian Clough to a gallery of real-life roles that’s probably extensive enough to earn him a mention in the Guinness Book of Records. Here are the others, by my count: Robbie Ross in Wilde; Tony Blair in The Deal and The Queen (and, soon, The Special Relationship); Jeremy Dyson in The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse; Kenneth Williams in Fantabulosa; Nero in Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire; HG Wells in HG Wells: War With the World; and David Frost in Frost/Nixon.

I’m always impressed by that list. I’m curious how deliberate it is that Sheen has ended up playing so many biographical characterisations. He seems to suggest it’s accidental, but this score seems way outside of any random roll of the roles. At the very least, this constitutes the most flexible flavour of typecasting I’ve ever seen.

Wow looks like they are going big on this one. Dakota Fanning and now Michael Sheen. I enjoyed Golden Compass a lot though it didnt compare to the book.

Chris Weitz might actually make this movie good...
  • I know next to nothing about Twilight, so I don't know how big of a role Sheen will have. But I will say that I'm pretty impressed that they actually got him, and I too enjoyed Golden Compass. It's just a dilemma because I absolutely loathe Twilight. Like... hardcore despise it. The only reason I saw the last film was because I was told to write a "con Twilight" article for the school newspaper. I could have done so without torturing myself by watching it in its entirety, but I figured I needed to maintain some semblance of credibility. *grumble*
  • Aro's not a main character, he's part of a sect which keeps the vampire world in check, stepping in where laws are broken. He's not in New Moon much, but the threat of him and his brethren hang over not only this book but also the remaining ones in the series. Michael Sheen's been good in whatever I've seen him in thusfar, so there's no reason to doubt his ability to pull off a good "Aro". He just needs to act creepy but friendly, all at once!
  • wow, they're shaping up to have a stellar cast.
  • Wow so random. Michael Sheen deserves better than this.
  • Sure, but this is a good filler, probably.

i thought you wrote "boss of the fagsters" for a second. hahah.
  • Well at least he's not playing Tony Blair in this one.

well, underworld wasn't "tedious" as you put, sheen was great in them, too bad now he's in this trash
  • His role is small, but the character within the realm of that world is huge.
  • hes above this garabage..must need money

/film is always claiming that they do not enjoy the Twilight series, yet they're the first to jump at any news pertaining to it
  • I've never said I don't like the Twilight series. Not once.
  • Wow, he sure has experiance being a vampire. Underworld, Frost, tons. but I always imagined Aro younger, huh.
  • No! Michael Sheen why?
  • Look, it's the oldest Backstreet Boy.

  • I was surprised when I read this news and though Aro is a small role, he is a crucial role and Michael Sheen, I'm sure, will do a fantastic job. Chris Weitz is gathering quite the cast.

Sheen also played real-life character Art Honeyman in MUSIC WITHIN (2007).
  • I'm not the biggest fan of the Twilight series but I have heard the role of Aro is a good one. I've read the comments and it sounds like he's going to play a much bigger role in future films. I thought they were moving kinda quick with New Moon and all but it's nice to hear they're not hitting any snags while already filming in Vancouver.
