Jason Bourne 4 Now Aiming for Summer 2011

More Bourne

Last we heard, Universal was trying to get a fourth film in the Jason Bourne series on track for a Summer 2010 release. Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass were signed on to return, all they needed was a screenplay and a shooting schedule that fit. But the tentatively discussed Summer 2009 shoot doesn’t seem to be on the horizon.

Producer Frank Marshall updates us on the status via Twitter saying that Bourne Ultimatum/Ocean’s Twelve scribe George Nolfishould have a draft by June” 2009 and that the film “is in the works for Summer 2011.” This of course would mean that the film would need to go into production by Summer 2010, October at very latest. “It really take long to get these scripts right! :),” admits Marshall. Marshall has previously stated that he would like to see Bourne go to South America in his next adventure, which will be the first movie not based on a Robert Ludlum novel.

  • I think the Bourne movies I will have to watch twice. I heard good things about it, so I rented Supremacy and Identity, and although I liked them, I didn't get why people were calling them the best action movies in years (I have yet to see Ultimatum, so I am probably really wrong and off based). Anyways, we will see...

They are ALL-ACTION in my opinion, with fist fights and car chases/crashes from beginning to end. They are supposed to be action/thrillers, but all of the action makes my senses numb to the breadcrumbs Bourne follows in his quest to find his true identity. In fact, it's hard to find the twists and turns compelling when they are so obviously contrived.

dont bother seeing the 3rd. It is a major disappointment.
  • No way! The third film is amazing, & the most highly praised in the (now) trilogy.
  • 2010 or 2011 I don't care as long as it happens. Ultimatum was great and surely the 4th will pick up where the 3rd left off.

Style, cinematography, script, and acting come together to make a good movie.

Do we need this? Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers ahead: I mean what reason will anyone (the CIA) have to chase Bourne anymore? The end of Ultimatum made it so he wasn't of any interest to the CIA. He wanted to disappear and live his life. It would be so stupid to have him just live his life and then suddenly his old enemies like the Russians come to get him. He was great at erasing any trace of himself and that's how it should remain.

It just wouldn't make sense to have another adventure when the end of the 3rd movie wraps the whole Bourne story up really well - it all comes full circle. Let's NOT have this franchise ruined

oh yee of little faith. This is Greengrass we are talking about. And even if it is by chance a disappointment, do the previous 3 suddenly become unwatchable?
  • paul
Totally agree with what both of you are saying. Not really necessary but the first 3 movies are still fantastic. But really there is SO MUCH material that they have to work with from the books that they haven't really touched yet.
  • steven22
Amen!!! I agree with you man... making a 4 one... is gonna push it.....
  • Yvette54
People, come on ... use your imagination. Yes, Terrance V the third film tied up the 'Bourne on the run from the CIA' story plot, but think about it. This makes Bourne a 'free agent' to use his mad skills to try and make up for his past--like rescuing captives from terrorists or even acting as an independent consultant, advisor or agent for Pamela Landy now that he's no longer hunted by the CIA. The creative avenues are endless!

Paul, I believe you are right. The plan, I believe, is to use one of the older Ludlum novels as a template for a new Bourne adventure, while adding 'new' elements to the mix. The fourth Bourne film will be a 'reboot' for the franchise much in the way "Star Trek 2009" was for the original Star Trek series. They have cleaned the Bourne slate, now they can create 'nearly' original stories for the Bourne character--as much as the Ludlum Estate allows them--as long as the story relates to the world Ludlum created.

I think Universal attempted to obtain sole ownership of the Bourne character as well as the collection of Ludlum's work, but his Estate balked on giving up the character. I don't blame them, because this leaves the Estate a tad of creative control, but it would have been easier for Universal to go with a completely 'original' Bourne story if they had gotten the Bourne character as well.

Obviously, reading is new to you. Ever hear of The Bourne Legacy, Betrayal or sanction???
  • Walter
I just finished reading The Bourne Betrayal and now, I am reading The Bourne Sanction. If you read The Bourne Betrayal, you will want to see this movie as a book. I have to go back and read Bourne Legacy because that comes before Betrayal and I received that as a gift.

I just started the Bourne Sanction and the first chapter starts where Betrayal ends. So far, this book may be better than the Betrayal and I would like to see this as a movie, also.

Not to ruin it but in Betrayal, these 2 terrorist brothers try to kill Bourne because they believe he killed their only sister in one of their missions. In Sanction, he is a college professor and another professor wants him to head security of project that they believe will interest terrorist. Both are page turners. The audiobooks are good for commuters.

It will not continue past the 3rd Bourne....the next movie is going to be a prequel
  • A prequel? There's no way that would work. Damon is ten years older than he was in the first film, it would be entirely unbelievable.
  • mlpt
Yes but he is still remembering things. There might be something in his past yet to come haunt him, something never touched on in the previous movies. There's is enough there for a good screenwriter and director to work with and I will definatle go see another Bourne movie.
  • Actually, the last two Bourne movies have nothing to do with the books except the names. (so this wouldn't really be the first movie not based on a Ludlum novel). The movie and book stories are very different. I like the movies a lot, but the books' stories are so excellent that I think it was a mistake to ignore them.

Oh well. They're still great movies.
  • krazyguy
Can't Hollywood ever leave a franchise alone? Ultimatum wrapped up the story very nicely. Now unnecessarily making another one will diminish the series' impact.
  • Exactly what i was thinking. The ending in Ultimatum was perfect, the circle was closed, but oh well Hollywood had to ruin everything.
  • mikeyclt
I agree that the triology had a bow on it. But if this movie is done as well as the others there is no reason that we cant enjoy it. Just take it as an action filled no brainer. Heck they could even go back and show when he was just a killing machine. That'd be fun.
  • natram
    bourne movies FTW!
  • I dig the Bourne series like crazy, and would be pumped about a fourth movie, but I think everyone's missing the point here: Damon and Greengrass are essential, but there's a key missing element here: Tony Gilroy. Never mind Ludlum, whose role in this film series was basically just creating the character--Gilroy wrote (or co-wrote) all three of the Bourne films.

As for George Nolfi? Sure, he was credited (with Gilroy and another) on Ultimatum, but the rest of his filmography is mediocre: Ocean's Twelve was far and away the least of that series, while Timeline (remember it?) and the recent The Sentinel both were considered mediocre at best. I realize a screenwriter can't always be judged on the final product, but... this sure doesn't give me a lot of faith in a new Bourne flick. Get Gilroy back in the room and maybe you can make a fourth Bourne that stands up to the rest.

  • Bourne 4 is gonna run rings around that latest 007 garbage.
  • cat
Awesome! Another bourne movie to look forward to! But any word on Damon? I hope he's in it.
  • Why don't you read the article?
  • I saw the heading but was at work and didn't have time to read the full article until now. So, I didn't notice that.
  • Hoof
I don't mean to be too picky, but it was the second sentence in the article, and Matt Damon's name is in bold.

It would've been quicker to glance at the article than to right the comment.
  • Cat
I didn't have time to read it at work. I posted a comment so I would get everyones comments and opinions.
  • rathersmoothe
Why the constant comparisons between Bourne and Bond? I enjoy both franchises but the characters exist in different realities (or at least they should).

I agree that the Bourne series should be left as it is. If you keep milking the formula for the sake of producing movie after movie, you just end up with the likes of the (yikes) Highlander series.
  • if this were the case then you must hate the bond movies?????????
  • colonel woof woof
To me, Bourne is more realistic than Bond.
  • Amy
I think I remember Matt Damon saying on the Daily Show that if they made a fourth one, it would be called "The Bourne Redundancy"... I think this series is spent personally.
  • Lawdog
Beat me to it. The books and movies are so far apart that I consider them seperate, yet equally awesome, entities.
  • I agree with Terrence V. This story ended with Ultimatum. It makes no sense to have a fourth installment. Damon and Greengrass both stated in interviews at the release of the third film that it would be stupid to make another, and now they are going back on their word. Disappointing. This is a transparent move on the part of the studio to make a crapload of money on a franchise, with no regard paid to the fans and a coherent storyline. Lame.
  • The studio was going to make a fourth Bourne anyway, with or without Damon/Greengrass, so it's actually a good thing that both of them (and of course the excellent Tony Gilroy) are on board.
  • I'm glad they are making a fourth, the first 3 didn't disappoint and I doubt this will....
  • yay, another movie of shaky cameras!
  • I was just wondering the other day if they were going to make any more Bourne movies since there aren't any novels left. I guess this is good news and I hope they get a script that is good. Getting things done right takes some time so it's looking good so far.
  • After watching the three movies (and really enjoying them) I actually bought this peace-of-crap alleged fourth installment, but it was actually written by a different writer (deceptive marketing ftw). It was complete and utter garbage.

Can't wait for this one though, ultimatum has to be one of my favorite action movies, and even though the story ended nicely, I don't see a problem of either continuing the story OR having a prequel (this I would really enjoy)
  • Alan
Aliens vs. Predator vs. Terminator vs. Jason Bourne

    You read it here first!
  • mikeyclt
    vs. Batman
  • Here's what the story will be:
    1. someone in South America is killing people, pretending to be Jason Bourne. he has to come out of retirement to hunt down the guy.
    2. during his now normalish life, something triggers some latent programming, causing him to back out and carry out his missions. So he's on the hunt to track himself down and find a cure.
    3. the government recruits him to come out of hiding and take out some giant threat to the country.
    4. Franke Potente's character isn't dead after all, and he's got to rescue her!

These movies all start to seem similar... I wish they'd have followed the books more - the one set in HK / China was pretty badass.
  • Delta
    Two words: the Jackal
  • stew.pid fawker
Yea they could use the Jackal or there was stuff about Bourne in a group called Medusa.
  • PBS
I'm with you. I hope they don't ruin the franchise like happened with The Matrix. But, last we heard, Nikky Parsons was on the run, and the CIA threatened to hang the failure of Treadstone on Pamela Landy. So, actually the story left enough teasers so that it's really not finished yet. I can hardly wait!!
  • Jason
I'm sure that Bourne and nicky have history that has yet to come out
  • hudel
I am sure I will enjoy Bourne IV, albeit is has a political agenda emphasizing the evil use of the CIA (e/g: 'Bush lied...people died, etc...'). Unfortunately Hollywood’s view of the world slants far to the left, while Robert Ludlum slants right.
Hopefully Bourne (Matt Damon) can take on a John Wayne attitude and wipe out a bunch of bad guys that hate America. Maybe Bourne can punish the likes of Achmedinajad, Kim Pyong-il or Chavez.
  • Robert
I hear you! There are so many movies made today that target the U.S. government as a big mean bad guy because of the leftness of Hollywood. I still love the Bourne series and I, too, hope the CIA gets a better image. Maybe Landy takes charge and the CIA targets REAL bad guys for the good of the country like they do in real life.
  • kawkeegk
Well technically there is another bourne novel, not done by Ludlow....Bourne Sanction. Good read, but I think it really stretches off the others. I will watch just cause I liked the others so much, but won't expect much.
