Movie Trailer: Duncan Jones’ Moon

moon

I’ve always had a soft spot for sci-fi thrillers, so when I first heard about Duncan Jones’ Moon, I was immediately intrigued. The film tells the story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who is sent on a three-year one-man mission to the moon to mine Helium-3, which has become Earth’s primary source of energy in the future. As his stint there is winding up, a freak accident and its ensuing events threaten to change everything. After seeing the film at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta wrote, “Like last year’s Sleep Dealer, I’m convinced that Moon is at the beginning of a new renaissance of indie sci-fi feature films which will challenge Hollywood’s big budget computer generated spectacles.”

Now courtesy of IGN, the trailer for Moon has debuted. The trailer features some great visuals, some appropriately creepy voiceover work by the onboard computer, and what appears to be yet another bravura performance by Rockwell. Clint Mansell’s score, as usual, promises to haunt your dreams for years to come. As usual, hit the jump for the trailer and let us know your thoughts in the comments. You can also follow the director of the film, Duncan Jones, on Twitter. Moon will go into limited release on June 12, 2009.

iId love to go see it but it is a limited release and in the small towno (maybe 15,000 people) I stay in, I am affraid I will never get to see it. Yes the trailer is truly awesome.... I wish I could find a copy.... I hope it comes out on video/DVD's so it can be rented....

Thats what would happen to me lol~
  • Wow. Definitely need to see this one. Looks fantastic, love the music.
  • ohnocmon
saw this at sundance. you won't be dissapointed. Sam Rockwell's performance is unforgettable. Score is beautiful as well. Seeing it again in theaters for sure.

This looks amazing! I love real sci fi.

I know alot of people disagree with me, but Soderbergh's Solaris is one of my favorites. I just like these hardcore sci fi films. Sunshine was good too, but it sorta crumbled last act. Primer is another good one.
  • solaris is a fantastic film (and top of the list by soderbergh for me) - one of the most intense movies in terms of taking thoughts on life and death away from it...

this reminds of it, and i hope it isn't in territory too similar as to recycle ideas.
  • i agree with you about soderberghs solaris. i like it alot. i love the original to no end, it's nice when two different versions of the same story can exist in one universe. both good in their own ways.
  • I love Primer and agree with you on solaris but I don't like Solaris at all too slow for my taste.
  • Looks as good as I expected it to. Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, this will be a treat.
  • Looks amazing. Cannot wait to see this film.
  • "“Like last year’s Sleep Dealer, I’m convinced that Moon is at the beginning of a new renaissance of indie sci-fi feature films which will challenge Hollywood’s big budget computer generated spectacles.”

Peter, I totally agree with you. I am curious to know if MOON could actually be better than the Star Trek movie.
  • They are on entirely different ends of the Sci-Fi spectrum.
  • yeah pretty much.
  • Nick
Duncan Jones? That's David Bowie's son. The movie looks awsome. I guess the talent runs in the family.

it's got kind of a sphere -ish feel to it. i'm excited
  • Mr. B
    color me intrigued

I liked it better when it was called Sunshine.

    J/K... looking forward to this!
  • or when Sunshine was called 2001 ;)
  • freemachine
Or when 2001 was called Solaris ^_^
  • Having seen both films, I can safely assure you that they are completely different.

    Moon is better though.
  • I thought of Sphere too but that wasn't a great movie. This looks promising though.
  • Yessssssssssssssssssss
  • i am very excited being a huge rockwell and scifi fan

"You can also follow the director of the film, Duncan Jones, on Twitter."

Yeah, we get it. You don't need to refer to Twitter in every story, /film.
  • Who else loves that title shot at the end?
  • This looks amazing. Hopefully it doesn't fall apart in the third act like Sunshine did.
  • Ryan
I saw it at Sundance and it was great. I am pretty sure that it wasn't the final cut though. I am very excited to see what the theatrical version looks like.

Note to J.J. Abrams. You need more then flashy special effects to make a great sci-fi movie. You need a deep story with well written dialogue. 'Moon' looks to be a terrific example.
  • Early reviews of Star Trek indicate that he already knows that and has applied it to his film.
  • If anyone has that, it is Abrams. Have you seen any of his work?
  • If you watch lost and many other jj Abrams things you will notice that the most important part of his things is the story and the atmosphere so ill say you are a little off with your comment.
  • RPK
Considering I'm not/wasn't a fan of 'Lost', 'Fringe', "Felicity' or pretty much anything he's done, I stand by my comment wholeheartedly.
  • so you're basing your argument on a mediocre 3rd Mission Impossible movie and Cloverfield (which he didn't even direct)? maybe know what you're talking about before making an ass of yourself in front of everyone on /film.
  • Can you reaffirm for me what they do give away in the trailer isn't what happens in the film? or what we see is what we get?
  • Everything that happens in the trailer happens in the film. But I would wait before passing any form of judgment on it. I went in to Moon without having seen a lick of footage and was pleasantly surprised with the result. Having seen the trailer after the fact, I can tell you that audiences will still be surprised at what Moon has to offer.

Bottom line: It's a great film and Rockwell is superb in it.
  • Seeing this at tribeca film festival. Can't wait for may 2nd!!
  • I stopped watching the trailer a third of the way through - I don't want to see to much and spoil my viewing experience. I'm convinced.
  • dxr
Smart man. God what is it with trailers these days? They seriously give away EVERYTHING.

My girlfriend and I go to the movies often and our (lame) running joke after every trailer is "Don't have to see that one now".
  • MMC
    Remake of 2001?
  • guy917
    dude!
    no, not at all
  • I'm seeing this May 3rd at the San Fran Int Film Festival! It looks like a mix between Solaris(Soderbergh's) and 2001! Can't wait.
  • Whoa, dude. 2001: A Space Odyssey meets Primer, possibly? INTERESTING!
  • I can't wait. But wasn't this on io9 back during Sundance?
  • Reminds me of 2001 and Solaris (Tarkovsky's, not Soderbergh's). If it's anywhere near the caliber of those films it would be good, but I'll be worried if it doesn't have any original ideas.
  • Chris Marlowe
is that kevin spacey doing the computer voice?
  • Chris Marlowe
i just checked, and it is kevin spacey
  • George Stolpe
Saw this two weeks ago with my kids at the Sarasota Film Festival and it was amazing. If Rockwell doesn't get a Best Actor nod, he's robbed again because he's the whole movie. Can't wait to see it again.
  • Glad to hear that. Rockwell is a good actor and should be awarded for his efforts. From what everyone is saying about his performance in this film, he has a good shot at winning a few awards.
  • what's the running time?
