Star Trek Clip #3: Spock Meets Scotty

star trek
Yesterday we posted the first two video clips from JJ AbramsStar Trek. Today we bring you one more, this one from Collider, which features a scene where James T Kirk (Chris Pine) and Scotty (Simon Pegg) sneak on board the enterprise and are confronted by an angry Spock (Zachary Quinto). Watch the clip embedded after the jump.

• Scotty!!! :D Can't wait!!! OMG
• rcesm
Words cannot express how much I love Simon Pegg. I'm SO happy he's in this movie. It'll make it that much better!
• OMG the turbolift door swoosh is awesome.
• now THAT'S excitement!!! :D
• Solid
You WILL answer meeeeee. What is that a jedi mind trick? What's with all that shiny flashing stuff? Whatever, I'm already there. First star trek movie I'll ever see in theaters!
• I'm right there with you. And it'll be my first ST movie ever. Sad really.
• agreed. First Star Trek film i'll see in theaters also. I want to see more though! It looks awesome.
• They were NOT kidding with all the effing glares in this movie. They may as well have held Kirk and Spock action figures in front of the sun and had pine and Quinto do V.O.'s its not like anyone would have even been able to tell the difference.
• Yea, I dunno what they were thinking. 20 years from now, someone's going to stumble upon this film and wonder why this film alone has terrible lens flare.
• Cole
I like the lens flares...
• Niiice. The one that has me the most excited though is Bones meeting Kirk.
• Pseudonym
those flares are kind of distracting
• tom
lens flare is the new shaky cam

Why does JJ always got to be ahead of the loop?
• I think you mean ahead of the curve. People are left out of the loop.
• The best movie ever!
wow.....that ......like all the other clips and trailers .........was so exciting i just can't fight it you ....you know ...you know ...i like it......................................

boring............. I mean WOW THAT WAS SO FACKEN AWESOME TO THE MAX EXTREME MTV RULES presented by Turbo Fuel
• You don't make any sense but your T&E reference makes up for it.

What the fuck is up with all that lens flare?
• Whiskey
Erm.. I see I'm not the first to notice. =/
• the more flares the better.
• JJAbrahams
I'm not a big fan of the lens flare, either, but from a purely scientific standpoint, traveling by starship is going to cause a lot of light flooding into view from all of the stars, isn't it?
• Alex
Has anyone ever told you your name is really similar to the guy who created Alias and Lost? You know that JJ Abrams dude. I even think he's directing this!
• I hope it's actually him defending himself. 8D That would be super awesome. I have to say the flares do bug me a little though, authentic or not. Sorry JJ.
• RPK
What is with the shakey camera??? This isn't fricken 'Cloverfield 2: Lost in Space' is it? I stand by my contention that Abrams is a hack (for proof, please rent MI:3, Cloverfield, Armegeddon (he wrote the screenplay) ) .
• Hacks are fun.
• He's half hack. Half his resume is bullshit and half is good to brilliant. Hopefully this leans towards the latter.
• lolCorey
Ironically better than anything you could produce. rimshot.jpg
• RPK
I don't know about that! I just "produced" myself taking a dump and it was eerily similar to MI:3.
• Uhhh, angry Spock? I though Vulcans felt no emotions!
• Spock is special. half human, half vulcan, logic and emotion run rampid in his veins!
• Oh yeah! I feel like such a fool.
• vulcans still have emotions, they just suppress them. extreme stress or other external forces (ie spatial anomalies) can disrupt their control.
• So far from what i've seen the characters seem very well written. they feel like their original counterparts but updated for today's audiences.
• Stranger
Will Abrams or his DP explain the reason for the lens flares? If they're causing this much of a fuss, I'd think they'd have prepared an answer for them. Personally, I don't mind.
However, all these trailers and clips just keep selling me on this film. I'll WAIT TO SEE IT BEFORE I JUDGE IT.
Some of you get so excited - either in a positive or negative way - that you think this movie is going to be the fucking second coming of Christ or end up destroying the universe.
The closer to the release, the more polarized people's reactions become. (Which is intentional. The studios and advertising companies want that. It's called awareness of product. Way to be sheep. Especially so when you keep mocking this thing.)
It's a Star Trek movie that is superior obviously to everything they've done cinematically in the last 20 years. So, either see it or shut the fuck up.
To reiterate, it's a Star Trek movie.
• aaaaaaaaaaa
well fucking said!
• I have never been a Star Trek fan but i am X-ing down the days on my "Lost" calender until this movie comes out.
Honestly the camera flares were quite distracting but i like the vib that it adds to the film. Even more, i like that JJ is pushing the envelope and trying new techniques.

pretty sure the lens flare is actually meant to be active beacon lights on the clear consoles around the room. Best I can tell after a second viewing is that the room is made of clear dividers with moving lights on them. By adding the lens flare, I think it's meant to suggest we are viewing the scene through those dividers. It's a cool idea to try and create a feeling of presence in the room, but it comes across as more distracting than intended.
• drmecha
I dunno. the age of the crew still bothers me.
• Why?

John Cho is older than Takei was when Trek started, and the rest of the cast apart from Pine and Yelchin are over 30, with Pine being 28, hardly a 'young' cast, it's in the same ballpark as the show.
• why? the new actors are at the right age range.

You have to remember that the original cast from the show (Shatner and the gang) were good looking people too.
• it's all about the flashes in new star trek
• Screw collider, or their player. It freezes and plays at half speed.

I'll wait for Youtube to pick this up.
• this looks very cool. Simon Pegg is so awesome at what ever role he plays
• That scene was great I can't wait to see the whole movie.
• I was kinda worried about Quinto as Spock, he didn't seem to resemble Nimoy in any way other than appearance, but he really nailed the performance in this clip.
• This movie keeps looking better and better. Quinto does a fine job so far from the clips I've seen.
• Man, I didn't realize that it was Simon Pegg who plays Scotty until now... Nice scene! Love Pegg in it, also really like Quinto as Spock.
• Weyland_Yutani
I'm really looking forward to this film.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the lens flares are an intentional part of the film design. It definitely explains why they chose to light the bridge in the manner that they have. If nothing else, they have succeeded in giving this film a unique look.

It's all context. I'm sort of put off with the "color-washed metallic" look of T4 in the small video clips, but that film, like Star Trek, will probably look pretty sharp viewed cohesively on the big screen.
• The shiny flashing stuff is called lens flare.
• mangoos
i kinda dig lens flares. but there's a limit. The Indy movies all have em, but there's a limit.
