BioShock

Gore Verbinski is one of those directors who fills his plate with so many projects, that you’re not quite sure which ones, if any of them, will actually go into production. I think right now Verbinski is attached to produce an American remake of The Host , direct a segment of Heavy Metal , a live-action adaptation of the board game Clue , a film about a married guy who spends too much time with an MMORPG , a cowboy drama titled Big Hole, a big screen adaptation of BioShock, and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. So what is Verbinski going to do next?

Variety reports that Verbinski is going head first into the big screen adaptation of the popular video game BioShock which was announced almost a year ago. Verbinski informed producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not be in the director’s chair for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, which is expected to go into production in 2010. At the Walt Disney Presentation in September, it was announced that Johnny Depp was signed on for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, and while it was widely known that Verbinski wasn’t interested in doing another Pirates film, everyone just assumed he would return for one more.

“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,” Verbinski said. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

Aviator screenwriter John Logan penned the script. Logan’s filmography also includes Any Given Sunday, Gladiator, The Last Samurai and Sweeney Todd. Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the film. It is believed to be the biggest video game-to-movie deal since the infamous aborted Halo movie deal between Universal and Fox, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%. The BioShock deal is structured in a way ensuring the movie won’t end up in turnaround.

Since it’s release in August, Hollywood has eyeing a big screen adaptation of this popular first-person shooter. Praised for its morality-based storyline, immersive environment and Ayn Rand-inspired dystopian setting, the game has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and ranks as the thirteenth best video game on Game Rankings. Set in an alternative history 1960, BioShock follows the story of a plane crash survivor named Jack, who must explore the underwater Objectivist-dystopian city of Rapture, and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it. Jack is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he’d thought.

Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro has praised the game:

“I love BIOSHOCK from a design point of view,” said del Toro. “The BIOSHOCK universe is indeed wonderful.”

The visuals are certainly cinematic enough for a big budget film, and critics have praised the game for it’s story, something not common in the video game field. Verbinski noted that Rapture’s art deco design and visually arresting characters attracted him to the project.

“I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential,” said Verbinski. “Of all the games I’ve played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.

Interesting. I loved the game. It's probably one of my all-time favorites. I don't know how well it will translate to the screen. It might not have the same impact as the game did as far as the twists and crazy psychological elements are concerned. I hope they bring all that stuff into it and not just make it an action movie. It's too early to tell, but hopefully it'll be decent. I don't think there's a really great film adaptation of a game yet. Maybe Bioshock will be the answer because it was a great game.
  • No way he can do all those projects. I have an inkling some of them are going to get cut. I think the first up will be Clue.
  • Peter you forgot about the full-CG movie that Gore Verbinski was also setting up to be done at ILM

hopefully this would be good though... I just finished playing the game.. and I can say it's a thinkin man's shooter and the one next to last chapter is really amazing sotrywise

  • do want
  • Bioshock is ok but where the hell is the HALO movie!?
  • i believe the technical term is 'dead in the water'.

    BioShock is better anyway.
  • Brad
    Right where it should be.
  • starscream9289
What about that Halo film? Did everyone forget about that Halo film?
  • Brad
I wish I could forget about Halo period. Talk about overrated.
  • The game was freakin' great. My friend gave it to me for free because he was too scared to play it at night. I'm a little scared of what Verbinski might do to it.
  • I would MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH rather have a "BioShock" film than a "Halo" film, and I feel like Verbinski could definitely pull it off.

Mr. Verbinski, would you kindly get started on that ASAP? If I can make one suggestion, hire Garry Schyman to do the score. His score for the game is easily one of the best video game scores I've heard. It's beautiful, haunting, unnerving... Incredible.
  • Why hasnt Bio Shock been made yet.
  • I'm not sure there needs to be a film of Bioshock. The game itself is fantastic. I loved the twist in it which hit me harder because I (the character I was playing) was involved.

Those Big Daddys are iconic though. I can see the teaser trailer in my head already. The sound of that thing approaching. Shivers down the spine. Hope they don't make it PG13 though. Which they will.
  • This game is pretty wicked, and I've been waiting for it to get pushed into film; so hell yes.
  • Big Daddy
what an amazingly-great game, from the visual aspects right down to it's well thought-out story line. playing the game you wish it be a movie that you could just sit back and enjoy the sights of the once thriving utopia, Rapture. It's going to be a huge risk to bring this game to life on a big screen, but I have much faith in Verbinski. I can't wait to see a trailer for this sometime in the future.
  • Bioshock is Citizen Kane of videogames. very anticipating!
  • i like that.
  • I wouldn't say that. It is, however, a testament to videogames' legitimacy as an art form.
  • I really need play this game, have heard nothing but good things about it. Also, who should do Pirates 4? Oh, who am I kidding, I am the only one here who probably at least cares about this film. Lastly, Del Toro should do Bioshock instead. I don't think he has filled up 2019 yet.
  • You're not the only one. :) I still can't wait for Pirates 4. Honestly, I think we should have someone who can offer something new to Pirates. I dunno what, but yeah. Also, I was sort of hoping Del Toro would do Bioshock as well..
  • I love the POTC series too. I hate to see Verbinski walking away from the franchise. Hopefully they will get a solid director for the next one. With Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, I don't think that there any way that they can go wrong.

BioShock is an amazing game and I hope that they break the videogame-to-movie curse on this one. Maybe that will resurrect interest in the Halo movie and they might get off their asses and finally make a Metal Gear Solid movie.
  • I think its how the 2nd one is coming out soon.
  • I think this movie could have a cool City of Lost Children feel but with the horror/suspense elements amped up.
  • Good he needs to branch off from the Pirate films.
  • dlb
to my knowledge, this film is already in principal photography
  • I have never played the game but I have heard great things, and I would honestly rather see him take on something new than another POTC film. He's a great director and I look forward to his new projects.
  • Del Toro could bring this to life. The writer seems to know his craft, then maybe this could be epic, no mater the director. But I'm really happy for not seeing any other pirates movie.
  • tom
Truth: vidya game movies are always crap.
  • Awesome. a potentially awesome video game movie. Not directed by uwe boll, awesome. not directed by brett ratner or the guy who did 10,000 bc. doubly awesome. Verbinsky should be able to handle it, I sure hope so, because it has potential to be great.
  • This is a Rapture reminder.
  • Gore, would you kindly make a BioShock movie that is good like the first Pirates movie and not suck like the 2 sequels?
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'm glad for him to do anything outside of the PotC films. Time for something new, whatever it may be.

Bioshock certainly has a lot of cool designs. It's a great starting point. I don't see why the next batch of game-influenced/based films has to continue the cliche of being crap. Perhaps, they can flesh out a story that isn't married to the game, but involves some of the ideas.

Incidentally, the Call of Duty film will never be bettered - Band of Brothers.

[I know, I know....but it's fun (well, geek fun anyway) to tell someone about Band of Brothers if they don't know that it came before CoD. ] :)
  • This will not end well.
  • Whiskey
Wait a minute, why the hell are they remaking The Host?!
  • BigLou
Let's all remember that they made a movie about DOOM which has very little plot. Bioshock has a lot more potential.
  • Charming
Verbinski probabbly made a lot of stupid mistakes but this is the biggest. Bioshock is the most overrated, overhyped game ever released. It's like a shitty attempt to rip-off Half-Life (which by far is way ahead of Bioshock). And besides good video games and good movies are completely different things. In Bioshock you get a few cutscenes and the rest is BANG and BOOM. A movie however, is not so simplistic to make, it requires deep thought, and considering what Verbinski did with Pirates 3, he has no chance of converting it into a good movie. He ain't Spielberg (who would probably also fail). And besides Pirates already has almost a cult following. Bioshock might get a few views and then get thrown into a dustbin.
  • hakar-g
I am sick to death of the hate with the Pirates Sequels. All of them were great films. Like you said they've become cult classics. All three fantastically charming films.

I just wish he'd do a story behind the mysterious relationship between Cutler Becket and Jack Sparrow. But Rob Marshall although he's good (at musicals) is a dumb choice for POTC 4. Someone please get Verbinski back.
