full metal panic

Our friends at FirstShowing report that Mandalay have picked up the rights to develop a big-screen live action adaptation of the version of the Japanese manga/anime series Full Metal Panic. I haven’t heard of the series before tonight, but apparently it tells the story of a member of the covert anti-terrorist mercenary group who is tasked with protecting a Japanese high school girl with mystical powers. If the one-sentence log-line doesn’t immediately grab you, chances are you’ll be completely turned off by the fact that High School Musical Zac Efron is interested in starring in the project. I know I was.

Hollywood’s attempts to translate anime into live-action American feature films have resulted in some spectacular failures - Fist of the North Star, Guyver, Speed Racer, and most recently Dragonball. Does this mean that the live-action American anime adaptation is doomed? Not necessarily. It just means that it isn’t easy to execute.

Usually Hollywood studios greenlight adaptations in hopes that either the brand name will carry over to box office profits or that the story and characters, which were successful in another medium, might be easily translated to the big screen. The reason to purchase a property is to take away some of the heavy lifting. But with an Anime adaptation in America, the brand name recognition doesn’t equal big box office dollars. Speed Racer is probably the most recognizable anime in the United States, and fared horribly at the box office.

But like anything else, it’s not about where the source material came from or the genre, it’s about the story and how it’s treated. If the studio can’t treat an adaptation seriously, how is the potential American audience?

Upcoming American live-action anime adaptations in various stages of development include Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, The Last Airbender (which some could rightfully argue isn’t a proper anime), Voltron, Ninja Scroll and Robotech. And at least four of the previously mentioned seven movies have a real potential to be huge if they were treated right. We live in a day and age when movie studios are greenlighting films based on newspaper articles and Stretch Armstrong. In the next few years I’m sure we’ll see even more announcements, and more greenlights.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Robotech finally take off after a couple years of stalling. If anything, Transformers proved that America is interested in seeing big giant robots on the big screen. And hopefully films like GI Joe and Robosapien will disprove the ridiculous theory that American audiences want to see big screen adaptations made out of their childhood toys.

I can see this working out IF they do it right.

First of all, I am a huge fan of this series and I love novels and anime (haven't read too much of the manga), but I have to say that whenever it is adapted in America be it through voice acting or the big screen I am usually disappointed. But that's not to say that all English dubs/ American adaptations are total flops (the English dub for Full Metal Panic for example, was exceptional) and I do believe that this has real potential. That being said, there are a few things the people working on this movie will have to look out for or they're going to completely botch it.

The things I would recommend are 1.) stick to the original storyline as much as possible in all ways, shapes and forms 2.) Keep the characters in character 3.) Know the characters and get actors who can play the role in both their acting and physical characteristics 4.) DO NOT just higher popular actors solely because they are popular actors.

If they're going to do this (which obviously they are) they need to stick to the storyline or they will have a lot of angry or at the very least, disappointed fans. That aside, as someone has mentioned before, the storyline is solid. There's no need to deviate from it. I can almost guarantee that if you stick with the plot as is you'll walk away with a pretty penny because everything about this story is already set. I understand that the film can't exceed a certain amount of time and you have creative license but as much as possible, stick with what you already have and work with it. Don't just change things for the sake of doing so. (An example of this being -though I'm not sure if this was the same group working on it, you can still learn from the epic fail - the Dragonball movie. They already had a great plot, characters and a setting to work with and yet they made major and unnecessary changes that ticked a lot of people off and ruined the original story). Stay true to the plot, stay true to the setting, stay true to the characters and what makes them who they are.

Kaname, Sosuke, Kurz, Mao, Tessa, Kalinin, Mardukas, even Gauron are all great as is. Please keep them in character. A lot of the interesting events in this series play on their character traits and personalities and the decisions they make because of them. For example, a lot of the comedy aspects are the result of Sosuke's 24/7 war mentality and (sometimes) Kurz's perverseness.

Finally, one of the most important aspects: the acting. For the sake of not boring people to death PLEASE use actors who can play the role. I'm not talking "hey, this guy was really believable in that one gushy romantic comedy where he played the well-rounded boy next door, so let's put him in our movie -that has romantic and humorous aspects, but mainly revolves around anti-terrorism and war- as a highly-trained mercenary!" I know that there are auditions involved in casting and maybe the acting can be pulled off, but it's a major turn-off if we can't stop thinking about another role in another movie an actor you cast has played. It's also a major turn-off when you don't stick with actors that resemble (if only a little) the characters physically. The make-up can only take you so far (as with the Dragonball movie) so use people with similar physical traits.

Kurz Weber, for example, is described as having blonde hair, blue eyes, and of German ethnicity. He loves the ladies, has somewhat of a potty-mouth, but is overall a fun character. Not too hard to find someone to play this role, but other characters like Melissa Mao (to add to this example) need to be cast correctly as well. Mao is described as being in her late-twenties and of Chinese ethnicity. I'm not trying to make this a racial thing, believe me. I'm just saying that you need to stay true to the characters all the way around or its not as believeable and takes away from the original story. Mithril is not directly affiliated (though sometimes it works with) with any one country and it is said in the novels that the people on board the Tuatha de Danaan are all of various races with different ethnic backgrounds. If you have a bunch of soldiers that look like they're from America with American "accents" that's not going to be very believable and people may think that Mithril as well as the plot is centered around the USA.

I am a huge fan of the series and I really want this to work out. I'm not one of the haters who will automatically put it down but I do admit to having doubts as to whether this will be successfully executed. I gave it some thought and if you take into consideration the things I have said, I believe this can be a success.

Sosuke is Japanese and though I would prefer that you stay true to who these characters are all the way around, I'd say that this is excusable. However, I'm assuming that Zac is being considered for Sosuke and I don't want to think of High School Musical or 17 Again whenever I see him on screen (generally, I think having popular American actors in the movie will take people out of the story ). Sosuke doesn't have Zac's baby-face or pretty boy appeal, though I must say that other than that, physically je is well fit for the role. If he can pull of Sosuke's military-mentality, and stony, expressionless face, then maybe this could work.

americans should stop remaking anime's into live action!!! dragon ball sucks!! and so will the others. they don't have the japanese essentials to remake famous titles like these. they're just humiliating the japanese for all their hard work and they're also humiliating themselves. and it's a total waste of money. full metal panic is one of my favorites; so please leave it alone!!!
  • pkksagg hdsh;shgjs;a
kurz and melissa are american. tessa is german, and kaname sosuke are japanese.
  • Name
hell id be happy of it went strait to dvd... i neeed more FMP

I LOVE FULL METAL PANIC SO MUCH AND I KNOW THIS MOVIE WILL SUCK BECAUSE OF ZAC!!!
  • yopoppop
full metal panic is AMAZING. I'm really excited to see how the movie turns out. Zac Efron will RUIN the movie if he plays Sousuke Sagara. He's a great actor but he just doesnt fit the military action hero role. As for Chidori and Tessa... they better get some hot actresses.
  • lagen
I don't think Zac Efron could star as Sagara. His looks doesn't match anime style.
  • danny
lol i wanna play as souske sagara cause i look just like him hair, skin tone, and i was in the army i bet i can pull it off..lol as for zack? nogo :/ but its not up to me . but as a die hard fan of FMP my opinion is for them to find a better cast and i beg for them to continue the anime cause i was really upset when they stopped creating it...
  • rene
Im waiting for this movie, i think that other movies dont have the result expected because the anime, you know supernatural power is something that is not easy to project but full metal panic is about robots and fighting techniques so i think it could be a excelent movie, just dont let the movie be Full Metal Musical jaja i expect other actor as the protagonist.
  • cneajna01
Lol...you really want Hollywood to butcher another awesome anime series??
  • Sugoi-Otaku
    >___________________>

    There gonna mess this up arent they? ;______________;

I don't want them to mess up cowboy bebop or FMP. THEY WILL. They'll americanise it and butcher it till theres nothing funny and awesome left.

Though i would be curious as to where they'regonna find anyone awesome enough to play Spike.
  • cneajna01
Well...as far as I know...it's already been pretty well decided that Keanu Reeves is going to playing Spike. O.O Yeeeeahhh.....not cool. I don't have anything personal against Keanu...and he has played in some good movies...but he's really not that great of an actor. He acts the same in every film that he's ever been in...with the exception of Bill and Ted..which isn't saying a whole lot...lol. From what I read...Keanu is a fan of Cowboy Bebop and that's one of the reasons he wants the part...so HOPEFULLY he can be true to the part and pull it off.

I don't think it would really be that hard to make a good FMP movie if Hollywood actually took the time to do some research on the story. I mean, the majority of the anime is high school life. And what isn't high school life, is mechas....which hell...if they can do Transformers...mecha's shouldn't be that much of a stretch...lol. The only things that I think could be a problem is the humor of FMP. Most of it is over the top, slapstick humor....which usually involves Sousuke bringing a weapon to school and resulting in blowing sh*t up. And we all know how taboo it is in American society to show someone bringing weapons to school. But I don't know...we'll see how it goes. And if it sucks...I just won't watch it. In the mean time I'll just pray that something good could possibly come of this...lol.
  • Tezs
Thanks for correcting me about Kurz' and Tessa's nationality.I remembered lateron Kurz was German when i rewatched FMP 1 sub(not the dub)which i hadn't rewatched in almost 2 years as until recently i had gotten into the bad habit of watching mostly dubs on the U.S. versions of series i own on dvd.Meh, memory is starting to go.Lol!

I was reading this morning that Kurokami also had it's movies rights purchased as well.I just started watching the subs to that anime as it just finished up not long ago.It sure isn't taking Hollywood long to start snapping up all of the Japanese anime properties.

Only goes to show that the American studios are completely out of new and fresh ideas to turn into motion pictures.Maybe they ought to start wooing some of the native Asian movie makers to come up with some new and interesting stuff for western audiences to spend their movie going/buying cash on.I'd go as far as to guarantee what they would come up with would be ALOT better than we've had in a long,LONG time(and likely cost alot less money to produce as well).
  • cneajna01
LOL...no problem. I actually haven't seen FMP subbed yet...yeah..I'm a dub fan...lol. But Full Metal Panic is my favorite anime of all time, so I Wiki'ed the sh*t out of it...lol. Kurokami huh? Haven't seen that one yet...I'll have to check it out. I agree completely about Hollywood snatching up all the anime titles. They've obviously ran out of ideas...and know that anime has a large fanbase that they think they can attract if they make live action films. Which everyone knows is bullsh*t, cause no hardcore Otaku wants to spend the money to go watch some westernized, butchered version of their favorite anime. More likely to try to boycott it then anything else. Hopefully though...HOPEFULLY...they can manage to make at least one or two awesome films out of it. It's not entirely impossible...they've managed to make some decent live action films based off of American comics. Of course those are usually butchered to hell too...but at least they make it their own. I guess we'll see though. I really hope they don't completely maim FMP, but if they do....I'll still love the anime just the same and won't support the movie.
  • Tezs
I agree.Alot of people feel that if don't support the movie, then you aren't supporting anime in general(which is a load of bull).Hollywood could care
less where they hijack the idea from. All they care about is Japanese Anime and manga are chock full of fresh and original material.Since western screen writers can't seem to come up with anything new and original in the last 10 years, the studios are going east, which is good and bad.Good in the fact that alot of awesome titles most people would never hear of will get some exposure in the west, bad in the fact that the chances of those properties bearing more than a little semblance to their source material after western producer/director/scriptwtriters get through with them, are extremely low.

I remember how disappointed i was when Warner Brothers 'Americanized" HellBlazer(they turned the main character John Constantne from a blonde haired, rough, and tough chain smoking Brit with a really dark sense of humor(he was supposed to bear a ressemblance to Sting) to a dark haired/baby faced American that was soft spoken when compared to his comic book alter ego. This is how i've also felt after any anime based movie i've ever seen and unfortunately it isn't likely to change soon.
  • Tezs
Wouldn't suprize me is the tried changing the nationality of Kaname' as well.I'd even bet Efron's slutty gf would want the part.If the Wonder who they have in mind to play Melissa,Kurt, and Tessa(who would have to be Chinese,American, and Italian..in that order, if they stuck to FMP's actual character nationalities which were important to the story as they made up the international crew of Mithril on board the Tuatha De Danaan.

Sign...they better not even think about messing with Bonta-Kun..grrrrrrrrrrr!
  • cneajna01
Tessa's American and Kurz is of German decent. But yeah...I'm sure they will probably make everyone American, if they change Sousuke's nationality. After all...it is being made in Hollywood. Expecting them to actually put the thought into creating a movie true to the original story is giving them to much credit. And Bonta-Kun....well they will probably leave that out completely. Hopefully...I don't see how that would work...lol.

Full Metal Panic was the very first anime that i bought, and so i’m very attached to the series. I have no interest in Zack because he has not been in any top movie’s yet (or any movies for that matter). I really dont call the High School Musical things movies. The only movie he is really working on is “17 Again” which does not interest me in the least, but then again they have not made it official to anything yet so i guess we just wait and see.

As for the rest of the movie goes with the giant Mech Robots, they could do that I mean look what they did with Transformers, It could happen. There still the question of who they could get to play the other characters like Kaname, Tesse, and every one else.

i just hope if they go for it They better take there time and get it right

First Speed Racer and Dragonball, now Cowboy Bebop, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Monster, Evangelion, Full Metal Panic, and god knows what else

Fucking hell, these next few years are going to be painful.
  • cneajna01
    Agreed!
  • What's with all the remakes is Hollywood losing creativity?
  • Wonder who will play what
  • to the general moviegoing public it's unknown...since it's going to be made for us and not just diehard fans...
  • To the general movie going public every animated show besides pokemon is unknown. What's your point? As the article states, if they are counting on the name of an animated property to sell tickets they are shit out of luck.
  • umm not really Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jetsons, Flinstones, Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy...all have larger followings than most animes....they are far from unknown...when most of these anime "TV" series are all knock-offs of each other.. people outside the anime fanbase can't really care about the properties...I have to say shows like Evangelion have a massive international following compared to say Full Metal Panic or Robotech...I just find it distrubing to see such a massive gamble by studios developing lesser known Anime properties when the well known ones haven't even been shown to be successful yet....

Akira, NInja Scroll, Battle Angel and Ghost In The Shell are very far from even put into production and they're the best known anime properties...it would be like Marvel risking money on Iron Man and releasing it before the success with X-Men and Spider-Man....Marvel actually did that and we have the notoriously awful Captain America and Punisher original movies...I doubt this will get any solid finacing needed to have a decent action movie

with someone like Zac Efron being mentioned expect Dinsey to either pick it up or develop it into a live-action television series...
  • What your saying is true. Those titles you listed are vastly superior to Full Metal Panic in both quality and popularity. But doesn't it really matter when the percentage of people who watch anime is so small? That's like saying the Earth is bigger than the moon in comparison to the Sun. Sure it's bigger, but compared to the sun, which represents the total of the movie going public, it really doesn't matter which is bigger.

Also the anime titles you listen are not meant for kids. Probably why studios have been staying so far away from them seeing as how anime is still widely considered to be a medium exclusively for kids.
  • Vlad
With all the respect... ALWAYS that you want to do a movie from an anime or video-game the result is a big sh**., examples??? Dragon Ball, Mortal Combat, Street Fighter, etc!!! And the most horrible of all of this is that probably that guy of highschool musical would be Sagara :@!!! This movie will suck with american direction/acting...

Excuse me while I go shoot several people in the face.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jonhny Yong Bosch playing Sousuke if need be, but even that would be better than another actor of a completely different race/origin of the actual property's main character. It's an insult to the REAL fans of FMP to suggest Zack Efron would even be though of to play Sosuke. The guy is a talentless twit and if it wasn't for his gf's famous naked pics, he and she would long since be forgotten of, even by the aging High School Musical fans.

There's a good reason why we won't see a Full Metal Alchemist movie in the near future if at all.Bet this will suprize a few of you.

Studio Bones just started airring the FMA anime remake of the first Full Metal Alchemist anime series in Japan(Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood). It IS a more faithful adaptation of the actual manga which itself has not finished production/come to an ending yet.FMP:Brotherhood will follow the actual flow of the manga and not have ANY filler content in the new anime series and will stick to only what happens in the manga. The manga is set to finish just about the same time that the new anime will be finishing it's run, sometime next fall. The first episode of FMP:Brotherhood just airred on Japanese tv this past weekend and was EXCELLENT.As a matter of fact, the new anime will come out on Japanese Bluray(same territory as North American Bluray, therefore playable on NA bluray players as well as Japanese)early this fall.
  • Tezs
They are KILLING this possible flick INSTANTLY by associating the effeminate Zack Efron with it in ANY way. There is no way in hell or high Heaven that Zack Efron is even remotely qualified, talented enough,or even the right type of actor to play Sousuke.I suppose the next thig will be his whore of a girlfriend, the talentless Vanessa Hugens to play Kaname.I SERIOUSLY hope they leave the FMP franchise alone. There's noway it can be "Americanized/Hollywoodized" and be a successful flick.Want proof?Look at the last two anime Hollywood adptions...DOA was a straight to video instantly forgotten nightmare and the upcoming Dragonball is supposed to be so bad the creators of the anime don't even want their names associated with it.
  • FMP is fine, but were is the Fullmetal Alchemist movie!?
  • dagreenman18
Extremely cautiously optimistic. i love the show and it's comedy spin off, so im happy to see it get attention. but if Zach Efferon stars , then it's dead to me.
  • Its definitely possible its just that Hollywood hasn't treated the source material of these anime adaptations properly (Take a look at the disaster that is Dragonball:Evolution for example).

But hopefully someone will get it right. Leonardo DiCaprio is trying his hardest to stay along the lines of both Ninja Scrolls source material as well as Akira by hiring actors from Japan (an article was released yesterday on ANN about DiCaprio casting in Japan).

I'm still giving these upcoming anime adaptations the benefit of the doubt. So many anime's have wonderful and thought provoking stories (some have amazing action to top things off) that would make for a cinematic delight to watch on the big screen but we have yet to see that.

Hopefully DiCaprio pulls it off with Ninja Scroll or Akria. Spielberg is producing Ghost in the Shell, so that all of these projects will be interesting to follow.
  • I agree with you completely. In fact, I've always thought that Full Metal Alchemist would make for an amazing movie experience if it was done properly.
  • I think pretty much all of the humor in Full Metal Panic is way too weird to translate well. And I had no idea there was a Fist of the North Star movie. I kind of want to see it now.

    Speed Racer a "spectacular failure"??

I'm tired of seeing people shit talk this movie just because it bombed at the box office. People are Fucking idiots, I don't care if one person or a billion people pay for a movie, doesn't change how great it is
Speed Racer was one of the funnest movies I saw in the theater that year. Candy for the eyes and imagination, and best movie they've done since The Matrix
  • REAL6
I dont now why people keep saying Speed Racer sucked. It was pretty good. IMAX it was crazy!!!

I bet there has to be at least one lone anime geek willing to give his life and tell us everything about anime and how Hollywood will bastardize it.

There is so many anime adaptations. And this seems to be Americanized from the start with the main characters (as both characters are Japanese, both multi-lingual) though a production like this has the potential to have an awesome international cast... I'm holding judgement; I've been disappointed too many times.
  • Infrafan
Oh, and I'd like to add anime is just another facet that needs to be correctly adapted like books and video games. It boils down to great writing, great acting, and great direction, and even then that doesn't guarantee a successful project.
  • Greggory Basore
The Last Airbender (which some could rightfully argue isn’t a proper anime)

Um... the last time a I caught a clip it seemed like it was animated hence it's anime. I know a lot of people get hung up on this elitist bullshit that "it's got to be from Japan" or "It's got to be of a certain style" before something can be considered "truly" anime. The fact is that anime is a shortening of the japanese word animeshon which translates into english as "animation".

In japan that word which american geeks try to claim is only applied in a small and specific way is used to include everything from Pokemon, to donald duck, to Dragon Ball Z to pop eye and beyond. Anime is a medium an further it's the same medium used in Asia, Europe, The Americas and the rest of the world. It's just called by different names in different places.

Onto the main subject. I agree that American live action movies based on asian cartoons haven't been done well. The problem to me is two fold. One is that it's a matter of adapting something from another media (I imagine some might argue but I feel that animation and live action are inherently different media). More often than not Hollywood seems to flub it when it comes to adapting from another media. With novels movie versions get it right like half the time and that seems to be really good for them. TV shows made into movies rarely ever work out that well (Good examples I can think of off the top of my head... The Addams Family [just the first one] bad examples... too numerous to mention) and so far videogames haven't yielded even one worth while adaptation. Hell if you think about it Hollywood only started getting comic books right more often than not a decade ago. Sure there were rare exceptions back in the day (the first Superman movie and the first two Batman movies for example) but by and large they flubbed it. It's only been since Blade in 1998 that hollywood started building a track record of getting things right with comic book adaptations. Even now a days there's still misfires in the accuracy department like Wanted. Cartoons are just another medium that hollywood has trouble with. Look at Pop Eye, Scooby Doo, and Aeon Flux.

By the way in hollywood's defense it should be noted that American studios aren't the only ones who suck at adapting cartoons/animation/anime into live action. There've been some asian made suck fest that were based on awesome cartoons. Guyver comes to mind

The other hurdle working against adaptations of movies like Dragon Ball and Akira is the fact that it's americanizations. As a general rule anytime hollywood attempts to give us "the american version" of anything we're in for a crapfest. Okay maybe not all the time, but definitely three quarters of the time. American studios seem hell bent on taking something smart and sophisticated from another country, and remaking it in such a manner as to eliminate everything smart and sophisticated that brought it to their attention in the first place for the sake of dumbing things down for their audience. An american version of Akira or Ghost in the Shell is just as bad an idea in live action or animation as an americanized Old Boy or Let the Right One in. No matter how much potential there is to make something beautiful we'll most likely get something watered down and awful.

What I'd really like to see is a foreign remake of an american movie. Can anyone recommend anything?

The next batch of American adaptation of anime flicks are the really good ones, I hope they don't screw that up. And where the hell is my Evangelion movie??

Evangelion is actually in the works as we speak. Not sure they've started actually filming yet...but I know that it's being adapted to live action as well.
  • Hmmm, alright let's see here... what's this movie about? Let's try to piece it together from what we know. Let's see, there's the name. We know the name. It's called Full Metal Panic... and it's an anime. So, the Full Metal part of the name... implies some sort of metal... metal usage... metallic... mechanized metallic man... giant robot! Okay, probably some sort of giant mecha robot thingy.

And the Panic part of the name... what does the panic mean? Panic because of... some sort of inner turmoil? Panic because of... inner turmoil... at being... an effeminate man? Some sort of androgynous effeminate looking guy. And who tends to panic? Perhaps a female... of... youth? Female youths tend to panic. And... let's see, female youths go to... school. Schoolgirls. Schoolgirls in uniforms.

Alright, I think I've pieced this mystery together.

Lighten up, quite being a D.. FMP is a wicked good and wicked entertaining series, your not being clever, your not being funny.. Any movie fan knows that you don't just a movie buy its title anyways... Momento sounds like a shatty rip of a minty and/or fruity candy. Or Brick, sounds like you can be taking a crap but they are two of the best movies that anybody has seen...
Lay off lay the F-bomb off of stuff you don't know about their Chief Triangle Fight...
Sounds like your venting out your Chud anyways... try checking something out before you make fun of it...
    Cheers!
