snyder

While appearing at ShoWest to accept the 2009 Director of the Year Award, Zack Snyder responded to questions about the disappointing box office of Watchmen and how this might effect the prospects of the Director’s Cut being released theatrically.

“Thing thing about Watchmen is it’s a lot of craziness. It’s a long movie, it’s rated R.” “Everyone is talking about Monsters vs. Aliens, which is a cool movie, comes out and makes like $58 million and everyone is like, ‘Oh my god, it’s the hugest hit ever!’ And then a R-rated movie, two and a half hours long with superheroes raping each other makes $55 million dollars and every-one’s like ‘WHAT?’ How is that possible? I’m pretty happy with the movie”

And Snyder’s argument is a convincing one until you consider the fact that Watchmen dropped 68% in its second week of release, and a month in has only earned $104 million. I’m sure Monsters vs. Aliens will probably have much longer legs, and is expected to end it’s first 10-days of release with over $106 million. But how does this effect the discussed possible limited theatrical release of the director’s cut of Watchmen?

“We’re super proud of the movie, the director’s cut is coming soon. So in July you’ll get to see more Watchmen. If you didn’t have enough in two hours and forty minutes you’ll have three hours and ten minutes, and I think there is three hours and thirty minutes coming so they’ll be a lot more Watchmen to come, regardless of how people feel about it.”

But will we see the three hour and ten minute cut of the film on the big screen?

“I think that’s still happening. I think they’re still going to do a limited run of it, or they’re still talking about it anyway.”

I still think it would be smart for Warner Bros to run the director’s cut in theaters in some of the major cities as it’s sure to attract at least the hardcore fans of the comic and or film.

  • I'd be down for watching the director's cut up on the big screen. But I'd be happy with only a DVD release.. just glad we get to see it at all.
  • jesse
wonder what great story he'll add dumb shit to next?
  • JESSE_NOT_A_FAN
    kill yourself
  • I'd personally watch it.. since (I'm afraid to say) I have not watched Watchmen on big screen yet (or any screen, also)
  • I loved it and looking forward to the Director's Cut :D
  • Theater or DVD, i'm definitely going to watch it.
  • Goobity
It was a great deal of fun to finally see in motion, wasn't it?
I'm in for a longer cut, as well.
  • XCVBN
I'm exited to see the director's cut... But I don't live in New York or LA so I'm not quite sure if it makes a diffrence for me weather or not it gets a theatrical release.
  • of course it's done only 104 mil - it wasn't very good.
  • My ass is in the seat if so.
  • freemachine
I think they should release the directors cut at the very end of summer, when all the shitty films come out and people are jonesing from something good. I bet they'd have little difficulty filling up theaters with that plan.
  • 2009 director of the year? Is the number one criteria making terrible movies that only succeed on the backs of what they are adapting.
  • Well played sir, now prepare to get thumbed down by watchmen fanboys.
  • It's Grizzly Adams!
  • I dont really feel the need to watch the movie again. I might catch the directors cut on DVD out of sheer curiosity and end up regreting it after though...
  • And so it begins. Don't worry I get thumbs down all the time for logical comments. Especially when I claim Batman Begins is superior to Dark Knight.

Thing is I am currently a university film student and could write an essay backing up everything I say here. Most of the people that will vote me down couldn't rebuttal their way out of a barrel.
  • I'm a film student at a university and I know for a fact that that doesn't account for jack shit as I'm sure you know too, by how many dumbass people sign up for film school despite being completely dumbass.

With that said, I agree with your comments. Just don't use the fact that an undergrad in the easiest major next to English supports your claims.
  • Dag, Yo
I resent this as my BA is in English. To be fair, the Liberal Studies are all pretty even when it comes to level of difficulty. Although, my chemistry, math, and engineering classes weren't too difficult either. You just have to study.

BUT, I do hate when people say, "I was/am a (blank) major" to back up their claims. It is complete BS.
  • Goobity
'Thing is I am currently a university film student and could write an essay backing up everything I say here.'

Go for it. I bet you can't. You probably can't even name ten 'film school students' who went on to be successful in the industry.
    Hint: There aren't that many.
  • I will, send me your email through the intensedebate messaging system and I'll do the essay after I'm done exams in april.

And just off the top of my head,

Coppola, Scorcesse, Aronofsky. I could probably name more if i felt like researching.
  • WOAH A UNIVERSITY FILM STUDENT!
watch out this guy knows his stuff
since i'm not a UNIVERSITY FILM STUDENT mine and everyone's opinion is clearly rendered useless.

"and so it begins" you sound so full of yourself, like you're sighing as you write that statement and thinking to yourself, "why do i have to be on this comment section with all these brainless paul blart loving morons?"
  • Note the part where I talk about the AVERAGE student in comparison to the AVERAGE internet poster. There are definitely people here that are better than a lot of people in my class.

"and so it begins" was in referrals to the inevitable downvotes i was going to get for criticizing snyder

Looks like I've managed to kill any semblance of a reputation here...

Looks like I've managed to kill any semblance of a reputation here... If I thought all you commenters (especially the prolific ones) were "brainless paul blart loving morons" I wouldn't comment here. Truth is I like most of the people that comment here.
  • Zach Synder tried his hardest but too many factors were working agaisnt him. The movie was a valiant effort though and I give him credit for that.
  • I agree with you because he was working against all odds when making Watchmen. Half the fans of the book wanted this made into a film, the other half didn't want it made into a film. Everyone had their opinion about it and it still made some money so far. if you go back and listen to what Kevin Smith had to say about the Watchmen film a few weeks back on the /Filmcast, you will hear him talking about all the factors that were against Snyder making this film.
  • I would agree completely. There are some clueless people in my classes. Yet I would still argue than an AVERAGE film student will be able to out argue an AVERAGE internet commenter.

Even at the lower end of quality of these two groups the student must have picked up a little something at the very least along the way.
  • freemachine
Ha-ha, the red-eye makes Snyder look possessed.
  • The fact that you misspelled Scorsese kind of undermines all of your points.
  • Really? Pretty sad to insult someone because they misspell a last name.
  • Sorry, I misspelled something. Yet that really isn't a point breaking condition is it? It's not like i misspelled the word cat.
  • All the General Studies Liberal Arts with emphasis in ______ majors say hooooooooooooooo! (You have now found the easiest major. An adviser looks at all the classes you took and makes a degree out of it. I don't recommend it. Sorry mom and dad :'(.
  • Or I could study something that I don't want to do...
  • I loved the movie, so bring on more.
  • Make it a digital only deal. Customers complaining about a theater not having digital is just another reason to convert.
  • whether or not a movie is good rarely has much to do with box office gross.
  • If they would show the movie around the midwest in Imax, I would possibly go. Watchmen is a great movie and deserves to make more money but then again, it was rated R. That's the only argument I have about it failing to achieve more success. I bet the DVD sales will be very good whenever it comes out.
  • Spooner St.
release the Director's cut..but put it on DVD..forget the theater.
  • Andrew
Totally getting the Blu-Ray day one for the Director's Cut. Damn I'd love to see it in the theater, too...

Still, I think the backlash that led to such heavy dropoffs in subsequent weekends was that the fans rushed to it early and the non-believers were sold an action movie but instead got something far deeper, more cold and intellectual. At least in TDK's marketing they made it clear how conflicted Bruce Wayne/Batman was. I think that was a small-yet-deadly oversight that should've been made clear, that these characters have deep inner conflicts. That way people would be more likely to root for one or several characters.
  • Fir3Wolf
I don't care what other people thing, I personally really enjoyed this movie especially being a big fan of the comic. I've seen the movie twice and if they put the directors cut back in theaters, hell I'll go see it again. I just want this movie on Blu-Ray already lol.
  • Oh yeah, bring it on...I will happily see it again in the theater. Loved it. Not much more you can say about it that hasn't been said. I applaud Zach Snyder.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Watchmen is not a good film. I have no problem telling people to pick up the book and skip this meandering mess of a film entirely. Another 40 minutes? I could barely sit through the first 2 hours without checking my watch a few times.

Listen, I love Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but I can fully accept and see how it fails as a film for many people. Fans of this Watchman film just need to accept that Snyder's film is not very good... and they love it anyway. I guess a little more time needs to pass.
  • Hopefully there is a proportional amount of Malin Ackerman breast in the new cut
  • Hopefully there is a proportional amount of Malin Ackerman breast in the new 3 hour 10 minute cut

I don't know if an extra half hour will be enough to save it. After the initially overwhelming disappointment - which I'm getting used to from Snyder's films. He has a much greater talent for choosing projects than for seeing them through - Terry Gilliam's reasons for backing out started to make sense to me. A single film is just not enough to do Watchmen justice without serious editing, which nobody was brave enough to do. Snyder tried to have it both ways, producing a film both far too long and much too short, which skates over its subject matter without ever breaking the surface.
  • Bugs
Know how people say "I can't wait!"?
Well, I can wait. Not because 'Watchmen' wasn't fantastic. It was. It was great.
In fact, I think Snyder and the others did such a great job, with the 'Under the Hood" part too, that I KNOW what's missing. What's missing in the movie can be figured out pretty quick. More Nite Owl I, more Laurie/Comedian, more Rorshack/shrink, heck, just read the book, you know what I'm sayin.
The wait can be savored. Really liked the ending. Made more sense. Better explained Dr M's departure.
But I should've liked the good Doctor to climb the walls and have a final talk with Ozzy before leaving, insteada leavin directly from outside. The line "Nothing ever ends" woulda sounded more ominous coming out've HIS mouth than Malin Ackerman's. My opinion. Little thing amongst few others. Certainly not enough to diminish Snyder's fantastic achievement. Bravo, mate.
    Peace
  • I'm so gonna get the Director's Cut.
  • jason B
amen, i 100% agree with you cap.
  • thefan
I will keep watching this film until I friggin die from it, haha!!
  • So, wait. I loved Watchmen and plan to buy it on DVD, but what will be the final "best" release? I bet on the first DVD release they'll put out a single-disc and two-disc, but somewhere down the line they'll make more editions. Does anyone know if there'll be an ultimate edition and possibly when it comes out because I'm a collector and want the fully-loaded one.
  • It'll be a repeat of Bladerunner. We won't have the "Fuck off" edition until 20 years from now.
