Greg Mottola’s Superbad was a massive hit, grossing well over $100 million domestically on a relatively modest $20 million budget. It hilariously portrayed the alcohol-, drug-, and sex-driven adventures of a group of high schoolers (and a few cops), but its emotional core was unmistakable: The sweet friendship between Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) was what held the film together. Now for his follow-up, Adventureland, Mottola is working off his own script, and has focused his gaze in a slightly different direction: post-adolescent romance. But with fewer dick jokes and more post-college angst, does Adventureland deliver the laughs and/or the emotion that we’ve come to expect?

In summer 1987, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has just graduated from college and is looking forward to a tour of Europe and a bright future at the Columbia Journalism School. Unfortunately, due to some unfortunate occupational changes, his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) find themselves unable to pay for his trip. James is thus forced to take a low-paying job at the local amusement park, Adventureland. While he initially balks at the idea, the colorful characters he meets there, and the co-worker he falls in love with, Em (Kristen Stewart), promise to make it one of the most memorable summers he’s ever had.

It’s hard for me to put into words precisely why I love this film. What I know is that Mottola is thoroughly skilled at capturing the perils of suburban ennui and the excitement that comes from the mundane minutiae of dating. The details of amusement park life are also lovingly rendered. I was left with the feeling that the director not only thoroughly knows his source material, but knows how to bring out the idiosyncrasies of both the situations and the people in a way that’s funny and tender.

It doesn’t hurt that the performances are uniformly excellent. Eisenberg’s James is full of wanderlust, but he still manages to capture the perfect mix of meticulous precision, nervous awkwardness, and plain old sweetness that make him worth rooting for. His performance grounds the film, but each of the other quirky characters also get their moments to shine. Ryan Reynolds is characteristically great in the role of Connell, the kind of creepy, kind of pathetic amusement park repairman. I was also a huge fan of Martin Starr as Joel, who subtly captures the seething sexual frustration that’s always lurking under the surface of his character. And of course, there’s Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, who steal the show as the sheltered couple who run Adventureland.

And then there’s the matter of Kristen Stewart.

The biggest thing that baffles me about Stewart is the massive gulf between her on-screen charisma, and her off-screen persona. Check out this appearance Stewart did on Letterman to promote Twilight, in which she appears to be part-catatonic, part-nervously excited, and part-completely unaware of what is going on around her (Fast forward to around 4:15 to see where Letterman completely rips into an apparently-oblivious Stewart):

Watching this clip (after seeing her in the thoroughly mediocre Twilight), it’s hard to see an actress with a promising career ahead of her, but Stewart is absolutely irresistible in Adventureland as the romantic interest that’s full of self-loathing. Em is a mess, a girl who realizes the emotional havoc her actions are wreaking, yet is simultaneously helpless to stop them. At the same time, Stewart exudes a quiet sexiness and an understated vulnerability such that you can’t help but fall in love with her. In other words, you can totally see why James would subject himself to the things that he does in pursuit of Stewart’s Em.

There’s a lot of other stuff to like about Adventureland, such as its fantastic soundtrack and its 1980s feel and look. But above all, Adventureland is a film about the trails and tribulations of young love. It’s a touching coming-of-age tale that has a heart and soul. And it proves that Greg Mottola doesn’t need Mitch Hurwitz, Judd Apatow, or Seth Rogen to make you laugh.

great review. i agree about Stewart acting strange in her interviews. she's pretty dead from what i've seen in her other interviews.
  • She's like a hair over 18. I doubt that many people her age would have all that much to say on Letterman, they haven't experienced much yet. What is there? High school? Check. Been in a few movies? Check. Haven't had time to do much else because you've been busy attending high school and making movies? Check.
Personally I found myself more attracted to her after that interview. She has this "what's going on?" attitude that's just hot as hell. Combine that with her hair flips and her silly leather jacket-- She's like the perfect girl.
  • Yes, driving to Russia would be difficult if you were to start in London.

She does seem to have something about her, though... however I'm not sure if it's something enigmatic or she's just an idiot. And if it's the former, I can't tell whether that is attractive or just odd.
  • Booga
Yo, there is a tunnel from London to France, right?
  • Yes but it's for trains only. Though there is one train that is like a tunnel ferry where you can have your car put inside a train car and moved across the Channel so technically you could drive from London to the mainland.

However, based on Stewart coming off as an idiot/aloof... I don't think she knows this.
  • wonderful review, David, you've made me more excited for this movie now. i don't see what's up with people's hostility for stewart. she's an actress, not a celebrity, so let's leave it at that.
  • maybe shes just shy or something
  • maybe shes just high or something
  • she is known to rip bowls on her front stoop, google it.
  • Haha. She smoke's in adventure-land also!! (spoiler?)
p.s. I loved the quirky vibe if this film, the dialogue was smart but not too smart for itself. 8/10
  • That's awesome if it's true.
  • sara
maybe she is just boring, something

I expected it to be funnier, but it was more a coming-of-age story, a delightfully mature one that avoided being lame and sappy. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments, it was a nice mix of comedy and romance that males will appreciate. Jesse Eisenberg is such a likeable young man. Kristen Stewart, who I've never liked, surprised me by being a very real and non-cardboard cutout female role. I liked her character's personality a lot, it helps that she's beautiful. She has a lot of talent that she must not use when she's doing Twilight. I found myself invested in her and Eisenberg's rocky relationship, I cared for these kids. Great supporting roles by Bill Hader and Martin Staar aswell, glad Starr's getting some exposure. Wiig and Reynolds didn't do much. It also has a killer soundtrack with mostly Velvet Underground/Lou Reed. I'd say the only things holding it back were the overly long running time and a few too many make-out scenes. But in the end, Mottola's a good storyteller and he still has me thinking about his movie. Not just because I'm writing a review for it, haha.
  • rnl
gotta say, not a fan of her.
I really liked everyone else though.
  • i have to disagree with this review. i felt that this movie was completely based on character development, and when you have all the characters in an unlikeable resolution, it is hard to see their development. the only true jewels of this movie were martin starr and bill hader and kristen wigg. kristen stewart, i have come to the conclusion, is nothing more than a girl used for a role that is in no way challenging. her acting here can be mirrored in twilight, with no change of feeing, body language or voice control. another problem i had with this movie was ryan reynolds... who i felt was extremely miscast. although he provides some humor, his more serious turn was not for the best. being a fan of reynolds i know that he can provide drama (the nines, smokin' aces) and this did not just allow him to do so. the script i felt was trying to provide a dark and sardonic mood, but most of the humor was either provided by starr, or just flung at you and left out to dry. im not sure if my negative feelings towards this film is due to the fact that i walked in with the expectations of comedy and a coming-of-age story, but i left with the feeling that i had seen character development at its mediocre limit.

  • Movie was surprisingly good.
  • I just love the Letterman video.

    "Lets hope its Berlin"

    many lols
  • the whole movie was like one long bummer mixtape...

and somehow i found that to be a good thing.
  • "...Stewart is absolutely irresistible in Adventureland..." I don't believe you. But we'll see.
  • Sure, Kristen Stewart gives very strange and awkward interviews. So what? Just means she's not great at being a publicity whore. To me, that makes her more of a real person. Which of us, in real life, would be thrilled to give an interview to some stranger? It's tedious and boring. I'm sure we'd all rather be off smoking pot on a porch somewhere.

Look at Christian Bale, that dude doesn't give good interviews either. But he's a damn fine actor. I dunno... those two not being amazing in publicity just makes them more normal human beings in my eyes.
  • maybe shes just hogh or something
  • I've always like her as an actress, but she isn't the best at doing publicity which could prove to be a problem if she decides to do more mainstream movies, but if she decides to walk the independent route I think that could really create some interesting performances that can speak for themselves and not need a press tour.
  • typo = fixed. Thanks!
  • Her quirky attitude is quite alluring. Even though she doesn't seem like the quickest girl (could just be a part of her personality. i.e shy, awkward, or just simply not good at doing interviews).

Plus Letterman can even make some pretty intelligent individuals seem oblivious or stupid. Just his comedic style I suppose.
  • diana444
I think people don't realize how dry kristen Stewart's humor is...yes, she isn't good at the publicity thing and freely admits this, but she is quite aware in this interview that David is giving her a hard time - and goes along with it. She doesn't enjoy this aspect of the job just like so many other actors, so she goes along for the ride hoping for it to be over soon - it's not that she doesn't get it - it's that people don't get her. Watch again and you'll see ..."yeah, it really sparked something in me..." absolutely deadpan and hysterical
  • Correction: You say "Eisenberg’s Jesse" when it should be "Eisenberg’s James." I believe he is always Jesse.

Anyway, I liked this movie, and like Pat said above, I expected this too be more of a comedy than a romance. Maybe this was because I knew Martin Starr, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig were in it. However, my error in assumption was not disappointing. I think the fact that it was more serious was still good. I think I will have to wait to see Kristen Stewart in other roles before I peg her as a good or bad actress. This role was very limiting (and for good reasons) so it doesn't show her scope at all. And I haven't seen Twilight.
Overall, a great film. It made me hate Ryan Renolds a hell of a lot less (I even sorta liked him) so that's definitely a good thing. I basically only went to see this movie because of Martin Starr, and he really delivered. A worthwhile time at the movies.

    I give it a 7 out of 10.
  • Kristen seems to have a dry sense of humor that makes her damn sexy. Very quirky.

If you have to remember she's only 18 years old.
  • coco
David is know for making people uncomfortable to the point they hang themselves, when he has judged someone poorly, this is what he does. Anyone can say something stupid when nervous and on the spot like that. How comfortable can it be talking on national television about how you haven't finished high school. She's is young, and I like her acting. She deserves a chance and to be measured on her acting not how well her nerves stand up against Lettermen.
  • Christina Rueda
This film will be awesome. I like the directors approach to comedy, and he is originally from Long Island.
  • CBLARPA
Caught an advanced screening at KU.. definitely a great movie.
  • moose
You should see Kristen Stewart in The Cake Eaters. It'll definitely make you see her as someone with a big career ahead
  • Why does Kristen Stewart touch her hair so much? Not in a mean way. I don't even care that she did it in the Letterman interview. but she did it in Adventureland like 100 times and it drove me nuts.
  • I thought she actually touched her hair a lot less than usual. I've seen her in a number of films and she made me want to hand her a brush or barrett. LoL This movie she still had bad hair and played with it, but not nearly as much, it was a vast improvement.
  • Travis McGee
She keep saying "um" and "uh" a lot. That was driving me crazy...
  • Chuck
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I found myself laughing at her dry humor far more than anything Letterman said (or frankly, anything he has ever said).
  • Agreed, Chuck. And also, agreed diana.
  • bobbyboy
I think Kristen was great in Land of the women and in Into the wild(she sings very good) and I watched Twilight just for her, so I'm really looking forward to this Adventureland
  • Paul
This was a great movie. Great story and good laughs. I'd highly recommend seeing it. This is not just another awkward-guys-gets-into-relationship flick.
  • After reading the review, I really want to see this movie. I seems like the general public won't agree and watch this movie, which is a shame, but I guess they don't know what they're possibly missing.
  • You gotta love how the video has a cover band of Neil Diamond attached to it. That's probably the high point of the video.
  • Simon
dude, she's been losing brain cells with every puff of her joints. I hope she stops smoking because it totally comes through her interviews.
  • christina Rueda
Dude, she might smoke pot, but maybe she doens't know what to do on the interview. she could be a little shy. Some actors are.
  • grow up simon.
  • So many people expect every actor to be graceful and well spoken for the public and those are unrealistic expectations. It seems like Kristen is shy and perhaps a little awkard and for this she is crucified by so many hateful tween and teen girls. God forid a high profile actor be human, crazy, crazy. The girl is only 18yrs old and has recently been shoved into an overwhelming limelight perhaps in time she will learn to relax a little and appear more comfortable during interviews.

I went to a matinee of Adventureland and while I thought it would be more of a comedy I was not disappointed in the least. I loved this film. As a child of the 80s I often giggled at the surroundings and clothings and I dug the soundtrack. The cast is wonderful particularly Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig always had me laughing. I look foward to seeing more from Greg Mottola.
  • mch4799
I find Kristen Stewart extremely annoying. Sorry:( In Twilight she blinks so much and talks too fast and mumbles really the whole movie. I really can't see the allure of her to men or women. She seems very uneasy and depressed, way to serious and dark. I don't find those qualities intriging in an actress. I think the upcoming movie where she plays Joan Jett will totally show her lack of range as an actress.
  • i persnially thought the movie was amazzing and creative i really didnt excpect the movie 2 be like that but am a huge greg mottola fan. i absoultley loved super bad it was fuckin huliours. it didnt excpect that movie to be like that either though. by the way i love kristen stewart huge huge fan she an absoulet amazzing actress and she so geoges i cant even discribe.she did a great job playing em.
  • Bob
Not sure about the Letterman appearance - he CAN be a little creepy. I'd like to comment on Kristen Stewart. I totally agree with David on this - she's absolutely captivating. She's got a presence about her that's decidedly older than she is chronologically. I watched Advantureland with my 16 year old son a couple weeks ago and admit that the movie stirred some identification with Jesse's character. But she stole that movie. I agree the Twilight series is teeny bopper fodder, but check out what Bruce Dern says about her in the interviews on the CAke Eaters DVD. He calls her a 'one of a kinder'. She does an amazing job in that movie as a teenager with a neuromuscular disorder dealing with adolescent stuff.
Apparently, She's going to do a movie called American Girl about a war vet (Iraq, I think) that James Woods is making that could be Oscar material.

guys, I found it a grat movie, first because the director was very careful on keeping the hole story faithfull to an 80ies movie(the timming, dialogues, slow motion going on story...to me made me remember the 80ies teen classics...ferris...breakfast club?)he kept it really to the time it was suppose to be passed on,the rambo headgears and the music(very good by the way...).about the actors I found owesome to see guys who are mainly from the 90ies(born during the late 80ies e early 90ies)like Kristen to play a story that could be their parents story, just think guys, teenagers from the 90ies were raised using cell phones and internet is very hard to imagine and play thinking like someone who never used a cellphone or internet and how they whould handle situattions...very intersting, I believed they made a great job.Kristen character is the sintesis of that age, end of cold war, Berlin preparing to explode, punk music going on,drugs heading to another way(after the contemplative 70ies) and obviously relations heading to a different pathway(open relations, individualistic views....).I just loved to watch this story going on a time that I acctually lived on and made me think a lot to remember how things change and how fast it was.great movie, nice love story(simple, usual and strong),remember guys we didn´t have e-mail back there, to keep in touch with someone, you had to do crazy stuff to meet each other....nice movie
