M. Night Shyamalan, cast and crew have rolled up in Reading, Pennsylvania to film some scenes for The Last Airbender. The principal location appears to be the Pagoda atop Penn Mountain, probably the most appropriate piece of architecture in Shyamalan’s beloved home state for the Eastern-ised aesthetic of the original cartoons, and apparently now the movie adaptation.

The Reading Eagle report that the location was dressed to represent a village destroyed by the “evil Fire nation”. Villains. More details and pictures below this virtual crease - some of which you might consider mild spoilers.

From the further set-up the paper provided it seems this Pagoda scene will come early in the story:

The movie’s screenplay (written by Shyamalan) focuses on Aang (Noah Ringer), the title character and a so-called Air nomad, who emerges from frozen hibernation inside an iceberg to discover that his village has been annihilated. The Fire nation is waging war on the other three: Air, Earth and Water.

I’ve seen bits and pieces of the cartoon and actually found it rather charming, certainly well conceived and more interesting than this sort of Saturday morning sprog-fodder typically aspires to be, let alone succeeds in being. My generation is supposed to feel nostalgiac for nonsense like Transformers, or perhaps Scooby Doo and the current wave of little ones get this Airbender business? They don’t know they’re born.

Previous shooting for the film took place in Greenland, here standing in for the Arctic. Greenland’s website Sermistsiak reported on that portion of production thus:

Filming in the north-west Greenland village will take place from 23 March to 3 April, and the scenes will make up a total of six minutes in the final production, estimated to have a budget of $250 million.

Here’s a picture from their site, showing the village in which Shyamalan was filming.

I’m possibly the only person actively blogging on a well-read site that will profess a love for this man’s work. I can find fault with Lady in the Water and The Happening, but I can also find a lot that is right with them - particularly Lady. Criticism of The Village leaves me utterly bemused, however, because that’s a genuine corker. It’s definitely on my list of the top 10 American films about the American political situation post 9/11.

"I’m possibly the only person actively blogging on a well-read site that will profess a love for this man’s work."

I gotta hand it to you, man. At least you're honest. I really WANT to like his films - conceptually, they're brilliant. In execution however...I'm so tired of being let down.
I still love Unbreakable, though. Whatever happened to the proposed trilogy?
  • stratisfire
shyamalan said that hes going to start production of the sequel to unbreakable during the writng fase of the sequel of last airbender
  • Is Zuko still played by that Slumdog Millionaire?
  • You should have titled it "Avatar Set Pics" to pull people in, thinking it's the Avatar made by a talented filmmaker that people care about. As opposed to, you know, THIS.
  • theDman
    hahahahaha
  • Clench
I'm with you completely on The Village. It's my favorite M Night film and really one of my all time favorites. It was marketed poorly and had people's expectations all out of whack.
  • filmkid
one big question Who Is Noah Ringer there is no pics of him
  • I don't think the movie made much money, and it would cost a lot to make sequels with Willis and Jackson. I doubt they would fund it given his recent BOMBS. I liked Unbreakable though, even if it was odd.
  • Jordan
hey lookie there a dolly party. haha.
  • Brian
The happening sucked major balls, but as i left the theater i actually looked at "_ _ _ _ _ _" differently... i didnt wonna ruin it 4 ya but still... the acting was horrible... and i love zoe duchannel (sp) and mark wahlberg! wtf happend? i have to agree tho.. 6th sence ws great, and unbreakable was awesome. signs was pretty good i liked that one alot!. but then we watch lady in the water and you just wanna vomet, rip the screen, punch a infent, kill a bunny then go play marko polo on the freeway!
  • Jaysun
Connelly, you are on fire tonight. This site got 110% when you arrived. There is no internet movie journalist that is as honest as you. Also, do more projects with Rich Johnston, my favorite comics and movie writers together? Crazy.
  • XCVBN
    I can't believe it's really HAPPENING!
  • I guess it's a good thing Shyamalan is getting away from the mysterious movies or whatever he's been making for the past decade. I think it would be crazy if it turned out that this was one of his best movies of his career. I guess he needs something to revive it after a few stinkers.

The only thing going for this movie is that M. Night didn't write the story, only the screenplay. On the other hand, all the characters in the cartoon are upbeat and I don't think this will be compatible with his generally prosaic approach to direction. Furthermore, Avatar (the cartoon) spanned 3 seasons and I really don't see how you can even make a dent in telling the story in 2 hours. This is all around a very bad idea. My housemate loves the cartoon and said he's going to steer clear of this inevitable train wreck of a movie.
  • There is a proposed trilogy in the works, success of part one pending.
  • freemachine
Yeah, yeah, like we haven't heard that one before from M. Night. Remember the "Unbreakable" trilogy? Whatever happened to that? "Unbreakable was a box office hit earning $250 million worldwide not counting DVD sales ($75 million budget). So where are the other two?

Face it, he's had a string of flops, whether you personally like them or not. There's no way a studio was going to trust him with a 3 picture back to back deal, like LOTR. So he's taking a gamble with a film adaptation of a popular cartoon series, which might never make it beyond the first film. What he should have done is assess his recent failures and try to make a comeback with a less ambitious project. Bottom line is that M. Night is a pretentious, self-absorbed person who refuses to acknowledge his own weaknesses---namely that he's out of gas as far as writing original stories and his directorial style has become stale.
  • Wasn't his call this time, though.
  • Mea
Peter Jackson wasn't trusted to make 3 LOTR films either from what I read. He made the first one with hopes of making the other two, but the studio didn't contractually agree to the other two movies until 'Fellowship' was a success.
  • Lencho
    Yep.
  • Ugh, stupid.
  • Not Really, I think Patel did a good job in Slumdog, and he might bring some good acting to the movie. Looking forward to it, though.
  • Seriously who cares about the acting in a movie like this? Even if he's a good actor we know that M-Knightshalalalshasha would find a way to destroy his performance.

For me the most important part is that they look like the characters in the series, Patel doesn't even come close to Zuko.
  • Looks ARE the most important thing. And even though you may not like M. Night, You really shouldn't make fun of someones last name. Just a tad racist.
  • scar
You are not the only one. I met him once, he's awesome. So are his work. So bravo and thank you for pointing out the good stuff.
  • I actually like Shyamalan too. And I don't care how many thumbs down I get for it.
  • Johnny Boy
I like most of Shyamalan's work, except the Happening and Lady in the water.... i thiknk he will do good on this movie, although, I worry the film might be too big for him. IF this $250 million is correct, that's nearly 4 times as big as Shymalan's previous film... He usually does stuff in the $60-70 million range.
  • krazyguy
I think Shyamalan is a great director just not a script writer. If he gets his hands on the right scripts or collaborates with the right people on a script, he would make amazing movies.

And 'The Village' sadly is one of his most misunderstood movies. It is not a mysterious horror/thriller but a deeper movie than that. Ofcourse ':Lady in the water' and 'The happening' were real stinkers.
  • Wow, even the fans of the show don't want to see this movie. I really don't blame your room mate for not wanting to see this. I would absolutely hate it if M. Night decided to take on something I really enjoy watching.
  • I've been wondering what was 'Happening' with this film. I really hope M. Night can make this work, he needs another boost up, after the last dull movies..
  • Lencho

Really excited and scared for this film at the same time.

The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were great, but everything he's done since has become progressively worse. It's got to the point that I won't even bother to waste a slot on my Netfix queue for The Happening...I'll just wait for cable.
  • hoipolloi
I completely agree but just a warning... please don't waste 2 hours of your life watching "The Happening". You'll want them back.
  • Meg
Hey, better than Jesse McCartney. At least we've got one vaguely ethnic looking person on the cast. It bugs me that they've flip flopped it and now the white kids are good and the dark-skinned kid is bad, rather than the other way around like it was in the show.
  • stratisfire
well i dont think they intentionally made it like that cuz zuko was supposed to be a white kid at first and then they had to hire someone else and they ended up being dev patel..so i dont think they intentionally made it the light skins vs the dark skins if yah know what i mean
  • Meg
I loved Unbreakable. And I'm with Brendon on this one. I like more of Shyalaman's films than I dislike them. I'm about the only person on the planet who loved Lady in the Water, but love it I did. I was not such a fan of Signs, though.

I'd love to see another Unbreakable. It was like a tribute to comic book fans.
  • Meg
The limited amount we can see from the set looks good. But the cast still pisses me off no end. It's just wrong.
  • M Night needs a comeback
  • Qillaq Berthelsen
I'm from Greenland! This is so weird, I've been reading Slashfilm for about a year now
and suddenly something about Greenland is posted here.
    Cool!
  • Shyamalamadingdong
Lady in the water is an awesome modern fairytale

All of you that hate it are dumb
  • zedarean
This movie is budgeted at over $200 million....and you don't think they would give him enough to make unbreakable 2?
  • "...nonsense like Transformers..."

Careful...You have to understand that the original Transformers was a work of its time. The 80s were a somewhat reprehensible period in terms of culture. You know, with the greed and all. The only good thing to come out of it were seminal Japanese anime and Hip Hop.

Compared to its contemporaries the O.G. Transformers was Shakespeare. And I'm not joking. Watch an episode from the 2nd season. Rapier wit for a "Saturday morning sprog-fodder".

  • The 80s produced at least ten thousand items of media better than any Transformers epsiode.

it is known in hollywood that when Night finishes his screenplays he makes sure his contract has a NO REWRITE clause and not one word will change once he writes FADE OUT. Any great talent will tell you that you have to be open to suggestions and changes.....this is why his last films have been weak.....he continues to buy into his own hype......6th Sense was a great film and Unbreakable very good......but from then on.....his films have just had too many plot holes and repeats IMO
  • Goro
MNight has a visual eye that can make for some absolutely stunning moments on screen, but his stories are so-so, characterizations abit shallow and uninteresting, and his camera work is EXTRMELY invasive. While these camera technique are cute in itneresting, it's also distracting and pulls me out of the movie. There was once a criticism of him that called him out for using every film-school trick in the book. That's about right.

I think with a good story and a strong producer, M Night could make some fine films, but i think he's at the point where he's unlikely to give up any createive control or power like that.
  • DanDFromNJ
THE HAPPENING WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE! They just got the genre wrong. It's a comedy. When the girl on the phone says, "Calculus, I see Calculus," and jumps out the window; I couldn't stop laughing. My girlfriend was quoting it for weeks. M Night Shakiraalbum is one of the worst writer/directors that haver graced the silver screen. His only good movie was his first.
  • I think you mean his third, The Sixth Sense. Perhaps you'd like his first 2 too?
  • FrankMarshall_KKK
this is a racist piece of garbage
it is untrue to the original source material
it casts white kids as Inuit heroes and Indians and Persians as East Asian villains/heroes... and y wont they show pics of noah ringer? maybe cuz he's as white as sliced bread

    white vs brown...

    rolls eyes

    is hollywood still this ignorant?
