Try not to laugh when you read the following Associated Press quote from Miley Cyrus - and then stay tuned for a reason you should actually expect the Hannah Montana movie to be worthwhile. Honest.

So, first of all, here’s Ms. Cyrus on why there won’t be a sequel to this spring’s motion picture:

We got really lucky with having the material to make one movie. I don’t know if I would do another film, but I would love to do another season. That would be what we would all agree on.

Not all of us will agree on that, dear. See the comments section below for proof of that fact.

The director of the Hannah Montana movie is Peter Chelsom. That fact alone has me interested to see it and I would hope he’s a name that registers with at least some of you too.

Chelsom’s 1991 debut, Hear My Song, is a 91% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes; his follow up Funny Bones scores only 65% but, in actuality, is the better picture. It was obviously cut heavily before release - the jutting remnants of excised subplots can sometimes be conspicuous between the otherwise fluidly woven plot threads - and there’s some love-it or hate-it casting, but there’s no getting away from how rich, idiosyncratic and beautifully shot it is. Funny Bones is definitely overdue a good DVD release.

Some of Chelsom’s other movies are markedly less popular. Town and Country, which sprang initially from a perfectly strong script by Strange Behaviour/Strange Invaders director Michael Laughlin, was rather muddy and sour by the time it had flowed over the crags of Warren Beatty and the interfering studio; Serendipity is skippier and smarter than folk expected, and I don’t think people cleared their eyes to see if for what it was; the occasionally brilliant Shall We Dance was mismarketed as a simple Richard Gere frotting on J Lo romcom, which it most definitely was not.

So, while Chelsom has certainly made at least one bad film, I don’t think we have any evidence of him doing much bad filmmaking, and the distinction is important. Myself, I don’t care if a film is targetted at tweens, teens, thirtysomethings or octagenarians - if it’s put together properly and with understanding of the medium, I’ll appreciate and enjoy it.

Chelsom thinks cinematically, and he makes films his films well and those two things are rather more rare than many would assume. If he signed on to direct the Hannah Montana movie then I’m sure he saw something in it and, I have every confidence, he’ll have found something to do with it.

So, a big studio is considering making a sequel to a movie that has a proven fan base and target audience? (Similar to an earlier post today regarding Star Trek?) No one is forcing me to see it, I fail to see the inherent problem here.
  • Sarcasm
he found something in it alright. A house on every american coast...
  • yes, Miley darling, we're sure that your movie is going to be ohhh soooo amazing. Idiot.

Chelsom has REALLY done himself in for signing on to do a Hannah Montana movie. Where's the dignity gone to?
  • hahahahaha indeed
  • strawberryshakes
not sure if it's to laugh with or at. but i've come to enjoy brendon's posts.
  • Can't wait to read her quote when the sequel is announced. She'll do what she's damn well told and she knows it. I'll obviously skip this and patiently wait for her to turn 18 and start releasing raunchy songs with equally raunchy video clips, propelling her pop career on the back of public outrage giving said career the exposure it will need to consider her finally 'matured'. Then, of course, drugs and rehab.

looks like Captain Howdy & Angrybroomstick make a good pair or couple! I don't get why adults feel the need to slam this kid - what is it? the fact that she has helped to support Disney & will have the Mouse House making a cool 1 billion dollars off of her. Or is it that she has become rich so young? The kid is cute, sweet & talented & given half a chance, may well prove to be a very talented grown up actor & singer one day. She already has the success in singing, having sold over 13 million records combined as Hannah & Miley & I would bet you all that NO drugs or the like will be part of Miley's life style. She already is a big charity giver & supporter - a very good thing for someone so young! Cut some of these young kids a break - stop trying to put all of your cynical thoughts on them!

i don't like her not because of her exemplary charity work, which is certainly commendable, but because of her recent snooty behavior. and i find it endearing and slightly odd you are so trusting of an individual who is ultimately a stranger and are willing to bet on her future as if it's set in stone. i will go on record and say there WILL be drugs in her future and she may or may not be affected by this. but i mean who really cares anyway? and it just goes to show you, chris brown was a completely wholesome gentleman 2-3 months ago...now look where he is. you just never know.
  • Law Blog
That doesn't mean people should be slamming her and saying "oh well, she will turn out to be the usual hollywood sl** anyways." Wtf is that? I don't think its fair, nor warranted, she's still just a kid.
  • Bob Loblaw
    agreed
  • GoreBaby
    I'd fuck her
  • Oh hey that's not creepy...
  • Eric R.
Yea then get 15-20. Just wait a few years more Gore.
  • yuck, you're a paedophile.
  • josh p
hhahahaha thats funny cuz he could just be like a 15 or 16 year old guy.
  • That's just fucking Disgusting. Are you on Neighborhood watch.com? because there calling.
  • Wow, It not really news i mean this stupid movie is just going to be a cash cow for Disney. But i love to see it Crash and Burn like the Jonas Brothers movie did. I get it, Hannah is Britney spears when she had all of those other identities during her nervous breakdown. (Pink Hair, English chick, Bald crazy chick) But my god, she is one of the dumbest people you ever heard talk.
  • Eric R.
Ahh...the Spears/Lohan/Hilton effect. Good call on that one!
  • Might not be that bad. I'll definitely give it a chance before deciding if it sucks or is awful.
  • A.J
Directors need to eat, their stomachs don't give a shit about their street cred.
  • true and sad.
  • ziggy ziggy haha
well i wouldnt mind more hannah montana episodes myslef.
  • GoreBaby
    It's gonna be hard...
  • starscream9289
Dammit Myley! Hurry up and be 18 already >.<
  • Did anyone see her on Leno last year? She's such a snobby bitch! I was really pissed after watching that interview.
  • 790
Perfect for the gimmincky 3-D medium.
  • Did anyone see her interview on the red carpet at the Oscars this year? The interviewer (it was probably Ryan Secrest, though I don't specifically remember anymore) told her that they'd love to see her on the red carpet in the future, and her response was that she'd love to be there next year, even possibly as a nominee. She talked about how serious her upcoming movie was, and it took me a minute to realize she was referring to the Hannah Montana movie. I actually couldn't make the connection right away because it was so ridiculous.

THE GIRL THINKS SHE COULD LEGITIMATELY BE NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR FOR THIS MOVIE.

I've never been a fan of hers, but I never really had a reason to dislike her either. But now I do. I really, really do.
  • starscream9289
    LMAO

The Rock has a better shot at getting an Oscar nomination xD
  • riley
when she meant she has a serious movie coming up, she meant the last song. not the hannah montana movie dumbass!
  • Matt
"Not all of us will agree on that, dear. See the comments section below for proof of that fact."

You know, I don't like Hannah Montana either, but who the fark cares if some stupid show on the Disney Channel gets to continue? GET OVER IT PEOPLE! I don't think any of you are tied to your TV with it locked onto the Disney Channel, unless some weirdo Jigsaw-like torturer is making the rounds. It's amazing how whiny people can get on the internet...
  • I don't care who they aim their movie at either, I'll watch it just as long as its a quality film too...but its fucking Hanna Montana, how good could a movie about Hanna Montana be...
  • Palmer
Meh, she's spoiled and crazy. That was evident when Radiohead didn't want to see her at the Grammy's.
  • freemachine
Does anyone on /film actually give a fuck about the Hannah Montana movie? Must be a slow news week.
  • I think Chelsom has proven more than capable in the past, and I honestly believe that if he put forth his best effort, he could make the Hannah Montana movie at least mildly entertaining to a more mature audience. I echo Brendon's sentiment that despite a less than alluring subject matter, I can and do appreciate movies that are done well, notwithstanding an initially unattractive premise. Unfortunately, I'm left wondering where the incentive would be to elevate the film quality to a level that would satisfy or entertain adult audiences. Disney knows who it is catering to and who will be driving success at the box office. I guess I just wish tweens were less satisfied with contrived, bubbly prattle and more engrossed by films with substance.
  • Getoverit
oh I get it...because I'm not the target demographic for the Hannah Montana movie, I'm supposed to rip this project to shreds. Why was this even posted on this site?
  • Peter Chelsom. That's why.
  • My god, what are you people complaining about? How many of you (unless your the parent of a 8-13 year old girl) will actually see this? Why should you care about Hannah Montana? She's simply just Kids Entertainment made simply to make money for bigger corporations, like Transformers, Pokemon, TMNT, Barbie, and countless other toys and TV shows were for you. Let the kids enjoy it.
