sherlock holmes oscars

A trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Homes premiered this morning at ShoWest. This is definitely not the Sherlock Holmes you’ve ever seen before. I was surprised at how comical the footage was. It felt a little like the humor of Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean films. Fans of Ritchie might be interested to know that the director’s stylish cinematography was definitely intact. During a sequence showing the barenuckle pitfight, Holmes’ punches are executed in a slow motion style reminiscent of the video game Fight Night. And while the film isn’t set in modern day, the trailer had a very contemporary in-you-face edit. Of course, I’m not sure if this was just a trailer cut for ShoWest, or if it might be an early version of the actual theatrical trailer. Some people commented on Robert Downey Jr’s accent, which wasn’t too believable, but I’m sure in the context of the movie it won’t really matter.

The presentation also included extended trailers for The Hangover, Terminator Salvation and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I’ve seen so much of Terminator between the various roadshows, on set sizzle reel, and comic con presentation, but I’m still impressed every new pass. The most notable thing about the new extended trailer is a shot of either John Connor or young Kyle Reese holding a photo, THE photo, of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor from Terminator.

Before presenting the trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Warner Bros head Alan Horn joked that he hopes fans can forgive him for moving the film to July, and that “we got a few emails about that one.” The footage was incredible, as is to be expected. A lot of really cool visuals which I  won’t even attempt to disservice by describing.

As the keynote began, Horn made another funny joke. He noted that the large auditorium was very full, and that if every person in the room had paid $10 to see Watchmen, the film might have performed better. I’m paraphrasing, of course, but it was pretty funny. But I’m surprised that he would make that joke.

  • thats a ballsy joke that tells me they are proud of the movie they made and wouldn't have done it another way. another reason why i love warner bros.
  • yeah i totally agree with you.
  • gah
Agreed WB is probably the best major studio out there.
  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back Sarah Connor. She kicked ASS in T2 and she was the most memorable character in that one... PLEASE GIVE LINDA HAMILTON A SPEAKING ROLE!!! V.O is not good enough.
  • a voice over is a speaking role you idiot
  • Justin
I don't think you said "please" enough in all caps. Try again.
  • a voice over isn't the same as a speaking role, but I should have clarified, a BIGGER, hands-on role.

no need for name-calling, thanks... fucking idiot.
  • the bad part about that is her character dies before judgement day....I think it's the same thing in the books....it really wouldn't make sense to do flashbacks unless they actually show her death...I'm fine with just a voice over when she did it in T2 it made the film very strong...maybe the voice over will be attached to a montonge in the opening showing the bombs dropping and the evolution of the terminators...
  • It is Sci-Fi. Maybe they will try to reanimate (as a terminator) Sarah in the Sequel. I'm just full of cool ideas.
  • maybe, but that's unlikely to happen.
  • Noooooo, DUHHHHHHHH!!!! I just think that would be cool. Use your imagination
  • Damn I thought the Ritchie Sherlock Holmes was going to be gritty and bad-ass, then the Ferrell/Baran-Cohen mash would obviously be comedic. Jude Law has good comedic timing so it'll be interesting. And I agree with Broomstick that Sarah Connor is probs one of THE most bad-ass female characters out there. Get her back fa sho!
  • Sounds like it's one fun show. It's good to see WB can joke around like that.
  • Patrick Soldi
When will those who have the capability of watching the trailer be able to watch the trailer for "Sherlock Holmes"?
  • I expect the trailer to be attached to Terminator Salvation
  • Ritchie makes comedies they're masked with being in the gangster genre but still they have humor....I'm not surprised that Holmes will have funny moments...

Like Linda Hamilton can save this film. Lol.
  • gah
Well, Iron Man was funny because Downey has a great comedic gift. So I'm sure it will be tonally similar.
  • I agree. I LOL still at some parts in Snatch and Lock Stock. No one else did? Hmmm....
  • Cat
A picture does not count as appearing in the movie for linda Hamilton.
  • freemachine
I don't mind if SH will be more humorous than expected as long as they keep it heavy on the mystery.
  • stewie griffin
I truly do agree with you freemachine. I am glad that Sherlock Holmes will have humor, action and mystery to it. That is even more a reason for me to go see it. I can't imagine RDJ doing a truly terrible movie. I believe he cares too much about every movie he does, he is a method actor. An actor does't lose that much weight to play a character , and change their looks so much for a movie, if they don't care about their fans and the movie itself. I am just impressed that he cared enough about us, his fans. Most actors just don't give a d**n. I'm with ya! Bring on the 'Humor', the 'Action' , and the ' Mystery' ! I can't wait!
  • "too believable" ??????? After all that hoot and holler about Brad Pitt's Southern accent. Then you say "too believable"? Sometimes fanboys can be too much for my stomach to handle.

    That's it. I QUIT!
  • Zinc
Fuck Alan Horn. Watchmen was great.
  • Everytime I see the WB logo before a trailer get excited. I wish all the studios logos gave you that feeling. Sherlock Holmes, where the wild things are, harry potter, T4 - all looking to be excellent films. I expect Holmes to be very funny - most of Ritchie's films are.

There aren't many storytellers worse than Guy Ritchie (I guess Joe Carnahan). If that's not important to the studio then they made the right choice. All the good directors must've passed. Downey could elevate it though.
  • Guy ritchie will eat your children.
  • im sorry your taste in directing is so off kilter
  • Gennaro Gatusso
"Comical... bare-knuckle... slow motion... in-your-face editing... unbelievable accent..."

SOMEBODY STOP GUY RITCHIE BEFORE I KILL AGAIN
  • I also thought Snatch and Lock Stock were hilarious, I LOL'ed so many times, too.
  • Well obviously I thought Snatch & Lock Stock were hilarious, but Peter compared the humor of Sherlock Holmes to POTC. That's way different than Snatch or Lock Stock.
  • I'm shocked the machines haven't started getting into cloning...maybe that will be a storyline in the future
  • Just didn't have the mass appeal to make any money.
  • "It felt a little like the humor of Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean films"
I guess that counts me out. I hardly found those films funny at all. That style of humor becomes laboring after 30 minutes. I sure hope Sherlock Holmes is a bit more tasteful, or if it is meant the be humorous, I hope it actually IS.
  • i dont care what kind of movie this is going to be... all i need to know is guy ritchie is writing/directing and robert downey jr is starring in it. im not expecting a new snatch or rocknrolla to be made, but dammit this is going to be good.

Really disappointed to hear that about SH. It's a classic book and if Downey Jr. is playing respect to the most famous detective of all time by at least using a good accent, I'm hugely disappointed.

Robert Downey jr. isn't being disrespectful. He has a fantastic British accent, I have heard it on You Tube. Please go to that sight and listen. Only a true Brit can actually make an opinion on his British accent. I am from England and now live in the USA. There are several different types of Brit accents, some of my family sound more Cockney English and others sound more proper or our Majestys' English. It all depends where in England you are from. I think he sounds fine and it doesn't offend me. That might be why one of the writers that was there ",said that all the actors (including the British ones) had different accents.' Because there are different types. He sounds fine - they shouldn't judge him. Mr.Downey isn't a Brit but he does a very good job at playing one. I am one person who will see the movie. Robert Downey Jr. will be a fantastic Sherlock Holmes.

    I meant isn't paying respect***
  • I like the comedy in Lock Stock and Snatch as much as the next guy, but since there is already a wonderful comedic SH movie with Ben Kingsly and Michael Caine called Without a Clue (and I'm assuming the Will Ferrell movie will be comedic) I was hoping this would be a little more raw. The POTC comparison has me worried too. Still, I think I'll go watch Without a Clue again.
  • Justin Craig
I wish Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines had never been born. It threw off the continuity!!!! However, me and the rest of the guys at the comic book store can't wait for the new one.
  • he may have compared the humor to POTC...but we are talking about Ritchie's films and the fact it's not shocking he woud continue to use humor...there are many types of humor in film making...if it's more of broad action type of humor I can understand why it's being compared to Pirates...also the fact it's a period piece would follow that comparison...yet this is Ritchie he has adult humor which we'll most likely be seeing..minus gorey violence and cursing....along with the fact this a WB film not Disney so they're aiming for an older audience while still aiming for a PG-13 rating...
  • shelle
I think the film is going to be fantastic and my family can't wait to go see it. I don't believe it is the POTC either, they made an idiotic comparison. It's not a Walt Disney movie and Robert Downey Jr. is not playing a drunken pirate in the movie - what Disney did was slapstik humor. This is a totally different type of humor altogether. You are right there are different types of humor and this will be a far more intelligent type of humor , it was made for a varing audience . I think Robert Downey Jr. does his best at any role placed in front of him. He appears to give 100 percent, he'll elevate the movie and save it if it needs saving. I feel it is worth going and seeing due to all the fabulous actors involved. You cannot judge or condemn a movie , in my opinion, on 2 minutes worth of trailer. Sometimes movies need to be both cerebral and humorous not just one or the other. I want to see one thats both. (thanks Christopher you helped make my day - intelligent comment!)
  • Peter, any news on when a teaser/trailer will be released for Sherlock Holmes?
