Beauty and the Beast 3D Sequence Wows at ShoWest

When Disney first announced that they would be rereleasing Beauty and the Beast upconverted into Digital 3D, I was very skeptical. For a film like Toy Story, the up conversion makes sense because the movie was animated using 3D models. But with a hand drawn animated film like Beauty and the Beast, you have an entirely different animal altogether. I imagined someone ripping through the original film frame by frame, cutting out characters and objects, and separating them into layers, and that the result would look similar to the effect of the old multi-plane animation camera. Boy, I was wrong.

The film’s original producers Don Hahn and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale are using the film’s original computer files to re-render the film in 3D in a 10-month process. If you want to learn more about the process, read this post.

At Disney’s presentation at ShoWest, they premiered the just completed first scene featuring the musical number “Belle”. It blew me away. The best way I can put it is that Beauty and the Beast looked new again. I’m not a huge supporter of 3D, so don’t take this as me just drinking the kool aid being served at this exhibitor convention.

Bell had what seemed like added dimension, and the whole thing worked incredibly well. I wish you could see the scene for yourself, because almost everyone I talked to in attendance was instantly sold. I can totally imagine Disney doing this with other releases. I’d like to see Lion King or some of the older classics back on the big screen.

  • Cool. Lion King would be great. The story and overall grandness of that film was breathtaking in 3D. Still not a big fan of singing in movies though. I'm glad Pixar has stopped all that nonsense.

agreed: singing in movies is not particularly a "plus" for me...
  • Agreed, I'm not a fan of singing movies. The occasional one has good songs (Nightmare Before Christmas) while most have me cringing and looking at the clock while the singing goes on (Corpse Bride). Even as a kid I really hated the dancing and singing bits of Mary Poppins and always fast forwarded through them.
  • For the most part I dislike singing and song numbers in films, but when I was a kid I loved Disney movie songs. They may seem corny now, but they were pretty incredible pieces of music. I mean, songs like 'A Whole New World' or 'Mukkuna Mattata' are still repeated by children and adults alike currently; those musical numbers have had quite a powerful effect on some people.
  • Sounds good to me.

The Lion King SUCKED. Did anyone really empathize with an annoying little $hit who always whined, thought about himself and wanted things 'his way' thru out the whole film? Not me. Simba was a brat..
  • You suck, Annon.

Thank you! I agree, I really can't stand that movie. I LOVE BatB though.

And with this, 3D madness has become a widespread epidemic. Though, I'm still interested in how it looks.

Months ago, I jokingly called the local cinema and asked about their midnight showing of The Lion King in 3D. I argued with the kid on the phone about how I had already bought tickets (even though the presentation wasn't actually real).

Subconsciously, I knew it was a great idea...and now my dream may come true.

"Bell had what seemed like added dimension..."

    ...Is that a boob joke?
  • "Did anyone really empathize with an annoying little $hit who always whined, thought about himself and wanted things 'his way' "

Why, in that case, you should love him! You both are practically doppelgangers!
  • I'd love to see Aladdin in 3D
  • A flying carpet in 3D would kick ASS.
  • Meg
Imagine that scene where he's flying out of the Cave of Wonders and everything is collapsing around him...

Not to mention the Genie! Love it, great idea.
  • I hope this does indeed rock as much as people are suggesting.

However, I can already foresee the future of internet movie fans. They'll long for the days when movies were just based on true stories or books. They'll actually miss flicks that were actually re-made or re-imagined. Because eventually, studios are just going to convert old movies into 3D and release them without any other changes and the "come up with some original ideas, Hollywood!" chants will never be more accurate.

    But whatever.
  • Yea, sad. If this works out financially, all of the Disney big guns will be unleashed again.
  • Don't rise to it.

Tho I do like Equilibrim. 'Salright. No Lion King but it 'salright.
  • NO DUMBO!
  • Disagree. I like singing in my Disney animated feature films-- provided that it's by that Tim Rice dude and the other guy.
  • Me
You remembered Tim Rice but forgot Elton John? LOL.
  • Part of the magic of these films is owning them on DVD (or good ol VHS back in the day) and watching them at our leisure. No amount of 3D gimmicking can replace that.
  • This is an interesting concept. I wonder how releasing these films in theaters will work financially.
  • lol hakuna matata

Ok, I read back in November ON HERE how this movie was going to be converted. That the way it was saved allowed it to already be separated into layers. How could Peter think they would do it frame by frame and separate the layers then?

Do you realize what this means???? Lucas will be inspired to go through with his plans to re-release all six SW films in 3D ---- God help us!
  • Hmm...well, if it looks good I'd give it a shot.
  • That scene is one of the first times in my life that I noticed bad CGI. Even at the time as a kid it stuck out.

OH god ;_;, i would pay 30 dollars for Lion King in 3D
  • My money is on a Little Mermaid release in 3-D. It was a huge hit and it's still pretty popular with kids and young adults who remember it from their childhood.
  • I'm 14
Personally, I would LOVE to see the Lion King 1 and 2 in 3D. They're both great movies, and I'm sure the younger kids would like to see those movies in 3D also. Especially if they didn't already see the movies because they might not have that movie since the Disney movies go in to the Disney vault. Not only would I like to see the lion king in 3D, I would also love to see the other Disney movies such as Tarzan, the Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, etc. Just think about the younger kids who would love to see the movies in theaters, don't think about the teenagers who don't enjoy Disney movies anymore, the younger kids will LOVE them.

I would like to hear more about their technique. I recently finished a similar project. I was the vfx artist responsible for turning Nosferatu into a 3D movie. I invented my own technique for creating the "second eye view". It was a very long process. I wrote an article on it for Creative Cow Magazine if you want more detail. If anyone's interested, the disks are finally available at www.qualitycheeseproductions.com.

If you don't want to post the link, people can search "Orlock the Vampire 3D" and find it that way.
