MTV have had a chat with David Cronenberg and gotten the good stuff on his plans for an Eastern Promises sequel. You may recall the end of the first film, or you may not - to reveal it here would be a spoiler, so I’ve tucked it under the crease with - but you probably weren’t expecting a sequel either way.

According to MTV, Cronenberg and Viggo Mortenson will reteam with Steven Knight, the screenwriter; Paul Webster, the producer; and Focus Features. The current plan is for them to sit down together and discuss the way forward, though Cronenberg says he has “some very strong ideas” of his own about where the story should go.

At the end of the original Eastern Promises, Mortenson’s character Nikolai is revealed to have been acting as an undercover agent for the British government. This opens the scope for a sequel up way, way beyond the subculture of Russian gangsters as featured in the original film but, of course, strong ties may still be maintained.

Even after this planned meeting takes place the sequel is far from certain. Firstly, all parties will have to agree on the way forward, then Knight will have to pen a strong script, then Cronenberg and Mortenson will have to find matching gaps in their schedules, and then… and so on.

Cronenberg’s Scanners and Fly remake each got sequelised and he himself was attached to the second Basic Instinct for a while, but the director has never made a follow up to one of his own films. In many cases that’s because his films end with apocalyptic sequences, in other cases, I assume, because he has seen no reason to return. From the MTV interview it seems like the appeal with another Eastern Promises comes from the extent of research carried out for the first film and never used, but also Cronenberg’s desire to work with Mortenson again.

I’ve been disappointed by too many Cronenberg projects falling by the wayside over the last 20 years or so, so I’m going to try and forget about this prospect until something more solid mainfests. Time for me to put my fingers in my ears and start singing Mary Has a Little Lamb.

  • Oh I so hope this actually happens. I loved the movie, and Mortenson's performance specifically. But the ending seemed just a little hurried, so a sequel would very welcome IMO.
  • This could be awesome. I loved eastern Promises (as well as History of Violence). Another team up for these two. I'm on board.
  • Awesome! I really hope this turns out, I loved Eastern Promises!
  • That's wierd. Are we reading from the same dictionary?
  • Haha, yeah I noticed that too, sry didn't mean to plagiarize or anything, just had the same thoughts.
  • As long as you're not me. That would be wierd but explain those blackouts and missing days.
  • Don't worry you're gonna love the new dvds I got you...well...at least I think you will.....I hope you liked High Tension....
  • I agree . It was a little... "oh by the way I'm undercover." A sequel would expand and justify this.
  • it does really need a sequel to explain Viggo's character and the whole underscover aspect....plus it would be kind of interesting to see Viggo take on the rest of the Russian mob...maybe we'll see how the originzation works in both England and Russia...

  • Yup.
  • I think that the ending wasn't really about the fact that he's an undercover agent, but more about the baby's fate in the movie. The Undercover reveal just answered a few of the questions I had during the movie. Like the one girl in the brothel, and why he'd be so stupid to leave a note on that guys body.

I thought the movie was great for what it was and I actually saw so much potential once the undercover reveal happened. Keep in mind that Viggo's character is still not the main boss. The son is now.

That last image of Viggo's character sitting in the retaurant wearing the suit, drinking vodka, and flipping the beads was one of the best shots I've seen in a long time.

Here's a shot vodka to the making of a much deeper and darker sequel!
  • Just tell me when and where and I'll bring a boom mic and some cables.
  • bob
i hope they make many more movies together.
eastern promises and a history of violence were fantastic

brendon connelly delivering the pilgrim AND cronenberg scoops today! holy shit i'll take em both! now if you give me a gilliam scoop and complete the trifecta, i'll swear allegience to your army and storm the globe for you.

as an avid film watcher, i feel we deserve an eastern promises sequel - fuck it, gimme a trilogy.
  • a trilogy would be AWESOME.
  • Ditto
  • Square
Ugh, leave it alone. This film does not need to be made.
  • This is gonna be excellent, Mortensen is such a phenomenal actor.
  • Eastern Promises was a good film and if they choose to do a sequel lets hope they do a good job.
  • Yes, yes, yes, yes! This was by far one of the most accurate movies about the vory v zakone, i felt right at home. I love the tone of the movie. Viggo's russian was also pretty good. Hell most of the actors played their roles so well that i believed they were russians.

Both EP and AHOV are both understated and intelligent films. They don't blow you away but after mulitple viewings, they really grow on you. Those are the types of films that I really appreciate.

Great news. Any Cronenberg news is welcomed.
  • Cronenberg has been all about exploring violence and it's justification lately. If he feels like there's more to explore, especially with these characters, let him do it. He feels it needs to be made, you feel it doesn't need to be seen.
  • Best news i've heard in a looonnnggg time

Finally, a sequel possibility for a *good* flick.
  • EXACTLY
  • Ash
Eastern Promises is so brilliant, this would be so awesome :D
  • Eastern Promises 2: More dongs o' floppin'
  • David Cronenberg... RIP.
So, we are doing sequels now, ah? Can someone please find out what kind of monster took over his body and controlling his actions? xD
  • I think thi is great... but I agree that Cronenberg is quick to change his status on projects.... Hopefully he will see this one thru!!!!
  • I agree. I think that if Mortensen and Cronenberg really wanted to work together again, they could probably find a non-sequel project to work on...
Eastern Promises just doesn't NEED a sequel, plain & simple.
  • first movie wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either. i could watch a sequel.
  • Seth
It was a really well made film, but it wasn't particularly original. From the warm old man who is really cold blooded behind the scenes and the up-and-comer who is really working for the good guys...

It was pretty by the book.

I don't see why the sequel wouldn't still be about the Russian mafia. It seems like the intuitive plot for a sequel would have to do with Viggo's taking down Vincent Cassel, who took over his father's criminal empire at the end of the first film.
  • This is awesome news, Eastern Promises is a movie that just stuck with me for some reason, I only saw it once but it's still fresh in my mind., Have to give it a rewatch sooon...

Aside Mortinsen, Vincent Cassel is also an awesome actor, but I'm assuming he's not in the sequel.
  • GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MORTENSON WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR WITH THIS CHARACTER.
THIS IS A GOOD WEEK SO FAR!
  • ben
I could see where having Viggo on board and interested would put more impetus (that may have been lacking in other Cronenberg projects) behind this! Especially if The Road is as bad-ass as it could be...
  • Was that the only thing you remember about the film?
  • That and scene where they go to McDonalds. I have a penchant for genitalia and Big Macs.

I can't believe you got this wrong (more than once in the article and IN the friggin title) - his Viggo MortensEn!

You're writing for a movie site and have IMDB at your hand, show that you care

    EPIC FAIL
  • YESSSSSS!
  • Looks like Jesus is crucified on a cross made of dicks.
  • freemachine
I'd love to see a sequel, but please Mr. Cronenberg, no more shots of Viggo's taint.
  • Since I enjoyed Eastern Promises, I would definitely watch a sequel to it. Since the ending of the first film leave the whole story open, they can pretty much do whatever they want with the characters they've established. I bet whatever way they go with this, its going to be as good as the first movie.

Why wouldn't Vincent Cassel be in the sequel?

An Eastern Promises sequel needs Cassel's character, Kiril; he is such an awesome character foil to Nikolia. Not to mention I am looking forward to a possible confrontation between the 2 characters....Kiril may be unstable, but he is not stupid. Eventually he would attack Nikolia for playing him.

Nikolai didn't work for the British Government- he worked for the FSB (Russian intelligence).
