Sherlock Holmes Teaser Poster Premieres at ShoWest

sherlock holmes poster showest

While at ShoWest, LatinoReview has snapped a shot of the teaser poster for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, which stars Robert Downey Jr. I’m sure it is just a promotional concept, and the theatrical edition may be different. I was able to clean up the poster a little (reflection removal and reframed perspective) but you’ll have to head on over to LR to check out the snapshot in larger resolution.

They also have a shot of Fox Searchlight’s final poster for (500) Days of Summer, which was one of the posters that was included in the /Film reader poll last month. We’ll be heading to Las Vegas on Monday to join in on the ShoWest festivities, so look out for our coverage.

Aside from the pipe (and obviously the title) I really don't think I'd recognize this as a Sherlock Holmes poster. I'd like to see something that evokes that Victorian Holmes I read as a kid...perhaps a swatch of hounds-tooth cloth or a magnifying glass.

I think it's pretty obvious from everything we've heard and seen so far, that Ritchie is trying to create a NEW conception of Holmes. And I for one am anxious to see this new iteration, because frankly, the more typical version has been done to death.
  • freemachine
Has it been done to death? I've enjoyed all of the incarnations of Holmes, especially the Jeremy Brett version. A true Holmes fan would never dare say that the film adaptations are stale, because while each version is slightly different, they all stick to the principles, and that's the allure of Sherlock Holmes. If Richie or any other director felt that they needed to create something entirely different, then they should just create a new Victorian Era detective story and run with it from there. In fact, why not make a story about Sherlock Holmes' older brother. Then you can muss about all you like. I seriously hope they stick to the asthetic that is Holmes and don't try for a reboot/revisioning that seems so typical of films these days. Sherlock Holmes is just fine the way he was written and has been depicted in films thus far.
  • VOR
    Yup. It sure has.
  • But don't you run into the problem of comparing your new victorian era detective to holmes, who for most people is not only the quintessential victorian era detective but the quite possibly the quintessential detective. people are going to compare this incarnation of Ritchie's to older incarnations so why not have this one be holmes instead of another person. he may not look like the old holmes but he may just act like him. And my holmes knowledge is sparse to begin with, seen a few of his adventures, but in the books is he actually described as wearing his infamous apparel that we have seen him wear time and time again or is it just a look created by those who brought him to the screen?
  • richard
    you enjoyed, not everyone else
  • Hazekiah
One good reason to NOT stick to those aesthetics is that they were created for the stage and film adaptations and, consequently, have NOTHING to do with the Sherlock Holmes of the novels and short stories. He never wore houndstooth, smoked from a curved pipe, or wore a deerstalker cap. The creator's vision of his own character has never been committed to film before Guy Ritchie's version, and it's about fucking time.
  • Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be kind of an intelectuall. I don't think Guy Ritchie's ever heard that word.
  • Funny, you wrote intellectual wrong.
  • looks badass
  • I understand everyone's concerns and I loved Sherlock Holmes as a kid as well. That being said the fact Robert Downey Jr. is in this gives me great hope. What was the last movie he did that was a failure. I am not talking box office, I am talking it;s general concensus. My first choice for this role was Hugh Laurie though he would have been perfect. A Ridley Scott directed version with Hugh Laurie starring.
  • Can't wait till the first trailer is released.
  • Palmer
First, Sherlock Holmes poster looks pretty good. Obviously it's not your normal take on Holmes. Second, the (500) Days of Summer posters looks great, it's actually the one I voted for. Hooray democracy!
  • /poster
heheh I voted for the same one too. I like it because it's the most colorful.
  • I also voted for that one. I like it a lot. And you're right on about Sherlock, it's not meant to be the standard Sherlock Holmes.
  • freemachine
Again, I really hope they don't divert too far from the A. C. Doyle version of Holmes. The characters are described in great detail in the stories and for some writer/director to come a long and "update" the character is an insult to the original work. It's like Daniel Craig's comments about hoping that one day there will be a black James Bond (comments made after Obama was elected). Why not just create a new British spy who happens to be black and then form a new series of movies from that? Fleming explicitly describes Bond, and even made sketches of him. What's happened to originality in Hollywood? The problem is that the suits are fearful that people won't flock to the theater unless they have a household name attached to the picture (i.e. Bond or Holmes). Hollywood has lost all originality and evidently won't give new writers and concepts a chance. They keep mining the old crap and trying to repackage it. I'm so sick of remakes. They might as well set the new Sherlock Holmes movie in present day while they're at it and give him a CSI lab.
  • That is the problem with change. The word "change" and the word "rip-off have a lot in common. If you make a black spy who happens to be British, well, things won't go well. I don't like Batman, so I am going to create Batguy! He is like Batman, but black! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Hollywood has run out of good ideas, and when you have a property just sitting around, like Holmes, you use it. And you are kind of right on the point of executives repackaging things. But if they never repakaged Bond, we would never have gotten Casino Royale. Anyways, I would argue that Daniel Craig's Bond was much closer to the vision of his Bond.
  • You know Stan Lee's Batman is actually Black.

Somebody should make a live-action "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century."

    Anyone remember that?
  • Palmer
Remember? The freaking theme song made sure you didn't forget what you were watching.

  • lol. I saw a couple episodes. Hey, if it gets us closer to a Batman Beyond film, I'm on board.
  • Yea, I definitely remembered that. And wasn't Watson half-cyborg or something?

Anyways, that female cop that always helped Holmes was hot.
  • filmkid
do anyone know that Robert Downey Jr do a british accent for this movie me personally i dont really want to hear Sherlock Holmes talking in an American accent. i hope Robert Downey Jr can pull of a good british accent.
  • That's not important, really. I think Downey will be able to pull it off either way.

It looks like the movie might be a lot darker than the books, however. Should be interesting.

Shake it up a bit, yet maintaining the source material is a tricky thing. One improvement that could be included is the rarely addressed issue of Holmes' IV drug habit. This would be a nice touch to fill out the character and I believe that modern day movie-goers are more accepting of these kinds of flaws in their heroes.
  • I agree with you that substance abuse would be a welcome (at least by me) addition to the film. But even that is reading between the lines of the original text, which to my recollection, never actually mentions him using drugs. It is vaguely implied though. I remember him going into an opium den at one point, but that was because he was "chasing a lead". Riiiight.
  • Hazekiah
In The Sign of [the] Four, Sherlock Holmes is injecting cocaine right off the bat. And Watson mentions he did the same with morphine occasionally. Both were mentioned in latter stories as well, but he is explicitly "seen" injecting cocaine recreationally as crucial plot point at the beginning of that particular novel.
  • Noted, thanks.
  • looks creepy and cool..
  • Never was a Sherlock Holmes fan. And Ritchies last couple of films were horrible. Hopefully he can put himself outside of being an English Tarantino and do something more than the usual stuff here.
  • Is he's playin' Kirk Lazarus again or is the picture too dark?
  • Is he's playin' Kirk Lazarus again or is the picture just too dark?
  • sheryl
So, did the books explicitly have Holmes wearing the godawful deerstalker, or was that the caricature created from some director's mind way back when? I'm confused. I've heard it wasn't in the canon, so is it just we have blurred screen images with canon?
  • Looks...modern.
  • Kind of reminds me of Wild Wild West.
  • Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be kind of an intelectual. I don't think Guy Ritchie's ever heard that word.
  • erica
The Sherlock Holmes poster need to be lighten up a bit its too dark
Frankly I hope they do not use this one when the movie hit the theater.
This poster does not reflect the holiday season which would add to the movie appeal
since it is being release at that time.
  • the point is for it to be dark
  • AleNade
If he were wearing a green hat, he'd look a lot like the Riddler. Maybe it's just because this looks just like those three Dark Knight posters; Batman/Batarang, Joker/card, and Dent/Pin. Holmes/pipe.

I found a great site """"" WealthyRomances com """""" It 's where you have the opportunity dreaming about dating a millionaire and make it true! I thought everyone needed to meet some miracle after all the terrible stuff in the news and the economy :)
  • Go on.
  • I for one am actually excited to see Ritchie moving outside his comfort zone. I dug RocknRolla, but wasn't much for Swept Away or Revolver. With Downey in it this movie has a lot of potential.
  • More than potential it carries a lot of expectation, and therefore plenty of room for huge disappointment - something all too familiar with Ritchie films.
  • It's very Scarface-ish
  • it's a Guy Ritchie movie, what do u expect
  • you dont know that. the movie might be amazing for all we know...
  • Seth
That poster is awesome. But I'd change the name of the film to just "Holmes."
  • Holmes in the Hood. But yeah, that sounds awful, and I hope you are being sarcastic.
