Harold Ramis Talks Ghostbusters 3

Cool Stuff: Ghostbusters-like Mini Vac T-Shirt

MTV was able to get Harold Ramis to talk about the next Ghostbusters movie, which is currently in the development/scripting stage with The Office/Year One scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky working on the script. Ramis has yet to receive a first draft in hand but claims that he has been consulting with the screenwriting duo, along with Dan Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman (who helmed the original film).

The biggest bit of news is that Ramis confirmed that all of the original Ghostbusters will return for the third film if it does happen, and that includes Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman).

“We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

This confirms previous reports that the original Ghostbusting team would be passing the torch to a new group of scientists turned supernatural exterminators. It will be interesting to see how this develops, and to see if Murray, who Ramis calls “the thorniest of the group”, actually signs on to participate in the new film.

The best news I've heard all day. Hopefully the new advents in FX won't overwhelm what I expect will be a great comedic storyline.
  • Gassy Slimmer
Great to hear that Bill Murray will be back!
  • Why do so many people think Bill Murray will be so hard to bring back? Even when hearing talk about the upcoming video games there's some line in most promo pieces like, "...and yes even Bill Murray is in the game". WTF?
  • Nick
I don't believe he's talked to Ramis since "Groundhog Day," but lately in interviews he's said that after doing the video game he got back in the mood to another Ghostbusters movie. I think Murray also had a lot of problems with the second film and didn't think they should take another stab at it, I don't doubt that the screenwriters are an incentive to do it.

worst news ive heard all day. anyone who is a true ghostbusters fan would never want new and younger ghostbusters, its the originals or no one!
  • Phil
Ghostbusters is in my top-5 of all time, behind only BTTF and Superman II. I CAN'T WAIT for the new film!
  • Don't listen to him. Please don't grow up.
  • Grow up.
  • <3 Bill Murray.
  • gah
my excitement for this will depend on who is cast as the new 'busters.
  • Mike
Bill Murray was reported as being totally against doing anything more with Ghostbusters for many years
  • While this news is great to hear, I'm also doing my best to keep my excitement below the surface until I hear some synopsis, casting and director news. Expectations are understandably high.
  • This shouldn't go ahead if they can't get Ernie Hudson back. He was the glue that held the other GBs together. I'm interested to know how he feels about the whole thing. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that he isn't too busy.

Star Trek reboot; Indy 4; now Ghostbusters ... I love all the originals, but still...
  • Hopefully Murray will sign. I'm honestly more excited to see who they'll cast as the young Ghostbusters. Apatow pack, maybe?
  • davide
the new crew: Stanley Tucci, Whoopy Goldberg, Bill Cosby and that kid who made Ace Ventura 3
  • This is great news. Glad to see the whole gang is going to come back if it happens (INCLUDING MURRAY!)
  • Solid
Better late than never as they say.
  • sarcasm
yeah... hudson has been the hold out all along...
  • GregoryV
Rick Moranis needs to come out of retirement just for this.
  • Goobity
Only if he and Dave Thomas are willing to do Strange Brew II, eh.
  • Janush Poeha
Cats and dogs living together under one roof...MASS HYSTERIA!

    is it really possible?

a Ghostbusters 3 with the original crew? it would almost bring me to tears...

    .
  • if anyone from the apatow crew is in it ill boycott
  • Palmer
So...it's going to be like Extreme Ghostbusters?
  • los keicharones
Why isn't Jason Reitman directing this?
  • J.D.
The only way this will work is if they show up as ghosts -- they accidentally "crossed the streams" at some point. Maybe the younger cast has to capture them while fending off the bad ghosts.

I know Seth Rogen is on the tip of everyone's tongue here and i've read a lot of love/hate for him possibly starring in Ghostbusters on other sites, i mean, i like the guy, like his films, but does he have to be in everything??
Rather than the Apatow pack, how about the tropic thunder? Ben Stiller and Jack Black were a good pairing and Robert Downy Jr could fill in for Ernie Hudson, he'd be a dude playing a ghostbuster disguised as another ghostbuster!
  • Dan
Talk about starring in everything--Ben Stiller, heh.
  • Goobity
Just like a 4th Indiana Jones film, this sounds like a 'great idea'. I'm not getting my hopes up...
Although, Bustin' DOES make me feel good.
  • This has such great potential to suck so much. I hope it doesn't.
  • It won't suck if the new batch of ghostbusters include Paul Rudd and Bill Hader.
  • Well I'm glad we're getting some news on this. I can't wait til we get another Ghostbusters movie. I'm also happy that the original cast is back for this film.
  • I'm not sure if people are against the Apatow pack in general or just them being associated with Ghostbusters 3. Honestly, I'm not sure what comedies you're watching these days that don't have Apatow's name attached that are nearly as funny as his stuff. So, I hope the new Ghostbusters are Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, Jonah Hill and Jay Baruchel and all they do is sit around and smoke weed and make dick jokes just to piss everyone off.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the Apatow pack were in it as long as it's well done. Hell, Ramis was in "Knocked Up", so I wouldn't count the possibility out. After Star Wars, it's kind of hard to put too much faith in a "Hey, let's wait 20 years and make more franchise movies" idea.
  • It's good to hear they'll be playing "mentors", given all of the original cast are in their 50's and 60's now.
  • Please, please, please let Shia be in this. He would be an amazing Ghostbuster.
  • Give it to me. I'm a glutton for punishment.
  • GregM
    Odds at sucking: 96%.
  • skippy
    good point.

just because you can flood a movie with effects and CGI doesn't mean you should.
  • saint
Story idea: Shouldn't we follow oscar? He would be of age.
  • Peter
What no "Sigourney Weaver" with out her it will not be the same.
