Is The Veronica Mars Movie Dead?

Last we heard, Rob Thomas was preparing to pitch his treatment for a Veronica Mars big screen movie to executive producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros. So what’s the update? Do you really want to know? It doesn’t sound good… Thomas tells the New York Post that “while the pitch went well and I don’t think the movie’s dead, right now it’s looking depressing.”

“I think honestly if we would have had the pitch ready a year earlier, it would be a go project. The hope that we would get a quick greenlight didn’t materialize. This is the least optimistic I’ve felt in a while.”

And worse yet, Thomas is already talking about the project in past tense while describing what we might have seen.

“If we were going to do a movie, I would want to put Wallace and Logan and Mac and Weevil in it. We would have picked up just prior to Veronica’s graduation, it would have been the college years.”

I have a feeling that we haven’t heard the last of this project, and eventually things will come together … but will it be too late? How old could Veronica be before the concept just turns into your typical detective mystery? Part of the appeal of the show to me was the unique spin of setting the detective story in the world of High School and College. And as much as fans are craving for another fix, I’m not sure the story of a 30-year-old Veronica Mars might be all that interesting.

There's a lot of shows I'd like to see a movie for but I think Veronica Mars deserves it most. I'd love, love to see it anf I'd bring all my friends

I think they should forget the whole movie idea and work on another season, from what I've seen they ended season 3 not so well, it was more like a cliff hanger leaving us fans to think 'What the hell happens now'. I've not seen all the season and episodes but from what i've seen it's an amazing TV series. I hope they finish what they started.

i dont even get why they cancelled the show!!! i wish there was atleast a 4th season...they lyk owe it to us to make the movie:P

I want the movie so badly, But they can't have it opening a few days before her graduation! it has to be picked up where it left off, the whole Logan/Piz/Veronica thing. It would be impossible for the movie to just open up with Logan and Veronica happily togehter, after the three years. It wouldn't bet the same! it needs drama. We need to see their relationship form again. And see what happens with Piz etc.

why does warner brothers have to be behind it. doesn't this seem like it would be better in the indie circuit?
  • Christine
damn it we just wanted a wrap up, if kristen bell is saying joe silver thinks no one at warner bro's is interested in making the movie they're just fucking stupid. there's money to be made, I know that info wasn't in this article but Ive been trying to comment somewhere and this was the first place I found.
JUST MAKE THE DAMN MOVIE ALREADY!!!!!!
  • michelle
Come on wher still waiting on a finish to the show. Logan & Veronica have to get together.
  • Bailey
OH MY GOSH. they better make a dang movie!!!! i have waited wayyy tooo long to get my hopes up and then get them crushed by joel silver and warner brothers!! Only idiots would pass this jack pot up!!!

If Rob can;t make a movie then maybe he should write the book... and when that hits the top of the NY Times bestseller list, then maybe they will wise up and make the book into a movie. That my grand idea.
  • Christine
thats really good idea, it seemed to work for that piece of shit twilight and davinci code fuck.
  • Linda
30 year old veronica mars? Kristen Bell is like 28 now, I don't think a couple of years is going to make a huge difference.
  • Jules
Come on! You can't leave us all hanging with ALL these story lines...Please let us have closure to these, whilst the actors are still able to realistically portray their characters.
If not a cinema movie - why not a TV/DVD finale? PLEASE...:'(
  • itstheorange
I hope WHEN the movie gets made that it doesn't try to appeal to everyone rather than sticking to it's true style
  • Cecilia
I'm gonna cry if the veronica mars movie doesnt come out:'(

I love this show and would definitely watch whatever came next!

Lol crank old-lady Veronica has potential! It would be sooooo funny hehe all the sass with extra grumpyness on top!

On a serios note, I would really love to see a movie, the show had so much potential and there are so many people out there who don't even know it exists - purely because it did not get the coverage it deserved.

how can they be so stupid and not do that movie. so many people watched VM, they just did it online , so they were never counted. and so many just dicovered it long after it was cancelled. i'm sure there d be an audience
  • Kristen Bell is hot other than that I'm not a big fan of this series. She's best off spending her time on other projects.
  • Christine
I'm really worried we have a mind like yours petitioning against kristen bell doing more vm movies
  • Christine
and I'm sure she'd love to know you're concerned for her career
  • Biznass
I want the movie! I'm running through all the seasons now. I know it's a bit late, but I want a movie!
  • I want this movie so bad, and I know I'm not the only one. And marketed the right way, I think you could get people to come see it who weren't even fans of the show. Also, the thing with VM is that it's hard to get people to actually take a chance and watch it, but when they do, they love it. So this could be a word of mouth hit. Then again, maybe my love for VM is making biased.
  • why is Megan Fox so desperate to imitate Angelina? Stop wearing leather pants and stop copying her tattoos, Megan, you're NOT Jolie and never will be.. lmao
  • jUST GIVE IT ANOTHER SEASON ON TELE TO ACTUALLY TIES THINGS UP..

the same movie business that gave that dumbass McG millions of dollars to make another terminator movie we don't need. that movie industry. if you don't care ten why read and why comment?

    bubble
  • Christine
haha that's so true I hate terminator movies. there are people that would come to see this (VMars) though, maybe not enough peoplethough... I'm so bummed about this. And the show didn't stay afloat because the CW wanted to make way for the plethora of new "reality shows" in which people are acting still, but getting paid less to do it (more money for producers). The general public really likes crappy television and they LOVE watching the same movie over and over, with a different title i.e: "salvation". or listening to the same music instead of something new. People like to stay in their bubble. Fuck everyone... haha. It was definitely on the wrong TV station though, if it was on some random station I probably would've watched it before it came to dvd just because I knew the CW produced america's next top model also. AND SO it should be shoved into an indie light with an indie label (if possible considering wb probably holds some rights) to get the viewers that enjoy that kind of comedy drama, the kind where you have to think to understand not the ones we've heard over and over heretofore, in effect gobble gobble.
  • Christine
oh my god that was terribly written and I wrote it. Proof reading is key kids and heres why... doo dah doo do!
  • Damn... As much as I love the show and would be ecstatic to see any more Veronica, I don't really know how a feature film would work both financially and creatively.

There is a difference between giving McG tens of millions for a property that has big box office numbers written all over it and this show that couldn't even stay afloat on the CW.

Too bad DirecTV couldn't fund it and put it on the 101 like they did with Friday Night Lights.
  • Jeff W.
Of course this film will never be made! Except for a small handful of people nobody cares about this property. Why would they invest money in a film that would make $12-15 million opening weekend and then die a quick death after that? If X-Files bombed as badly as it did last summer who in their right mind would believe that this would make any money. Who cares.
  • Allison
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Chad
SAY WHAT?! I'd watch Veronica Mars if she was a 98 year old in her deathbed.
