Before Be Kind Rewind, before Son of Rambow, there was… three kids remaking Raiders of the Lost Ark, just for the heck of it. It took them seven summers and they grew up during the long shoot, but they saw the job through and, personally, I prefer their film to the original (though, before you jump down my throat, I can see that the original is superior in most respects).

Some fourteen or so years after it was completed, the ‘project’ received a rocket of publicity when Harry Knowles screened a VHS copy at his Butt-Numb-A-Thon festival. There have been other screenings, with proceeds typically given to charity I believe, but the film has never received a wide release. Until now…

The BBFC have just cleared the film for - surprise, surprise - a PG rating, as per the original. It was submitted to them by Vue Entertainment, the company that owns and runs the Vue cinema chain across the UK - including my local multiplex, here in Oxford.

This suggests a release for the film in the Vue chain, but not in other rival outfits. There’s a small chance this will not be the case - Vue’s rival Odeon, for example, have the Odeon Filmworks distribution umbrella and I think they’ve booked outside of their chain before now. This is definitely for a cinema release, though, not for DVD, as the different media are listed differently on the BBFC site. Not to say, of course, that a DVD release won’t be forthcoming.

I’m not sure on who cleared the rights to this, but well done that Super Lawyer.

Daniel Clowes was long ago now tapped to adapt the story of this film’s making into a screenplay. No news lately is probably bad news - it’s probable that Be Kind Rewind and Son of Rambow, fantastic though they were, have stomped on that one. Come to think of it… Clowes’ Death Ray and Master of Space and Time projects also appear to have stalled. Hey! No fair, studios! This isn’t just because Art School Confidential wasn’t Ghost World cute, is it?

Note the typos (?) on the BBFC listing? Raiders On the Lost Ark might seem to be a deliberate change, ala Rambow, but I see also that Eric Zala, the film’s star and director, is listed as Eric Zale. Perhaps the Vue flunky hit the wrong keys when making up the paperwork for submission.

Update:

Zala responds to our report on fancinematoday, and clarifies that the film will be making its UK premiere, but not a theatrical run:

We’re having our UK premiere in London – Tuesday, April 28th at Vue’s flagship cinema in Leister Square, courtesy of sponsor IGN! However, to clarify, contrary to the supposition in [Slashfilm], this is not for a theatrical run. Rather, it’ll be a one-night-only event, loaded with extras – official prop raffle, Indy buffet (think chilled monkey brains!), prop display etc. They’re flying Chris & I around the pond for the show and Q&A! Fun times ahead…

  • "I prefer their film to the original "

    Dude...really?
  • While I don't completely agree with Brendon's statement, you really need to see this film to understand where he's coming from. This movie is much more than a shot by shot remake of Spielberg's original movie, it's a love letter to the true independent filmmaking, as it can only be told through the unspoiled passion of youth.
  • that looked quite faithfull
  • awwww man. I love Daniel Clowes, I really hope that his projects will happen. This one looks fun, though.
  • Hehe, this looks nice :D
  • Please someone make a shot for shot remake of A New Hope...I would love to see that
  • stop. making. stupid. comments.
  • Stark1299
Have you seen the full movie? stop. criticizing. brendon. until. you. have.
  • While I don't completely agree with Brendon's statement, you really need to see this film to understand where he's coming from. This movie is much more than a shot by shot remake of Spielberg's original movie, it's a love letter to the unspoiled truely independent filmmaking.

No remake hate here! I can't wait to see this!
  • the adaption is f'n fantastic. I saw it in SF a year or so ago and it was honestly one of the most magical nights I have ever had in a theater. I was blown away by every detail from the elaborate opening sequence to the bar scene which almost burnt down there basement. The film kept a huge smile on my face and my eyes wide the whole time. The opening letter to Lucas and Spielberg at the beginning tugs at your heart, they honestly made this movie because of how much they love the original.
  • twstdbydsn
    I could kinda care less
  • Lono
Art School Confidential is one of the only movies I have ever stopped watching before it was over in my life. That being said, I agree that Be Kind and Son of Rambow will have essentially stolen any thunder this thing might have as it will seem like old hat by the time people are able to see it.

"Swede-ing" I'm over. If you are gonna go that far, write a freakin' original script. Might as well. It's not that hard. I'd be more impressed if this was the cake. I mean, who didn't do this kind of stuff as a kid?

"it's a love letter to the true independent filmmaking, as it can only be told through the unspoiled passion of youth"

It may have once been, but now it is about cashing in on that youthful passion. Let's no kid ourselves. I'd personally rather see a doc about the making of this than the actual film. But that just me.

Brendan, you have your head firmly shoved so far up your own ass if you prefer this to the original film. You even suggesting this is so disrespectful to Lucas/Spielberg and I am suprised Peter has even let you write a review with that perspective, it's an embarrassing opinion on the best site of it's kind around. Now that weve mad eit clear your an idiot, I'll say this.....

What these kids managed to do is remarkable. To keep focused on such a project for such an incredible length of time through your teens (you teens for god sakes!) is unreal. These kids (men now) deserve to be recognized and somehow rewarded for thier incredible tenacity and commitment to make something so great. Right on to them.
  • yes, because to state that you personally prefer this film to the original, while specifying that you understand the original is actually a superior film, is certainly the critical equivalent of a personal bitch slap in the face to both lucas and spielberg, followed by a solid knee to the crotch.

pay attention man, he's simply saying that he personally liked watching this version more than the original.
  • That's it.
  • MattK
Agreed, but honestly, you shouldn't make such a statement off-handedly. Give us the reason you prefer the remake over the original, Brendon. You're just inviting off-the-cuff responses when you give such a predictably-controversial statement

Personally, it's rather meta that a love letter to a film that, in itself, is a love-letter to a long-forgotten genre is getting such recognition this many years later.

As an amateur filmmaker, it's really inspiring to see something like this. Hopefully a release will be given to the film (perhaps an extra to a future Blu-Ray release of Raiders? Would get me to rebuy that again.).
  • This seems really unlikely--both Jason Lamb and Chris Strompolos' names are mis-spelt in that trailer, and at the least, a theater chain would get that right.

If you want to get the complete story behind their flick--revealed in full for the first time--take a look at my new book "Homemade Hollywood" which just came out in January in the US and Feb in the UK from Continuum Books. It's the history of fan films from the 1920s to today, and features a complete chapter devoted to the indie Indy flick; Chris and Eric were heavily involved in their chapter and the results show--it's the chapter that Sci-Fi Channel Magazine singled out in its "A" review in the current issue. You can find the book at your local bookshop or online, and, hey, you can find out more about it at my fan film blog, fancinematoday dot com. [End Plug] Clive

uh no, it's still a stupid comment. i assume this is referring to it being superior to Raiders. that's just ridiculous. i love that they did this, Indy will always be the best to me. but c'mon. though i like how he says "but wait, it's better in most ways." too late brendan! *jumps down throat*
  • I read about this project a while back in Paste Magazine, and I was excited about it then. The chance to be able to see it would be wonderful.
  • Look, please, at me referring to Raiders being superior:

'I prefer their film to the original (though, before you jump down my throat, I can see that the original is superior in most respects)'

    That's what I said. That's what I meant.
  • butteredkiwipie
alright. it's a preference. i'll halfway rescind, but you're still nuts. ok you're not nuts, just crazy. cool people get the reference.
  • I didn't post the trailer, Peter did; I did not refer to the trailer; the trailer has been online much longer than the Vue deal could have been in place.

Therefore, I think you are mistaken in assuming a connection between the trailer and the release.
  • Brad
Way to be an annoying whore Clive. I'm sure it will result in a lot of sales for your book.

    (is /s the new "...Not"?)
  • Maverick
    Have you seen the re-make?

If you haven't, you come across and incredibly stupid to be criticizing someone's opinion of a film that you yourself haven't seen.
  • Thanks, Brad--very sweet of you.

Brendon--You're right--my mistake on thinking they were connected. The BBFC page was a good find, but it's still very unlikely that this is getting a commercial release at multiple theaters as opposed to the usual charity screenings that the Raiders guys have done in the past (and they have done them in Europe, so it's not out of the question).

Talking with them for the book last year, they basically said that it'll never happen because there were no contracts with all the kids who were in it, including the extras, and that they got access to all their locations primarily because they weren't trying to make a profit. Anyone who wanted to release the flick commercially to theaters or home video would have to track down everyone in the cast and crew, plus the property owners, and get stuff signed. And then there's the small concern of Paramount and Lucasfilm. Short of a DVD release timed with the Daniel Clowes movie, if/when it happens, I don't think there's enough incentive at this time for someone to do all that work.
  • hmm
  • Is anyone else not a fan of these films like Son of Rambow and Be Kind Rewind?
  • Hey, I got the full story direct from Eric and Chris---but since I'm a whore now, you'll have to go to my fan film blog, fancinematoday . com, to find out the full story.
  • So he needs to elaborate on EVERY point he makes, now? That will makes his posts damn-near endless.
  • I hope this gets picked up, I'd love the opportunity to check it out.
  • same here. I didn't even know this existed until today.
  • Jeff W.
Be Kind Rewind was unwatchable. I can't believe you'd call it "fantastic" unless you were being incredibly sarcastic. Son of Rambow looked so stupid I never bothered with it.
  • Chilled monkey brains? Awesome!
  • Brendon, the trailer cuts off half way through, though this seems like an impressive feat. I am curious about what ways you think that this film is superior to the original. Such a bold statement demands elaboration.
  • totally awesome midnight movie....
  • who cares, I'm with Reel. OMGGGZZORRZZZ!!!!! H3 LIK3D SOMETHING BETTER THAN RAIDERS!???!!? Oh no! why waste time telling someone that what they like is wrong? Its still Raiders, is that really so bad? c'mon...
  • WOW. i was still wasting all my time trying to skateboard when I was 12. This is beyond impressive.

Do you know more about their stories Brendon? are they in the film business today?
  • They're currently shopping a script called "What The River Takes" that Eric would direct and Chris would produce. Vanity Fair's website did a nice write up with some great pictures last May--Google the movie title and you'll find it easily.
  • Wow, they're like 39 years old now. I wonder if they feel excited, embarrassed - I look back at some old video clips of mine and I'm ready to whip out the lighter fluid and matches.
  • Goose(u let me die)
your reply would have worked better before i already said "alright. its a preference. i'll halfway rescind." as in, "oh ok, i though you meant it was a superior movie, not that you liked it better. gotcha."
  • freemachine
Brendon, you prefer their film to the original? You must be either retarded or British ;)
  • Raiders Fan
Brendon - it comes to light that you must be a complete tit. If you bothered to do any research then you'll know that this film would never get a release on cinema or dvd because of rights issues. As for the BBFC page - it lookscorrect to me now - don't you think this might have been a error from BBFC when creating the page and not Vue's. Dude seriously if your gonna post a story - get the damn facts right !
