Paramount Pictures has released a new tv spot for JJ AbramsStar Trek, featuring a little bit of new footage I haven’t seen before. Watch it after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments.

You can watch the new trailer in 1080p High Definition by clicking this link. Star Trek hits theaters on May 8th 2009.

  • I'm not a Trek fan, but I must say the trailers have caught my attention and I'm interested in seeing the film. The set and the cinemateography are just so beautiful.
  • You might want to give Wrath of Khan a watch. Even non-Trekkies really like that one, from my experience.
  • Looks frakin' Cool.
  • Rosco
Go big screen and it plays fine.
  • gah
I never, ever expected to be as excited as I am. Im a die hard Marvel junkie and I'm looking forward to this more than Wolverine.
  • CYLON
    Fracking sweet!
  • Is it me or does Eric Bana seems to have a very soothing/I want to hear him talk more-voice?
Which could play out nicely as he in the villain. Or not?
  • Hmm OK, that was interesting. All teh other material never really got me interested, but that TV spot might make me consider going. There was something less cheesy about it.
  • Buckle UP!
Gay Emo dialogue, shiny CGI, and flashy explosions brought to you by the geniuses behind Cloverfield M:III and the writers of Transformers, The Island, and M:III.
Looks it was made for 13 year old boys who have ADHD.
  • I am super excited for this movie. Way more than any other big film this summer.
  • So many good ones though. I'm still most excited for Avatar, partly because its still shrouded in mystery, and partly because i'm hoping the 3d blows me away.
  • shadow
that's because Wolverine looks like the same cinematographer from Electra.
  • gah
wow. thats so true. not only cinematrography but costume and set design as well. both made unsuprisingly by 20th Century Fox. Imagine if Marvel Studios or Warner Bros. was doing Wolverine instead.
  • seriously. damn fox for securing these rights.
  • I agree. Looks to me like "Cloverfield" in space with a bit of "The Hills" thrown in for good measure. I hope it's just the trailer, and not the whole movie, but there sure seemed to be a lot of explosions and things blowing up...and teen angst. Plus if all the personal conflict is some crap about Spock being an emo-outcast and Kirk being a "badass" and then having to take command ("Deep Space Nine" first season anyone?) where does Dr. McCoy come in....one of the most essential character to the original trilogy.

I know they are trying to take "Star Trek" in a new direction, but did they even see the old movies/shows? I'm not gonna stand here and defend all the Trek movies and TV shows but they didn't run for a million years and spin-off into a trillion series for no reason....they had a good "Star Trek" formula. And this trailer... but hopefully not the movie...doesn't seem to have it.

I will go to the movie as unbiased as I can be. I love me some explosions and space battles as much as the next dude, but not necessarily mixed in with my "Star Trek." If they do it right, "Wrath of Khan", and Dominion Wars "Deep Space Nine" -esque, well alright, but if this movie is just using Star Trek as a pull to get people to go see a "Transformers" in space minus the Megan Fox...I will be quite disappointed.

Oh and it looks to me as if The Shatt-ster has more charisma and personality in his second chin than Chris Pine ever will muster....but again...it's just a trailer with a bunch of explosions and a bit of emo-talk....I guess I am a bit quick to judge.
  • If this isn't biased I don't know what is.
  • It's a 30-second TV trailer. It's kinda hard to tell if a movie is going to succeed or flop in that amount of time. It's also not for deep analysis, but to leave an image in the mind of watchers.
  • gah
Looks like Star Trek and Terminator will be our tentpoles with brain this summer. And for dumb fun look no further than the two films based on 80's toys.

What the hell is a "Star Trek" formula? The TV show was seminal. The movies, not so much. Also, the cast was fairly aged (in a good way, like wine) when the films were released.

Considering the TV show and the intent of the TV show - to get young people interested in a sci-fi program - the movie looks like it's doing its darndest to do just that.

Until Trekkies establish what it is exactly that defines Star Trek - which I've yet to see in any talkback - you cannot bitch about the movie being similair to what the orignal series was: young people and space travel. The entire canon since has only elevated the Trek mythos above that.

So, establish in brief detail what Star Trek is supposed to be. I always thought it was about science fiction and the drama of relatinons with aliens and interplanetary governments in the future.

As far as I am concerned, as a VERY casual Star Trek fan, this looks to be fun. It also looks like a sci-fi film set in space (which is what I thought Star Trek was all about), which in actuality we see so very little of, yet is such a neat premise in my opinion.
  • gah
seriously i thought the exact same thing. Trekkies should be bowing before this film for rescuing their dead franchise from the the depths of deep space.
  • God yes... this needs to come out already.
  • Mike
This movie looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sooooo there! Cool music too!
  • this looks good big fan of the star trek movies and maybe a lil of voyager. cant wait to see what jj brings to star trek
  • Joe
    Stranger,

You put it best. I could not agree more with you. You have the right idea.
  • I saw this during 24 tonight. Another amazing trailer for this movie. Not quite as epic as Trailer 3 was but still pretty damned good.
  • Hey now, I said that I go into the movie unbiased, so I have made no official "bitching" about this movie yet. All I said was that this trailer suggests to me a vapid movie of blowing-up space ships up and fast action scenes. I also said that I really hope I am wrong.

Now I also said I am a fan of explosions and action, which I definitely am, but to me "Star Trek" was always a little more than that...it always seemed, to me at least, to stand apart from that kind of Sci-Fi a little bit. So if this movie is just eye candy then I am sure it will still be fun and still make boat loads of $$, but it will not feel like a "Star Trek" movie to me.

    To answer your formula question,
I definitely do not talk for trekies, but to me a good "Star Trek" story formula does one of three things:
    1) Explores the "Human Condition."
    2) Explores the meaning of "Life, the Universe and Everything." (= 42 ...duh)
    3) Develops usually meaningful relationships between a cast of tested actors.

Note all the "To Me's" in the above paragraphs.

So again, if this movie is good eye-candy fun...I will still go see it and enjoy it for what it is...but it will not be something to me (again) that Gene would proud to place in the universe he envisioned.
  • This film looks great. The last trailer got me completely hooked. It seems as if J.J Abrams really made a unique yet aesthetically updated and reminiscent of TOS film that will have larger appeal (not only pleasing the Star Trek fans but others brand new to the franchise).

Can't wait until this movie is released, I'll definitely be there on opening night.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I almost never get in line opening weekend, but I will see this film on the very first screen I find. Highly anticipated (and I haven't watched anything Star Trek since reruns of TOS growing up). I just love everything I'm seeing.

The last trailer is as good as a trailer can get.
  • Hmm. I'm not really that much of a Trek fan, but looks promising.

I love Eric Bana, but... the Star Trek villains seem to be a bit hollow. It's like he's sitting in a green, art-directed room that he can't get out of. It reminds me of ST Nemesis - all the villains sit on a dingy-lit and empty bridge, shaking their fists.

I hope JJ is saving all the meaty stuff for the movie.
  • lol, 'forget everything you know' - subtle! :D
  • wow, that did look pretty cool..
  • freemachine
What a way to start off the summer blockbuster season. I'm psyched.
  • What is "emo" supposed to be / mean? Also, since when is putting explosions / action shots NOT been obligitory in "bug" movie trailers? It's a given. Casiono Royal is critiscised for being action light, but the trailer is almost 50% action. Also to try and suggesy Star Trek wasn't "eye candy" when it came out is a bit silly. The short skirts, flashing / beeping bridge and colourful uniforms were very much eye candy, on which good stories were often hung.

There was plenty of action & effects too, notoriously it was having enough of those in that got the series made at all!

Atrailer designed to show, that as well as Being "Trek as sterotyped", talking and human condition) it is also, what is too often forgotten in many, budget hamstrung, Trek movies; excition, sexy, spectacular. To me Trek was all of them, at it's best it was all of them together.
