Some little bird tells me that PG Pornocrat and Slither-meister James Gunn is going out to “indie producers” with the script for a new superhero project. The same little bird also reveals that Rainn Wilson is attached to the script, and that the premise is something like an “f’ed up low rent Watchmen“. This little bird - as has become increasingly common this last two months or so - is the little Twitter bird. Oh, how he sings and sings and sings.

Last night, Rainn Wilson tweeted some details of the script not once, but twice. I’ve just grabbed a screen cap for you, and put it below the break with some more details.

Gunn wrote a spoofy superhero film some years ago. Craig Mazin’s The Specials is one of those mid-figure wonders at Rotten Tomatoes, the kind of film that scores in the 35-60% range but develops a solid knot of a cult following.

From Wilson’s tweets, it seems like Gunn has had this script for some time - see “old/new”. Could it be an old, would-be sequel-come-spin-off to The Specials that Gunn has repurposed? Doesn’t seem impossible, does it?

Or could this be a remake? That one I’m not so sure about. Note how Wilson refers to a “f**d story and character” - this might just be him focusing (egotistically?) on the one character he’d play, but it probably suggests more of a solo-superhero enterprise than the ensemble structure of The Specials. I’d like to think Wilson has his ego securely in check.

James Gunn’s script work on the Scooby Doo films is a little underrated. I’m not making any great claims for a deep value to what he wrote there, but the robotic Rowan and souped-up Scrappy Doo climax is so utterly bizarre it shouldn’t go without some kind of credit. And there are definitely jokes in there too - not exactly sidesplitters, but they are jokes.

But overrated, I’d say, are his other works. Somewhere in between the scorn piled on Scooby and the cult love heaped onto Gunn’s less kiddy-friendly fare is the fair estimation. He can write okay, and he’s obviously somebody who loves his work, but I wouldn’t want to get carried away and credit him with anything too much more than a good sense of humor and a well developed work ethic.

While I rooted through to Wilson via my Twitter feed from Gunn, I did also see this story at CHUD.

I interviewed Rainn Wilson a while back for The Rocker and he told me he was working on a script idea called 'Bonsai Shadow Hands' (or 'Banzai', I never did get around to asking him which it was) about a down-and-out ninja alcohlic ninja living in the San Fernando valley.

Not exactly superhero-y, but it's close. Could be it?
  • this sounds like something he could definitely pull off, but from the sounds of the article, the script is quite old. I doubt that these two projects are one and the same.
  • Bonsai Shadow Hands is a Ninja project Wilson is working on with Jason Reitman.
  • I like Rainn, but i don't see why anyone would describe their project as an F'd up low rent watchmen.

Love or hate watchmen, he seems to be using a poor point of comparison. People who love Watchmen will probably scoff, and people who hated Watchmen can dismiss it.

I almost forgot to mention how much I HATE superhero spoofs.
  • I love Watchmen and this sounds awesome.
  • The first Scooby Doo had some nice camp value. All the Scrappy stuff was real funny, especially when he pisses on Daphne.

Brendon, a favor to ask: Could you please stop burying the lead behind the "continue reading" prompt? While your comments/opinions are always useful and informative, (besides your occasional failure to remember that "its" and "it's" mean two different things), I find myself longing for the days when /film's news was all on the front page, while opinion or additional, circumstantial info, was after the jump.

Unless the recent surge in "continue reading" links is a not-so-subtle effort to increase traffic to your and your sponsors' sites. Which, if true, would be understandable, but should be admitted to your readers. Keep up the good work.
  • i second the motion.
  • There's just a need for context at the start and a limit on how much I am supposed to put above the prompt. But I understand.

The actual meat of the stories, as it were, is in the first two lines and/or headline anyway.

As for where the link comes... well... that's a more subtle thing. Down to how I am asked to format it, and very often it will open the story.

The it's and its thing is only down to a lack of proofreading. I know the difference, but... er... hands up. Many of these stories are written under great time pressure.

And clearly, this doesn't apply to this posting, but several of your other posts.
  • I dont feel that slither is overrated.
    I love that movie, it's a classic!
  • Slither want that bad, but it wasnt that good either.
  • I dont feel that Slither is overrated.
    I love that movie, it's a classic!
  • James Gunn is good looking. damn!
  • I'm piqued. Not sure how to really take this. Like Gunn and not exactly a Rainn fan, but I will follow this with some breathlessness.
  • Yeah I saw this yesterday on Twitter. Sounds interesting, "myself" I enjoyed Slither. It reminded me of his earlier days writing for Troma's very own Lloyd Kaufman and Dawn of The Dead is one of my favorite Re-imaginings.
  • gah
Read Gunn's novel The Toy Collector. I can't reccomend it enough to you all.
  • wilson would be better a s akiller in a horror film. he has that crazed look.
  • james_gunnOkay - SO - from all the weird articles today and messages I can just tell you one thing - @rainnwilson and I are NOT remaking THE SPECIALS. "I just got this on Twitter"
