Where The Wild Things Are

Warner Bros has released a bunch of new photos from Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are in USA Today. Here are some of the details we found in the article:

  • The film expands on “Max’s home life that shed light on why he felt the need to run off to a magical place.”
  • The only words in the teaser trailer (attached to Monsters vs. Aliens) is one single line spoken by the Wild Thing called Carol (seen above), voiced by James Galdofini, welcoming Max to the new world: “I didn’t want to wake you up. But I really want to show you something.”
  • Though the Wild Things are nameless in the book, Jonze decided who was who based on their personalities.
  • Other cast members include: Catherine O’Hara, who voices the Wild Thing with the rhino horn named Judith, Forest Whitaker, who voices the Wild Thing with the big nose, Lauren Ambrose who voices the Wild Thing named KW (shown after the jump in the face to face shot), Chris Cooper who voices Douglas the chicken and Paul Dano who voices Alexander the goat.

Check out more photos after the jump.

Where The Wild Things Are

  • just amazing
  • by far the one movie i want to see most this year.
  • this is much more than what were were seeing in the previous photos. I'm really looking forward to the trailer now.
  • dagreenman18
    Wow.
  • YES!!!! I am so glad this is a live action movie with no CGI, this looks like it could become a great cult hit film for adults and children. I am so excited. the costumes look good, too.
  • agreed.
  • what about the Wild Things? Are they CGI? Because they actually look very real, like they are done in costumes acted by humans (like Star Wars)? Any info about that?
  • what about the Wild Things? Are they CGI? Because they actually look very real, like they are done in costumes acted by humans (like the original Star Wars trilogy)? Any info about that?
  • i think the face is CGI?
  • they're in suits created by the Henson Company (Labyrinth) and the mouth and facial movements are done with CGI....I don't know how much more CGI will be involved in the film but limiting it with the characters was an excellent quality and cost effective move....it may be easier for a director to hand off a bulk of the responsibility to a special effects studio but it's also very lazy (*cough Michael Bay)... creature effects are sometimes cheaper and they age better on film rather than computer effects because it's in camera...I really appreciate people like Guillermo del Toro who keep the practice alive...
  • Ender
Agreed. I don't mind CGI as an augmentation device; just try to keep scenes and characters as "in camera" as possible to being with.
  • Trystan
You do know that there is still a bit of CGI, right? Not much, but a little bit.
  • CGI for what, though? I can't tell from the photos... everything looks very realistic (thank god)
  • It's not like you saw the entire film through these pics. CG is being used for the faces and details on the facial expressions.

There's nothing wrong with CG. The problem is there isn't enough good CG out there.
  • So cool, the teaser sounds amazing! I'm so excited for this film. Are the costumes 'touched up' with CGI? Because the Wild Thing's face seems capable of expressing quite a lot of emotion, just from the stills.
  • Geist
It's the Henson company doing the animatronics and costumes as well as some CGI to touch up the realism on the facial movement I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • B33
    You are correct.

The faces will be completely CGI and will be handled by Framestore. If you are unaware of the company, one of the primary examples of their work is the "baby" in Children of Men (completely CGI). The CGI is expected to be finished around May or so, according to Jonze.
  • huh?
On imdb it has Tom Noonan as Douglas. I'm confused.
  • B33
"IMDb" is not always a reliable source to go by.
  • Ender
But I thought everything on the internet was always 100% right.
  • Can't wait for the teaser.
  • Alex D.
The suits are made by the Jim Henson company, and the faces are animated by the folks who the CGI work on Children Of Men, so you should be pretty excited. Everything else is 100% real. It's all on location in Australia (No sound stage) and the monsters are physical objects in the scene. Only the faces are tweaked digitally so they can express more emotion.
  • Alex D.
t"he folks who DID the CGI work". Silly typographical errors.
  • wow. i didnt know that
  • Instant classic
  • this is getting pretty exciting
  • visually breathtaking sounds about right.
  • I'm stoked!
  • ...and fucking dope too.
  • shadow
From those shots alone, favorite movie of the year.
  • wait, did I mention awesome?

    awesome.
  • I read the book to my nephew earlier today. Can't wait!
  • Yeah I have to agree, it adds this kind of mystique to a film. When looking at the pictures it gave me this Labyrinth type feel and now that I have that info it makes sense why I did.
  • I think some of the facial expressions ares CG, the rest of the creature is real though.
  • The costumes are real, but the faces are CGI. I saw a screening in December 2006 and none of the digital effects were done. These are definitely new CGI faces.
  • The original faces were 100% static-- no animatronics. So all emotion has to be done CGI.
  • God I can't wait for this. Their faces looked better than I ever could have hoped. I'm most curious about the score now. The rough was cut to Arcade Fire songs and it worked so beautifully. I wonder how Karen O's soundtrack will compare.
  • Neon Noodle
I loved the books.. I will be seeing this as soon as I can.
  • These pictures are simply fascinating! I'll be very attentive on Friday to catch the trailer.
  • Looks brilliant, can't wait to catch the Sunday matinee of Monsters vs. Aliens
  • im pretty sure the faces are CGI, similar to Benjamin button im guessing
  • Wow, I can't wait to see this trailer. Is it just me, or has it been a long time since we've heard anything from this movie? I guess I'm happy this is finally coming out this year.
  • I'm so damn excited for this, can't wait till Friday...so so excited.
  • It looks sooo awesome
Can't wait for the trailer (I'm surprised a bit though that they put the trailer with MvA, as Spike Jonze everytime mentions the movie is not that much kid-friendly)
  • Polydorff
Like it, but the eyes look lifeless and fake. If he set out to create a real world, he still has to work on those eyes. Maybe hire some guys from Benjamin Button?
  • Amazing you could tell that from STILL photos.
  • CG will be here to stay. And CG is used in this film. And that Welles quote is so far off that it has nothing to do with what you're saying about CG. If anything, CG does allow artists to create things that can't be done by hand or with a camera.

You anti-CG folk need to let it go and realize that there is and are some amazing CG teams out there. Not many. But they exist.
  • I have to say that if those faces are CG, they look really good.
  • this will be The Neverending Story of the 00ss
  • Yeah, let's get rid of visual effects and actually send a group of astronauts to the sun to reignite it and kill them off in the process.

Or how about eliminating all the effects in movies like Wall•E making it look bland and flat?

Or how about destroying bridges and sinking large ships, sending hundreds to the after life?

Yeah, lets get rid of visual effects. What's the benefit?
