rodriguez grindhouse

Robert Rodriguez has been chatting it up at SXSW and CinemaBlend has a few details direct from the filmmaker’s mouth. First off, Robert says that he always tells people that Sin City 2 is “right around the corner, because that’s what everybody wants to hear” but admits that “It might be a long corner.” I’m pretty convinced that a sequel won’t happen until Miller has no other film options, and is forced to return to the franchise.

Robert went on to insist that the long talked about feature length version of Machete will happen, and that he’s “got the script” and is “ready to go”. I’ll believe it when I see it.

The most interesting quote to leave Rodriguez’s mouth was in regards to his next project Neveracker, the sci-fi action film that was announced in February — “I used to say it was, it’s kind of like Blade Runner, but that was Blade Walker. This is Blade Runner.” Wow, just Wow. I’m pretty sure he didn’t intend to slam Blade Runner, but those are strong words. If this film comes out and is another Spy Kids, he’ll also be eating them.

he is writing a check he cannot possibly hope to cash. woe unto the director who takes a classic and uses it as a verbal set piece. i have seen almost every one of robert's movies and liked most of them... a better comparison would have been: "this will be 'the chronicles of riddick'. that was the bedtime story of riddick. this will be a chronicle."

seriously, know your level of ability.
  • ...Spy Kids was great.
  • no. please NO Sin City 2, leave it at that alright?
  • bubba
Robert's really kind of gone downhill the past year or so. As and ardent fan of most of his stuff (his DVD commentaries are epic for no-budget filmmakers, in case you don't know...check 'em out, seriously) I blame his divorce from his first wife.

He's really kind of lost his touch in some ways.
  • JPDyno
I dont necessarily think he means its going to be better than bladerunner. It sounds to me like he is saying its similar in feel but a faster pace / more action. Thats what i took from it anyway
  • theuglyspirit
Which basically isn't at all like Blade Runner.

    I
  • God damn it, when are we gonna get a Machete/Thanksgiving double feature? I know that will never happen, but I can dream can't I?
  • that would be epic all the right ways.
  • YEEZ
  • Jebus
Oh please Peter, trying to tie this comment to his work on Spy Kids is like comparing a lunatic to a pissed man with goals. The comparison holds no water. The metrics for critique have to be different because their aims are completely different.

Somebody piss in your cereal this morning?
  • Why not? There are more stories from the comics to tell, the only difference is that they didn't get picked for the first film. I don't consider that exploitation of the material and eagerly await the sequel.
  • Perhaps it has to do with the fact the first movie, while beautiful visually, sucked in every other way. I'm going to get a thumbs down on this, so I'm just going to say it, Saw sucks & 300 sucks.
  • Time for Robert to shut up and put up. It's been a while since we've seen anything decent from the man, he seems far from his best form. Planet Terror was horrid and all these projects in limbo... sounds like he has no idea. Just kick our asses on the screen already!
  • _spinster_
him and tarrentino should make another Grindhouse movie, because the first one was the bomb
  • dgdgdg
Sin City has fallen out of the zeitgeist. I used to be big fan of his but lately he seems to be floundering in a bunch of "projects". Watchmen and The Spirit are doing it no favors in terms of potential box office either.
  • Palmer
I demand a proof of concept for Machete that's not the Grindhouse trailer.
  • Intrinsic
yes, but will he use a giant machete to cut his words first?
  • so he's just 'procrastinating' all of his projects? ha, i think we all know what that's like.
  • I am with you there, except for one small disagreement. Rodriguez has never been great, he is the king of mediocre. His best films (maybe Desperado?, OUTIM?) still were about 7/10's range
  • I never used the word 'great'. I said he was far from his best form - and while I can relate that you feel his best is mediocre, perhaps you underestimate gems like El Mariachi? No denying the man is talented -- there has just been no proof of what he can really do since Sin City.
  • Look, I like Blade Runner and recognize all the important accomplishments it yielded.

But it is painfully long and slow. "Blade Walker" is an absolutely legitimate critique of it.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I love Blade Runner, but have no problem agreeing that it is a slow-paced film. I'm glad Rodriguez is aiming high. Now, I just hope he gets back to work. I think he will make some good sci-fi. He's got the right sensibility for it.
  • freemachine
I think the pacing in Blade Runner was just perfect for the story. It's Ridley Scott after all, not Tony. I think that people have been corrupted by quick editing and all the other techniques designed to give more recent films a hyper-kinetic pacing. Compare Scott's Alien with Cameron's Aliens. The first film appears to drag compared to the insane action in the second. On that note, I enjoyed the pacing of Alien 3 because they slowed it down so that you could soak up the atmosphere.
  • freemachine
I think someone needs to update Rodriquez's IMDb page, because it shows Sin City 2 as in pre-production and, oddly enough, Sin City 3 as IN PRODUCTION!
  • Where's my MADMAN adaptation? Not the TV show but the Mike Allred comic!
  • gah
he'll get to it eventually...or someone else will. Hollywoods drunk on comic properties.
  • Robert Rodriguez doesn't have enough talent to make "Blade Paraplegic" and whether he intended to slam "Blade Runner" or not, him even mentioning his film and Ridley Scott's film in the same breath is a crime.
  • Lawrence
    Planet Terror 2 please.
  • Is it just me or is Neveracker a really shitty name?
  • freemachine
True, Fincher's film lacked "space", but it made up for it with a claustrophobic and gritty prison atmosphere. Also, it was nice to see people without weapons being picked off by a single alien, a dog-alien hybrid at that.
  • ALIEN RESSURECTION IS THE MOST AWESOME MOVIE EVER.

    /thread
  • It kind of slipped by me but yeah, now that I thin =k about it that name is ridiculous.
  • He has the script and is ready to go... Hurry up already
  • Nic
Until Mickey Rourke decides he'll play Marv again (and I don't think that's likley to happen) SIn City 2 is a no go, I think.
  • BlackjackJohnson
Mickey almost ruled out that he'll be part of another Sin City. although he was the most amazing part of the entire film (talk about comeback), it is more likely that the second installment will focus on Dwight's (Owen) backstory and his former love affair (I think it's vol. 2 or 3 in the comics).
  • Maybe Miller will just be directing sin city 2 by himself. He has owns every page and has every right to. He's proved what a fabulously major director he is. What the hell does he need rodriguez for?
    /sarcasm

Double the budget and give it to rob rod. Lets see what happens when he has 120 million and doesn't have to pinch pennies, course he still would anyway, and the flick would be so AMAZING. Sin city 2 would more than make back that kind of bank roll.
  • gah
"I’m pretty convinced that a sequel won’t happen until Miller has no other film options, and is forced to return to the franchise."

So...basically about a year from now after Buck Rogers is released. We all know Miller will go back to the well after his follow up directoral effort is as much as an abortion as his first one was. And don't even get me started on his recent comics work. Miller lost his mind...and his talent too apparently. He can't even draw well anymore.
  • Look, I like Blade Runner and recognize all the important accomplishments it yielded but that movie -- in 2009 or not -- is painfully long and slow. "Blade Walker" is an absolutely legitimate critique of it and I look forward to Rodriguez's more entertaining take on that sort of story.

And Rodriguez may get beef for Spy Kids but dude banked his own production house and several subsequent films with those flicks. Take your potshots but he's got carte blanche to make his own movies from here on out because of Spy Kids and what that did for him, as a producer.

P.S., all the "so he's not doing anything?" comments... uh, he's in post on another kids' feature right now (Shorts).
  • Weyland_Yutani
Everyone at WY agrees with your thoughts on the Alien films. While there is considerable debate here concerning how each of the directors (Scott, Cameron, Fincher, Jeunet) contributed to considerable P. R. issues for the company, there is very little debate concerning the awesome contrast in the pacing of the films. Although WY is partial to the Ridley Scott classic, it should be noted that Cameron managed to give a clinic in action filmmaking with his efforts in the sequel. Fincher managed a nice tone and pace, but was hindered by the lack of "space."
  • I was always under the impression that 'Machete' had been in production for a while? :( Oh well, I'm sure it will be released 'eventually' like 'Sin City 2'. Thing is, in the film industry, eventually, can be a very long time for both films. We need some Danny Trejo!
  • I'd rather see Machete or Sin City 2 over a possible deprecation of Blade Runner. I thought his whole thing was to shoot fast. What is taking these movies so long?
  • Wow I had no idea how far the fanboy-ism stretched! You guys (for the majority) speak as if you are experts on the subject instead of informed (be it well or mis) fans....Who here could do any better? In my opinion if it matters Sin City was a cinematic master piece! Blade Runner while it was an excellent movie and definitely a favorite of mine is dated! It's the equivalent of Moby Dick, you respect it for what it is but at what point to we let go of it's balls and allow for some comparison to your precious holy grail of a film...you sound like trekkies vs. Star Wars fans....honestly. Now is the time for progress and breaking previouly set bench marks. If there will never be anything better why do anything at all? I've seen great work and foresee great potential in this guy and I'd like to see someone take on and surpass a Blade Runner style epic! Just my thoughts!
  • And By the way....I can't wait for a Sin City sequal gotdammit! That's how I found this page in the first place! And Machete is gonna be fuckin awesome! Like Desperado on steroids! Lay Off Miller & Rodriguez!
