Kevin Smith Talks About A Couple of Dicks

a couple of dicks

If you haven’t yet listened to the Special Watchmen Review Edition of /Filmcast, you should do so now. Kevin Smith joined the crew and to geek out in depth about the “unfilmable” comic book adaptation. Smith’s next film, A Couple of Dicks, will be his first feature film based on a screenplay that he also didn’t write. Our conversation with Smith was “Dicks”-less, but Lee Stranahan recently sat down with Smith and was able to get him to talk about the upcoming action cop comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The script is “definitely an R-Rated Film” with “salty language in it, but not a Hard R”
  • Warner Bros was considering making it as a PG-13 movie (which might explain the brief “A Couple of Cops” title change) but Willis, Morgan, Smith and WB head Jeff Robinov decided it would be better as an R-Rated comedy
  • “It meant a lot of us had to give up a bunch of our salary to make this movie, that’s how passionate we are about the flick.”
  • “It just feels like a grown up movie for me”
  • “You could go after the Gran Torino audience with this movie, and that is a totally different audience than I’ve ever played to.”
  • “The budget of the movie is NOT huge.”
  • “For anyone who says ‘He just sold out, he’s just going for the buck — I’m making less to make this movie than I did on Dogma, which is a movie I made 10 years ago and didn’t make a lot of money.”
  • “That’s the way I think the business should be run. Everyone should take the risk and then if it pans out, we all get rich.”
  • Smith says Robinov hired him because this is a movie about “two dudes talking to each other” and his visual chops are now “up to snuff”
  • “There are some action sequences in it. On the grand scale of things, not action sequences on the scale of Zack Snyder composes. Butthere are action sequences which are a little more than I’ve composed.”

  • i have all the faith in the world for Kevin Smith and this project. It will be good, and hopefully he makes his money this time.
  • I like that he is Directing something he didn't write.. should be good.
  • I don't think Smith would direct a movie he didn't write unless the script was very good. Does anybody know anything about the screenwriters?
  • Palmer
Well, even if it's not a scripted movie of his I hope there's no back and forth with the always prudish MPAA to cut stuff out of the film.
  • joshi38
I doubt it, they're going for an R and Smith said it's not a hard R, so there's probably no risk of getting an NC-17. And even if they did, Smith has enough experience with the MPAA to be able to handle it.

"So what is A Couple of Dicks about? Written by Robb and Marc Cullen, and featured on the 2008 Black List (a Hollywood insider list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year), "

Smith has certainly grown as a film maker, Zach and Miri Make a Porno has proved that, and since I doubt WB will screw up when it comes to marketing "A Couple of Dicks", he should be in for a decent success here.

I also love the fact that Smith is finally able to work with Willis in a directorial capacity after their short history (re. the Evenings With).
  • don't forget those few scenes they had together in "Live Free or Die Hard".
  • joshi38
I kind of meant that, (in the last Evening With, he talks about his time on Die Hard 4 and how afterwards Willis contacted him and suggested that Smith write a movie for him, but Smith knew then that Willis likely wouldn't want to be in a film of Smiths caliber, also Smith wanted Willis as the cameo in Jersey Girl and couldn't get him, so I find it nice that they can now work together like this).
  • ahh, ok. i've never seen the "An Evening With.." shows (though i really want to). that makes sense then. tanks for clarifying.
  • Smith is putting himself out there directing a film from someone else's script and with a studio outside of Miramax/TWC. How exactly is that "selling out?" *Rolls eyes*

It's good that he's doing this, and will ultimately help him in the long run. Looking forward to this one.
  • umm, Kevin Smith, NOBODY thinks you're a sell-out for making this film.
  • Good to see him stepping out of the Miramax/TWC something tells me those guys are proabably great to work with in that they let the director control the project but I'm not sure they know how to sell a Kevin Smith project(or any movie god sake). As proven by Zack and Miri, how does that film do so poorly when everything else Seth Rogan touches turns to gold? This Couple of Dicks projects looks very promising.
  • Because everything The Weinstein Company touches turns to shit.
  • Tracy Morgan is hilarous. If acts anything like he does on 30 rock, then I'll see this twice.
  • Absolutely, I want to see him in roles other than himself on 30 Rock. Fun Cooker, how goddam funny was that? I'm going to Hulu to watch some Brian Fellows now.

There are 3 separate 'Evening With' DVD's, all equating to about 12 hours of just Kevin Smith telling hilarious stories and I can't recommend them enough. You should really try to check them out.
  • Unfortunately, the third one kinda blows. He talks too long and ends up only answering like three questions...kind of a disappointment. But overall, yes, the 'Evening With...'s are great.

  • Glad to see Tracy Morgan being used by some talented people outside of Tina Fey. Those two cast in a buddy cop movie almost seems like its too good to be true. But even if it weren't those two in the roles I'd see it because its Kevin Smith and I always see his films in theaters. Even Jersey Girl despite being the only male in attendance. Keeping the "R" rating is also welcomed news.

I AM WORKING ACROSS THE STREET FROM KAUFMAN STUDIOS WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE THE FILM AND WOULD LIKE VERY MUCH TO MEET BRUCE WILLIS. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT? I AM DOING THE MASONRY WORK ON THE BUILDING.

I think this movie will be huge. The problem is that "Kevin Smith" movies appeal exclusively to Kevein Smith fans. This could as big as "The Hangover" if is funny as that movie.

They are filming it 10 blocks away from where I live and I can't PARK MY FRIGGIN CAR. Hehehehe, kidding. Looks like a lot of fun.
