First Look: Pixar’s Partly Cloudy

Partly Cloudy

Pixar has sent us the official plot synopsis for Pixar’s next short film, Partly Cloudy, the directorial debut of storyboard artist and animator Peter Sohn (he also provided the voice of Emile in Ratatouille). Also, AWN has gotten their hands on the first official photo from the short, which can be seen above. And I must say, it looks quite beautiful.

Directed by Peter Sohn, Produced by Kevin Reher. “Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating “dangerous” babies. Crocodiles, porcupines, rams and more–Gus’s beloved creations are works of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork partner, Peck. As Gus’s creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck’s job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend’s fiery temperament?”

Partly Cloudy will release with Up on May 29th, 2009.

Holy Crap! Pixar's animation gets more and more realistic every year!

Which is exactly why my blood boils when I think of how WALL-E got shut-out at this year's Annies.
  • Thomas
yup. it's all cool though, Wall-E got the Oscar. Besides, it's obvious to anybody who is of rational mind that this years annies was an inside job. with backstage politics run amock. Obviously, many among the voters (which are dominated by those affiliated with Dreamworks Ani.) are suffering from a malignant case of Pixar envy, and finally has had enough. Rather than being envious, they should, I don't know, maybe, GET BETTER AT WHAT THEY DO, so maybe they too can reap accolades like Pixar does year in year out. When the competition resorts to hating on you instead of stepping their game up, you know you have them beat and that they pretty much threw in the towel.

You guys do realize, pixar could do super hyper "realistic" whenever they want. That is not the point of animation. We have video cameras. The idea with animation is to tell a great story, and have believable characters, not realistic, believable. There is a difference.
  • Heath
Pixar covers all the bases, whether their films are of the "cartoony look" or "realistic look", the common thread is that their films have great stories with endearing characters that live on for years after their debut on the big screen. The love story in Wall-E was far more believable than any romance last year and in recent memory.

If that really is concept art, it is probably a painting, not a rendering.
  • jerry seinfeld
actually, they're not going for realism... but their films are looking better and better, for sure....
  • pixar is one of the few companies that continues to out-create and outperform itself. they set the bar high, and manage to push it even further every year.

Partly Cloudy should will be excellent.
  • 100% agreed, it's hard not to love all their work and I'm sure this will be more visually stunning than ever as they continue to push the boundaries of CG (and as someone with a bit of CG experience myself, I can tell you that they're doing amazing pioneering work)

  • it's Pixar, expected nothing less. Amazing.

Cloud babies? Well...guess that's another layer to add when telling a child where babies come from. Though...what if they ask where clouds come from?! Either way I have high hopes for this short.
  • wonder which cloud makes steve jobs
  • It got thin and faded away... what, too soon?
  • freemachine
    You sick bastard. (-1)
  • Not a very good first look...
  • man, the crew at Pixar has got to be the most original and creative people on the planet. how do they come up w/ this stuff?
  • Marijuana. Or they could just be a lot more creative than everyone else.
  • Sues
If this plot description is anything like the one released about Presto, almost the entire paragraph is going to be in the first minute or so of setup, and then the last two sentences is what will turn out to be the meat of it. Which makes me much more optimistic about this, because as deep as my love for Pixar runs, the first description of Partly Cloudy sounded a little too cute for me, but if it's as dangerous as it sounds like it has the potential to be then I'm excited.

    And that character-cloud is friggin' gorgeous. I can't believe it's a short.
  • Kenneth
Holy guacamole. Y'know how sometimes you see faces in the clouds? Well this time I didn't until Sues' comment. Wow. That's brilliantly cool. I'm extremely excited for this short. I think there are only one or two Pixar shorts that I don't care for, and they are still better than anything else produced!
  • This looks like a fun concept that Pixar will do a good job with.
  • That pic looks more like concept art, rather than an actual CG render...but I might be mistaken, we won't know until there is a clip of the short.
  • Pete the Fed
Saw the short today before Up. It was great animation, and funny too.
  • raymondo
