Drew Barrymore might not be a lock to direct the third Twilight film. THR is reporting that Guillermo Del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona is now rumored to be one of the top finalists to direct The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse. But then again, reps are saying that they are still looking at a number of candidates. James Mangol had been previously rumored to be in talks, and earlier today Twilight fansites were claiming that New Moon director Chris Weitz’s brother Paul Weitz might direct the third film.

While I was a huge fan of Bayona’s The Orphanage, I would much rather see him make his American debut with something more original and a property that could better test his skills. The filmmaker is also signed on to direct an adaptation of the David Moody novel Hater for Universal. I still like the idea of Summit hiring a woman filmmaker for the project as the source material is so female-targeted in nature.

Discuss: Who should Summit hire to direct Eclipse?

Disclaimer: The mock logo above was created by me, and is not official movie art.

  • someone i don't care about. Bayona was great in the Orphanage, and i'd rather him make something that doesn't suck for his American debut.

    slowest news week ever
  • Peter, you took the time to create a Twilight logo mock-up? Come on.. That's beyond pathetic.

I think it looks pretty cool :p

yeah imagine that making appropriate graphics to go along with a story. what a loser!

why don't you get a job! oh wait!
  • Yeah, I think most /film readers will agree that Eclipse and the Twilight series as a whole is a joke... However, Juan Antonio Bayona is a protege of one of my favorite directors in Del Toro, so I am glad to see that his first directorial debut in the US is a high-profile film like this one.
  • gah
Or maybe since Del Toro is busy for the next 10 years with projects, he could take over the Hellboy series. Yeah, that would be much better than this crap.
  • It's still a big franchise.
  • Though the director deserves something better I think if he chose to direct Eclipse he would have a challenge ahead of him with the rushed production schedule. This book is my favorite of the bunch and has a werewolf/vampire fight scene, which if done right, could be awesome. All the same Summit has chosen to rush these movies like fast food, so I'm not sure even a credible director could do something with them.
  • Could he save the Twilight films from being just crap?

My favorite book from the series in Eclipse and having a serious director that can actually bring darkness into the film would be something that could bring a different experience to all audiences, not only fans.

(Yeah yeah, guys just shoot me right now! As a woman I can't help to like the books. Still, I wouldn't trade my X-Men for anything)
  • i applaud your increasing photoshop skills over the years, peter.
  • In response to the title of this story: No.
  • Hey Peter, you wrote above that Paul Weitz might return for Eclipse, but it should say he may direct Eclipse. Chris Weitz is directing New Moon, Paul is his brother. :)

Bayona directing a piece of shit like this? Please God, no. Please, please no.
  • I'm not religious, but I will be praying tonight that this does not happen.
  • i actually wouldn't mind if it was drew. but that is just me...
  • this will be direct to DVD right? or is this a Disney channel original movie?
  • Why would he waste his talents on obvious shit?
  • gah
I love that they're banking on kids not losing interest in this series. Not every franchise is going to have Harry Potter stamina, especially considering this one is not very well written. Potter had legs because the story was somewhat consistantly solid. This seems like just a fad that will blow over by the time a third is even concieved. Not to mention it seems like the stars aren't too keen on returning for sequels now that other, better career opportunites have been opened up for them.

Yeah, this series is marketed toward EMOs, and I'd like to think that at some point those kids grow out of that phase. Yes, the Potter films have stamina because: 1) they are great; and 2) they have appeal to a larger audience that spans all ages. I foresee future adaptations of Twilight being released straight to DVD.
  • I think it looks good, too lol
  • Oh God, I solemnly swore to go to whatever movie Bayona directed next. I also swore to never see any of the Twilight movies. So either way it looks like my left testicle is out of luck.
  • MarkGoug
I did the exact same thing!!! WHAT DO WE DO BRO?!
  • I hope Bayona passes this and goes on to something with alot more substance...
