the pacific

Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and from the creators of “Band of Brothers”, The Pacific is a a 10-part HBO mini-series which tells the intertwined stories of three Marines, Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda), during America’s battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.

Produced on a budget of more $150 million, and shot on location in Australia, the series follows (from an early press release) “The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.”

/Film reader Donovan has sent me a promotional trailer for the miniseries, which has no announced release date but is expected to air in late 2009/early 2010. Watch it after the jump, and as always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Carl Franklin (HBO’s “Rome”), Jeremy Podeswa (HBO’s “Six Feet Under”), Tony To (HBO’s “Band of Brothers”), Tim Van Patten (HBO’s “The Sopranos”) and Graham Yost (HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon”) will direct episodes. Writers and additional directors will be announced as they are confirmed.

In addition to James Badge Dale (”The Departed”), Joe Mazzello (”Without a Trace”) and Jon Seda (”Kevin Hill”), actors featured in THE PACIFIC include (in alphabetical order) Akos Armont, Jon Bernthal (”The Office”), Joshua Biton (”National Treasure”), Adam Booth (”Doctors”), Simon Bossell (”Hotel de Love”), Laurence Breuls (”Ghost Rider”), Tom Budge (”Last Train to Freo”), Linda Cropper (”McLeod’s Daughters”), Brendan Fletcher (”Tideland”), Eamon Farren (”The Outsider”), Leon Ford (HBO’s “Tsunami: The Aftermath”), Daniel Frederiksen (”Stingers”), Scott Gibson (”Lucky Number Slevin”), Joshua Helman, Ashton Holmes (”A History of Violence”), Andrew Lees, Rami Malek (”The War at Home”), Martin McCann (”Closing the Ring”), Ian Meadows (”Home and Away”), Toby Moore (”Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback”), Rohan Nichol (”All Saints”), Henry Nixon (”Happy Feet”), Keith Nobbs (”The Black Donnellys”), Annie Parisse (”Law & Order”), Sam Parsonson (”Love My Way”), Jacob Pitts (”The Novice”), Rupert Reid (”The Matrix Reloaded”), Mitch Ryan, William Sadler (”The Shawshank Redemption”), Gary Sweet (”Down in Splendor”), Anna Torv (”Young Lions”), Sandy Winton (”Two Twisted”), Dylan Young and Ashley Zukerman. Additional actors will be announced as they are confirmed.

THE PACIFIC is based on the books “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene Sledge, which was hailed by historian Paul Fussell as “one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war,” and “Helmet for My Pillow,” by Robert Leckie (recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Annual Award), as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book “Band of Brothers”), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

If it can be anywhere near as good as Band of Brothers than it will definitely be worth watching.
  • I second that
  • looks pretty good. i will seed it
did anyone saw 24 yet ? i heard it was pretty awesome
  • If Joseph Mazzello (I'm sorry, "Joe" Mazzello) isn't being attacked by dinosaurs or AIDS, I want no part of it.
  • There was a battle that saved Australia? Who knew...

No but seriously, this looks frickin' awesome. I LOVED Band of Brothers, so anything Spielberg and WWII, I am there!
  • I don't know if I'm for anything Spielberg...but if they're using people that were behind Band of Brothers then I'm on board
  • jenny
no they are using all new people. the movie is all about three fellows in the 10 week series who became close fighting together. read the book the old breed you wont be bored
  • If this is half as good as Band of Brother it'll be another blu-ray buy of mine. I don't know if anything can compare to the story of E Company/101st Airborn and the european theatre, but I'll definitely give it a look.
  • Totally agree, still own the 6-disc DVD Steel case and will get it on blu as well.
Like a lot of folks are saying, if Pacific even is half as good it still will be a series worth watching and owning.
  • Looks great, I'll be watching.
  • It'll probably be roughly one billion times better than Australia.
  • What is not better than Australia?
  • Eh, I give it a hard time but the truth is that many, many films are worse.
  • Palmer
I'm a big fan of Band of Brothers so I'll take a look at this when it airs. Though have you noticed that not a lot of World War II films and show focus on the Pacific theater of the war? Sure you films like Letters from Iwo Jima and Sands of Iwo Jima, but there's a lot more films about the European theater of the war. Not sure about the African theater.

explain to me why it says in big letters "FILMED IN AUSTRAILIA" in the trailer. It says the series follows, "the extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.”

Where does down under fit into this?

The Location for all of the areas you mentioned were re-created just out of Melbourne and up at Port Douglas in Australia. Can't wait to see the DVD release with behind the scenes footage, amazing and so much work went into them, (i should know, i was there the first day we broke ground) For many reasons trying to film in some of those locations would be almost impossible, crew and cast housing, transport etc would have cost 5 times as much if not more, as well as possible issues respect for those who died there. However most of the locations used in Melbourne are the the very same as when the soldiers and marines were here before being shipped out and returning for R&R. Australia had a huge part in both the war and the creation of this series.
  • I have to work to take Spielberg films seriously, though, despite his excellent filmmaking (production, direction, score, most casting), due to his Leftwing politics. But I'll watch this.
  • Oh, looks like I hit a nerve, I've failed to bow before a Leftwing filmmaker, made the Left a tad angry accordingly.

As to the remark that follows mine, I'll go ahead and respnd now to that: a filmmaker's perspective is what's affected by that filmmaker's perspective, it's not the viewer's politics that somehow "leaps into" (or onto) a screen, but that of he or she who makes the film.

After the six denigrations of my earlier supportive remark above, however, I'm now convinced the series is to be avoided .

Therefore, won't be watching this Series - waiting for Spielberg to direct "Che, The Fourth Sequel, This Time with Fidel"

I'd love to see Speilberg try something new instead of doing WWII, aliens, Indiana Jones and whatever else worked for him a long time ago.
  • He'll probably gush next over how great Fidel treated him when he visited Cuba last.
  • The new Indy was trying to be a crossover of it all.
Next We'll Have Indiana Jones 5: Saving Private Spock
  • Band of Brothers was brilliant film making, so count me in. So ready for this.
  • Palmer
Maybe because the preview was first shown in Australia and it added that for national pride?
  • Yeah has the 7 watermark, and a good way to get Australians to watch something is play up the Australian angle.

Wow...Just checked the IMDB page for this. Bill Sadler as the legendary Chesty Puller? Uh, I don't think so!
Joe Mazzello as the less legendary Eugene "Percy" Sledge? Yikes...Was the Chekov kid from the new Star Trek not available?
And finally as the almost immortal John Basilone, Jon Seda?

I don't think this will work on the realism level...maybe that's why the Aussies got the trailer.
  • It does not seem to matter than "this will (not) work on the realism level" except to people who rspect/revere our military and military service. The only people today who like this type of unreality are the gullible and easily misled.

I'd have seen this Series had I not revisited this site and read the negative demarking of my relatively supportive, entrusting first comment here. I now anticipate more Leftwing propaganda from this Series and about it, so , thanks you Leftwingers, you saved me a few hours I would have wasted watching this.
  • And, sorry, I rated your remark down when i wanted to rate it up (@ BobaFet)
  • BobaFett
THERE AIN'T NO GD WAY BILL SADLER CAN BE CHESTY PULLER!!! For those of you not familiar, Imagine Jack Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men", but about 15 years younger.
  • Palmer
Anyone having problems with the trailer? It cuts off at the 56 second mark for me.
  • Jorge
I've read Sledge's book, and it was really terrific.
  • I was an extra in this film...just missed out on being selected to do all the "battlefield" scenes..ended up being a civillian on a train and at a train station. Met Joe Mazzello aswell...we discussed the texture of hot chocolate being served. lol.

Oh please yes! I loved BoB and I own the metal case (series). If they do as good of a job as BoB this will be awesome. I hope they have WWII Pacific Theater veterans to interview as well. I work for a Professor who served in the Pacific as a US Marine Coreman and he has so many incredible stories to tell. Most of them are frightening as hell...

He's a bad ass, even at age 85.
  • I own the metal case as well. A must own series.
  • No shit. WWII apparently lasted longer in film than in history.
  • Danny
    I second that
  • I'm still a very big fan of Band of Brothers so I guess it's safe to say that I will definitively enjoy this! IMO, BoB is the best war movie/series ever made.
  • Jordan
    David Nutter FTW!
  • this sounds great. Band of Brothers was absolutely amazing, and it still has the same effect every time i watch it.

even if this were only 1/2 as good as Band, it would still be an excellent mini-series.
  • Right you are sir.
  • The trailer obviously aired in Australia (based on the Voice Over) and we have an incredibly annoying tendency to freak out over anything that has anything to do with us. Even if it doesn't* (non of the Battles mentioned in Peter's synopsis have anything to do with Australia).

    *See Sam Worthington/Batman story.
  • I totally agree, it annoys me how the media have to constantly shout at people that "ohhhh this was filmed here" or "this celebrity talked about Australia".

This trailer specifically annoys me, first of all because I don't like the voice of that channel 7 guy, secondly - and more importantly - because there is no need to ham up the "Australian" angle of the story, the show MAY mention our country but it is NOT about it. Why do they need to do this?

Looks good though, can't wait to watch it.
  • Joe Mazello?!?!? Oh my god that's the boy from Jurassic Park!!! I had no idea he was still acting.
  • $150 mil for a TV series??? What a joke.
  • Rogoski
Its essentially a 10 hour long movie so.... 150 mill is kinda nothing

considering spiderman 3 wasted a half billion dollars for 2 hours of film
  • The key word here is "wasted".
  • mmm the trailer does look good.
  • Cool, Call of Duty 5 level: "Little Resistance".

I wonder if they can get the Ray Gun.

(+1 if you know what I'm talking about)
  • All I can say is... FINALLY!

I have been waiting for a long time for this. Now my life is complete.
  • Boat of Brothers FTW. Also, how bad would that suck to have to land on a beachhead like that?
  • Von Bilka
What the hell do politics have to do with his filmmaking? The liberal undertones in Jurassic Park were just too much for your American heart to deal with?
I can't stand when people let random crap like that affect their judgement of entertainment. I swear I feel like there are like 23 or 24 people left in the world that take a film for it's entertainment value instead of the actors religious alignment or directors political stance. It gives me diarrhea. Shitloads of it.
