star wars live action tv series

For the last two years, George Lucas has been developing a live-action Star Wars television series. I think it was originally stated that they would not begin production until they had the first 50 scripts in hand, and I’ve heard about a bunch of screenwriters around Hollywood have been working on the series. 2009 was originally announced as the show’s targeted premiere (see the sign above), but Lucasfilm has since been quoted as saying 2010, and later 2011. With a lack of news leaking, I was beginning to believe that it might never actually happen. But MTV reports that casting is already underway. Rose Byrne, who played Dorme in Attack of the Clones, let it slip at the Knowing junket that a lot of her friends have been auditioning for the series.

Set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the show has been described by Lucas as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space”. Told from the perspective of minor characters from the Star Wars galaxy (rumored to be a family in the underworld), the darker, grittier, more character-based story might also feature appearances and cameos from several major Star Wars characters, but not the heavy like Darth Vader. And now that the show has entered the casting stage, I’m sure we’ll start to learn more about the story and the characters.

  • Now this is exciting! I've been waiting for this and I know most of us always wanted to know what happened between Anatkin becoming Darth Vader and Luke and Princess Leia Organa being introduced to us. Very Excited

I hope even Rose Byrne have been auditioning!
  • Bart-Zina
This is hopefully do for us what the prequal trilogy was supposed to do. Hopefully...
  • bobba fett FTW. It would be cool if they made him the main story about him.
  • Could this be a return to form for this franchise? What if it follows Luke's estranged Child and baby mama. Keeping with the whole Daddy issues, little Luke could grow up on the dark side, and find his only goal in life is to find and kill his father. Just think of the shenanigans he could get into.
  • while there would be plenty of material to use if they went with that, it will never be able to happen. Lucas has STRICT continuity rules for anything Star Wars where nothing can contradict something that has already been set in place and if a contradiction does slip through, then it must be rectified/explained away in short order. Also, this doesn’t only apply to the movies. It includes TV, books, comics, video games, etc. etc.

Hmm. Pretty impossible since Luke would be a child during this series and no older than a teenager by the end of it. Though I guess your cynicism isn't really concerned with chronological accuracy.
  • oh no, please just don't let this happen. Star Wars was a nice 70s/80s trilogy, why do you have to keep beating the dead horse?
  • Not sure if want
  • trulyrough
    Just don't follow Jar Jar
  • What? I think a sit-com called "Binks" would be A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
  • ^stupidest thing i've heard in a while
  • ....maybe my sarcasm didn't translate via the above text.
  • Another Star Wars series. This could be amazing, or this could be terrible. I also think that this series shouldn't be another in-between movies franchise. They should start fresh, like an origin of the jedi series (that would be amazing). I also hope that the writers working on it wrote the dialogue (not george lucas).

cha-ching.......George Lucas is at it again. Milking the greatest trilogy of time for everything its worth. If George Lucas was at all creative he would of come up with a new idea by now
  • Yeah, it's not like it's his franchise, from top to bottom.
  • c-dub
well I am pretty sure its not all his. IF lawerence Kasden didnt wirte Empire who knows where the franchise would have gone. Maybe JAr JAr would have been there instead of Billy D Williams
  • You're pretty sure it's not all his? You're going to go on record with that statement? "I'm pretty sure Star Wars does not all belong to George Lucas". Really?

It's all his. He can do whatever he wants.
  • Because Lucas has no new original ideas.
  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSS I can't wait for this! Funny thing is I was telling my friend at work that this was being planned. Now today I open /film and there is a post that casting has begun lol This being on HBO has some serious potential.
  • I don't think it will be on HBO, I think it was Spike...
  • DerekJames
Yeah, I was just talking to a friend about this yesterday as well. After not even thinking about it for many months. We must have felt some news coming.
  • It'll probably be on Fox seeing as they distribute his films.
  • Cat
Sounds like it will be good if it's as dark as they say.

Minor characters? Fuck it, I want Boba Fett.
  • Well, my idea was kind of a joke. A joke just like this franchise is now.
  • oobidoobbanoobi
the problem is, that the mistery behind our beloved characters is being spelled out for us word for word; and in my mind, wreaking those images. To much info!!! Bring back the wonder. It's like finding the Holy Grail and it's a paper cup!
  • Dustan Brennan
    This is gonna suck.
  • I would love to be excited for this, but I am definitely in "wait and see" mode. There has been too much disappointment, still, there is a sliver of hope...lol...the premise sounds awesome; however the execution is what matters.
  • Yay Star Wars....right?
  • I'm hoping that Lucas does the writing, fallowed by someone else does a rewrite that likes Star Wars, then ANYONE other than Lucas Does the directing.
  • Who does these days? I mean really.
  • No one seems to, but that doesn't make it right. Acceptance of every piece of crap that is put out will leave any reason to strive for anything new.
  • Yeah Rose Byrne is awesome, Sunshine, yeah boy! Also I think I may be one of the few here who is really excited about Knowing. Proyas+cool concept+good cast=really frickking good.
  • This is great news! I was really excited about this when I heard about it a couple of years ago. I'm glad they're actually making this. :)
  • Simon Pegg expressed interest in writing an episode or so. That would be marvelous.
  • Yeah, he wrote a college thesis on how C3PO might be gay...

I thought somebody said it was going to be more like "The Wire" in the Star Wars universe. Didn't George Lucas himself mention "The Wire" before? Anyways if you want a character driven story that's gritty that has a underworld element then I'd model it after "The Wire" since it's about 100 times better then both "Deadwood" and "The Sopranos" and unlike those over rated shows "The Wire" actually deserved all the acclaim it got and was somewhat under rated. Except for Season 5. That was over rated and didn't deserve nearly any of the acclaim it got.
  • Frank
I have yet to watch "The Sopranos" but Deadwood is not not at all overrated. Of course, The Wire is the best show ever so it's not as good as the The Wire but I still enjoy Deadwood very much, And this is coming from someone who thought theyd never like another tv show after I watched The Wire. But Deadwood is excellent.

Anyway, the only way this show could come close to being good is if it were actually on HBO or Showtime.
  • thehick
nothing wrong with sopranos, one of the better tv shows out there, not thats theres many
  • Yes! New examples of wooden acting every week!
  • Solid
Seriously George, I will pay you to give up on star wars. It's been 10 years since tpm ruined my life you jackass. I hate you and I want you to just stop torturing us now... We're done professionally!
  • i just 1 upped your comment from a -1 to a 0, but i didnt read the end, i wish your comment had -10, STOP QUOTING CHRISTIAN BALE. THOSE QUOTES ONLY MAKE HIM LIKE THE COOLEST PERSON ON EARTH.
  • Justin
If george lucas hires david simon to write basic story and dialogue while he chooses locations and deals with the special effects, that would be ideal.
  • this is pretty exciting news. glad to see this is moving forward. i have been pleasantly surprised by the animated Clone Wars show and cant wait to hear more about this one

and to all the Lucas haters, get over it! whats done is done. find something to enjoy about the new material or let it go. Lucas has done so much for the film making industry he will always have my respect
  • SaeseeTom
Rogues, deserts, moisture vaporators and speeder bikes... this could be sweeeeet, not to mention a tighter budget would mean REAL stormtroopers.

As for 'too much' Star Wars...
Trek ran for 10 movies (11 now, rebooted) AND 5 series for who-knows-how-many seasons. And they're splitting the last Harry Potter story into two parts - making a grand total of 8 films for that franchise.

Everyone overreacts with SW, looking at the original trilogy with rose-tinted glasses. Lay off The Beard.
  • imagine a law and order type star wars with jedi solving crimes. HA!
  • Solid
OK IT WAS MY FIRST TIME USING THE BALE QUOTE, PAL. I THOUGHT IT'D BE FUNNY BUT I GUESS IT'S BECOME STALE. SO CHILLAX.
  • i take back what i said. you are a reasonable person
