Could Alexander Skarsgard Be Marvel’s Thor?

thor casting

First of all, the following story is speculative and circumstantial at best, and as such, should not be considered more than a rumor at this point… but we’ll bite. LatinoReview had discounted a rumor previously floating around that actor Alexander Skarsgård was in line for the role of Marvel’s Thor, but today they received a tip that Thor director Kenneth Branagh was spotted having lunch with Skarsgård and a couple unrecognizable gentleman. Could this confirm that the True Blood star is in line for the role?

Stellan Skarsgård’s son sure fits the previously released casting description, and definitely looks the part:

Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD. Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severely humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature hero of our film. (via: Corona)

Also, Skarsgård and Branagh have the same agency representation (Endeavor Agency). But bottom line is, it could just be one big coinicidence.

However, let’s pretend for a second that Skarsgård is in line for the role. Do you think he would make a good Thor? I always assumed that Thor would have a bigger star as the lead actor, but who knows? Maybe Marvel believes that the comic property will sell the movie. Besides, Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t considered a bankable actor when he was cast in Iron Man, right?

He was amazing in Generation Kill. I immediately thought "this guys gonna be a star" after seeing him in that. Ironically I thought he'd make a good Captain America, but seeing him with long hair from that photo, he definitely works for Thor.
  • He would probably make an ok Thor, but a big name might do more for the movie. Although I'll take good actor over big name any day of the week, if both cannot be had. Bottom line, I trust Branagh to pick the right man.
  • Wasn't he one of Zoolanders model roommates?
  • A quick IMDB check says yes. Good eye.
  • Yes, as soon as I saw him in this scene, I knew this was our future THOR.[youtube 2xXaYj33F0A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xXaYj33F0A youtube]
  • See when I saw this scene, that's what I thought about Ben Stiller.
  • I see it and hope it's true. He was awesome in Generation Kill and have been saying he should be thor. I really hope this is true.
  • A quick IMDB check says yes.

His dads an awesome actor too. You know since they cast a no name they're going to cast up on the supporting cast big time. Expect a big name to play Loki.
  • freemachine
The henchman from the original Die Hard would have been my first pick, but he's too old at this point. "Ho, ho, ho, now I have a machine gun".
  • Oscar
  • Palmer
I can see it. If he muscle up enough he can pass as Thor. Or...if he doesn't muscle up maybe Donald Blake. And even another OR! Hank Pym aka Ant-Man aka Giant-Man aka Goliath aka Yellow Jacket aka The Wasp II!
  • gah
Hmm...do you think they'll cast two different people as Donald Blake and Thor?
  • icko
him as thor and the journey man guy (forgot his name) as donald blake?
  • Palmer
I hope so, and that's if they decide to go the Donald Blake route.
  • icko
i would like to see the thor as a separate entity route rather than the ultimates where there is no donald blake
  • shoot hamaguchi
Awesome choice. He was great in Generation Kill and he was one of the few good things in True Blood. Hoping this happens
  • I don't know shi- about Thor. But everything about the character, at least superficially, screams HIRE VERY TALENDTED UNKOWN.
  • donTom
Oh, and he's scandinavian too... so he can talk swedish or whatever wiht his pals in Valhalla! At least the origins are right!
  • Joppe
I really hope he gets the part. He was great in Generation Kill and I much rather see a talented unknown than a superstar who probably don't care about the part.
  • me too. I think Skarsgard will do Thor a lot of justice.

Choosing an unknown actor also keeps audiences from projecting traits/qualities of the actor onto the character. I think that this would be especially true with Thor, because not many people have read or seen his material, and a big name actor could mislead people.

I can see him playing a random Viking, but he somehow has the wrong kind of presence for Thor if that makes any sense.

I'd still rather see Dillahunt or McKidd in the role, the age issue aside.
  • obin
    a viking cast as a viking :D

he would most certanly be great in the role (fit at least way better than some random american hollywood bigname would)
  • He was hands down the most bad-ass character on True Blood... in a very good way. I would go see him as Thor.
  • A Swede playing Thor... It sounds about right! Alex would make a great Thor! Or "Tor" as we say in Sweden...
  • EricsTXGal
Alexander Skarsgard would be an excellent Thor, for all the reasons already mentioned! Having watched all of his movies that I could get my hands on after seeing him in True Blood I discovered that his screen presence is totally captivating. Generation Kill proved his chops, as he often had to convey so much with simply his eyes, which he did superbly. I watched Last Drop, embarrassed to say sped through it, but amazingly was able to stop the moment he came on screen because he dominates. Isn't that what we want in a superhero? Domination?
  • TrueBlood2009
I'm with you EricsTxGal. And sorry, but to millions of True Blood viewers, he is not an unknown. Does anyone know how his popularity has grown since playing Eric in True Blood? I think he would be an excellent Thor, as stated in your post, he has the eyes for it!

Well, the script was clearly written with a big, young actor in mind so the rumors about Pitt, Craig and McKidd all sounded strange to me. Skarsgard has been a fan favorite for a long time and I have the feeling he got some push on the fan boards to get him visibility, as he was probably the lead candidate for the role.
They will find name actors for all the other Gods, like Odin, Loky and the Warriors Three.
  • He's a great actor. Would be fun to se his father play Odin and his little brother Gustaf play Loki. After all. This is nordic mythology and therefor there should be nordic actors! :)
  • I remember similar reservations being brought up when Toby McGuire was cast as Spiderman. I mean, the guy who starred in Cider House Rules, cast as one of the most iconic superheroes of all time? If anything, comic book movies have shown that one movie can turn a mild-mannered actor into an international superstar.
  • What reservations? We all seem to generally give him a thumbs up, no? Are you giving reservations, Dave?
  • I think i'm one of the few that didn't have any reservations about Tobey McGuire, he didn't have any prior experience in such a role...but he IS Peter Parker. Now that he's been cast, I couldn't imagine anyone else.
  • Gleek
Thought McGuire did a decent job, but I had always thought that Topher Grace would have been better. (I always pictured Parker as bean pole lean (spider like) and certainly funnier)
  • Maguire was horrible as Spiderman and those Spiderman movies are rubbish.
  • Agreed. He's a complete bad ass on True Blood.
  • Alexander Skarsgård would be absolutely perfect for this role! I think that he has all the qualities of Thor, the arrogance, charisma, and sheer power. Also, other than True Blood, he hasn't really been able to show his talent off. I also like Stellan Skarsgård for Odin, I'm not sure who Gustaf is but, that would be awesome if they kept it all Nordic and all Skarsgårds

Alexander Skarsgard is perfect as Thor this rumor been floating around for awhile but i consider him as Thor instead of Triple H
  • It think its a great idea to get a sum-what-unknown to be Thor, since they won't be asking for too much is a sequel is made
  • HE is so hot.... I don't give a shit about Thor, though. who cares? lol
  • Albert Brodsky.
Could they super-impose his head on a giant body like Benjamin Button? If not, get him some growth hormones stat.
  • They could do the same as with Dr. Manhattan.

    just kidding, that would suck!
  • Enthropii
He certainly feels the part. Needs to add some bulk though.
  • Mark Kuykendall
The dude is 6'4" and has pretty broad shoulders. If they put him on a carb heavy diet and get him hitting the weights he can put on a lot of muscle and look the part. Add a little more height with boots and helmet, broaden his shoulders with armor and cape, and he'll be taller and bigger than whoever they cast as Cap, and we're good for Avengers. He can act, that's critical, and he's got the accent. I say go for it.
  • he looks lie an american gladiator.
  • Yes, please! Ever since this rumor popped up I've hoped that it would eventually become true. Could the constent speculation finally become fact? -fingers crossed-
  • Elana
I think he'd do great as Thor, but apparently he's a bit old for the role. And I don't like the fact that he's already playing a Viking (vampire) in True Blood. It wouldn't be good for his career to be the "guy who always plays vikings and marines". I'd love to see him doing something else. Don't get me wrong, he has the looks and is a great actor. The role would be a blast for him, but what will his next role be? Another nordic killer??
  • Seeing as he's played a Marine I don't think it would be too hard for him to bulk up. I think he even served in the Swedish Marines for national service.
  • canasian
Yes! Perfect! This is what I've been waiting for!
  • Dude puts on a few more pounds of muscle and I can def see him as Thor...
