Do you remember the musical rooster with a lute in the Disney Robin Hood toon? That was Alan-a-Dale, the narrator-sidekick and a character who has had a fairly minor role, if any role at all, in most versions of the legend. He’s going to turn up in the new Ridley Scott rendition, however, and the part has just been cast. To confuse idiot journalists everywhere, the man to take up the role has the name Alan Doyle which - this side of Neighbors and Ugly Betty at least - is probably the closest modern name to the made-up minstrel’s funny ol’ handle.

Alan Doyle is the frontman for Great Big Sea, a group of Candian folk rockers that I had, until now, only heard of when I wasn’t fully paying attention. I guess I’ll have to Spotify them and put myself right/put myself off [delete as appropriate].

According to The National Post’s Ampersand column, Russell Crowe is likely to have pulled some strings to get Doyle the role. They’ve known eachother since 2005 and Doyle even contributed to Crowe’s album My Hand, My Heart. They quote Doyle as saying:

If you’re working on a new house and you have friends who know how to plaster, you hire your friends who can plaster. If you’re doing a movie and you need a dude who can play the lute, you phone your friend who can play the lute.

I doubt Doyle will have much of a part - he’s staying on tour until days before shooting starts, has yet to see a script and has no idea what music he’ll be performing. Perhaps he’s just part of a subplot, and very possibly in a version of the tale that originally introduced the character. In that one, Allan A’Dayle’s childhood sweetheart (sometimes named Ellen) is being married to some old Knight she doesn’t want to be with, Robin interrupts the Bishop of Hereford’s ceremony, reunites the young lovers and then performs a wedding for the two of them himself; soon it was adapted that Friar Tuck performs their wedding, which is the tack I’d expect Scott to take.

My gut-pandering choice for the role might have been Glenn Hansard - providing he could do the accent - but Doyle seems like a pretty wise bet too.

I called the character both Alan-a-Dale and Allan A’Dayle. Those are but two of his many names and, heck, I just couldn’t settle. If I’d gone on for longer, I could have probably managed at least three more without recourse to wikipedia, and possibly dozens with. Those old balladeers really needed to standardise.

This has now officially jumped to my top 3 must sees. Crowe, Blanchett and now the lead singer of one of my absolutely favourite bands. Awesome.
  • They should do a cover of Bryan Adams' song that was killer back in the early 90s for that OTHER Robin Hood movie which suddenly became very uncool. Or, sorry, 'not dark enough'. All these reboots/rehashes/remakes/do-overs/re-imaginings all boast that they will be much darker. Then turns out they rarely are. What is up with that??
  • A most unexpected surprise, I couldn't think of anybody who would be better in that roll. Check out the band too, they are awesome, and words can't do justice to how fun they are to see live. I try and schedule my business travel around where they are touring in the US because they play arenas here in Canada and bars south of the border. Check them out if you get a chance, you won't be disapointed.

this is great news, great big sea is an awesome band, can't wait to see doyle's performance
  • sounds good....let's hope more casting occurs and we actually see this film get made before 2010...as cool as having a member of Great Big Sea in a minor role is...what about Little John, Friar Tuck and Will Scarlett ?....
  • the casting they've done thus far sounds good. I'm glad they cleared up that bologna about Crowe being both hood and Guy.

  • I hope this turns out to be an exceptional film. I've liked most of the takes on Robin Hood. Men in Tights still one of my favories.
  • gah
Judging by that photo this guy can rock a frickin soul patch like no other.
  • I got my first CD player when I was 8 specifically to listen to Great Big Sea and Ron Sexsmith. Great Big Sea's Play is still one of my favorite albums.

Also Robin Hood is my favorite film in Disney's animated cannon.

My hype crashed and burned when the "Nottingham-pov" was seemingly removed.
Now with this news the hype is up a little bit... I'm still disappointed though.

Russell Crowe and Alan Doyle have a history… a few years ago Alan produced a CD for Russell (in Oz). Aparently when Russell was making Mystery Alaska he heard Great Big Sea and later met the group at a concert. Russell came to Newfoundland as a guest of Doyle and they performed a one time concert at O’Reilly’s pub on George St. I guess the mutual admiration is still there. Good luck to both of them and to the potential film.

I have worked with Great Big Sea before and actually, I shot that clip you posted. Alan was the easiest to get along with.

Not very likely that you shot that video.

LOVE great Big Sea and cannot wait to see this movie. Just read Alan's last blog about wrapping up the filming, it sounded like it was a great time.
  • I have been following Alan's "From the Road" on the Great Big Sea website and he says that the movie was finished Aug. 7th or around then. I am soooo excited to see this movie. I love Robin Hood, Russell Crowe, and especially Alan Doyle. GBS are the best and Alan is the perfect pick for a bard (with his excellent voice) that plays the lute (in real life)! Can't wait til 2010! Oh, going to a GBS concert with my 11 and 9 year old sons (4th GBS concert with the fellas) Thursday night in Cohasset, Ma.

I have been so anxious to see this movie. I don't even care about the others. I am just excited that Alan (who is my favourite celebrity) is going to be in a movie.
By the way, I doubt that you shot that video because it was taken by more than one camera at once.
