stranglehold

John Woo’s production company Lion Rock Entertainment is developing a big screen sequel to the classic 1992 Hong Kong action film Hard Boiled. Screenwriters Jeremy Passmore (Special) and Andre Fabrizio (upcoming John Carpenter film The Prince) are penning the adaption of the Woo-produced 2007 video game Strangehold, which was an official sequel to Hard Boiled and featured star Chow Yun-Fat reprising his role as hard-boiled cop Inspector “Tequila” Yuen. I assume the film  being developed for American audiences, as American screenwriters are attached. Which makes me wonder if this would be a real sequel to Hard Boiled, or a stand-alone film which could function as a sequel to Hard Boiled in an alternative universe where the first film took place in the United States (and some people thought Watchmen was confusing?).

The original film has garnered cult status and is considered one of the greatest and most influential action films of all time (#9) and of the the top cult films of all time (#18) by Entertainment Weekly . Empire Magazine said that it was “more exciting than a dozen Die Hard’s” and even went on to include the film’s lead protagonist, Tequila, as #33 on their list of the greatest movie characters of all time. The film includes a famous action sequence in a burning hospital that was shot in one long take lasting 2 minutes and 42 seconds with a single handheld camera. If you haven’t seen Hard Boiled, you really should. Normally I’d recommend Netflixing the movie, but this time I’m going to tell you just to buy it — there is no excuse not to own it. Amazon is selling copies of the double disc Ultimate edition for around $11. Strangely enough, the PlayStation 3 version of the Collector’s Edition of Stranglehold contains the only high-definition version of the film currently available as a bonus option.

The official box description of the game offers the following plot description: “Honor is his code. Vengeance is his mission. Bloodshed is his only option…” … “Ensnared by a crime boss with a gripping secret, Inspector Tequila is forced to cross the line from sworn duty to bloody revenge.” … “Tequila’s loyalties to the force are tested when his ex-wife is kidnapped by the Russian mob in Chicago. Tequila struggles to balance his duty to uphold the law with doing what it takes to save his family. Carve a unique path of massive destruction and use the environment as a weapon against your enemies. The highly modified Unreal 3.0 engine breathes new life into game environments and characters with stunning graphics & an ever-changing battleground.”

The news was buried within a THR article from three days ago (and somehow no one noticed?!) about a remake of the Chuck Norris Vietnam action film Missing in Action, which the same screenwriters are penning for MGM and WWE.

  • thats awesome, John Woo makes great movies, Hollywood is always ripping off his style.
  • Woo would be the first one to admit steeling from both Asian and Western directors himself...hehehe...every director steels and is influenced by other's work...
  • Isn't that what his game was?
  • So it's a game movie!?

Those writers are lucky as hell. Good for them. They deserve it.
  • This is a palmface the game already came out well he worded it wrong if its may be the 2nd game idk.
  • as long as both John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat are inovlved I'll be happy...I never played the game but it looked great I was surprised it was never adapted into a film...here's hoping!

Wow, I recall seeing the Killer way back in high school and thinking that Woo was exactly what American action movies needed. He seems to have gone relatively quite recently, so it's nice to see that his comeback film will be getting back to basics.

If this is an American production, hopefully it's going to be gritty as hell. Chow Yun-Fat is fine doing drama and comedy but he is best as a gritty mofo.

My life will be complete when i witness Hardboiled 2. I also heard Woo was directing tom clancy's Rainbow Six, that would be a match made in heaven. MI2 crossed with Hardboiled

Maybe I read the article wrong, but I don't see where it says that John Woo will actually be directing this movie. I hope that's the case, but I have a feeling it won't be.
  • Peter, is Woo going to direct or do we still not know that?
  • fonz
Yes this is very important to know.
  • That hospital scene was pretty great. I understand how hard it must have been to shoot, making it an even better scene.

I personally still have to go with the alley scene in Oldboy, where he takes on the entire gang with a hammer as best action scene ever.
  • One of my favorites. That hospital scene is so insane. It boggles my mind. I love it when his leg catches on fire and the baby pees it out. Gold.

I'm a huge fan of the movie and the game. And as an added bonus, if you but the special edition of the video game for PS3, you get a Blu-Ray copy of Hard Boiled. :)
  • I love the hospital scene.

"What the hell is ammunition anyway?" =D
  • I always loved John Woos movies. And i always will.
  • Now this can either go two ways. 1) John Woo himself sits back down in the directorial chair while his production company develops and we get two hours of pure gun-toting-mind-blowing-limb-flowing action that would make the small child in every male giggle like a little girl. Or 2) a two-bit American director is sadly given the helm and we have 'Die Hard 5.0' except with an Asian lead. Please be numero uno!!
  • Goro
Hardboiled is one of the great Heroic Bloodshed HK movies of the 90s, perhaps even archetypal, and so i'm not looking forward to a watering down of it. Why a sequel? Why not just go forward with another movie?

While RED CLIFF was far better than anything Woo's done in the US, I'm still feeling like he's not the same director he was when he did Killer, Hardboiled, ABT, BitH.

I'm not fond of sequels and remakes and i'm not fond of this just b/c it's a HK sequel.

I'll reserve final judgement for when there's actual footage to praise or complain about! :)

I somewhat agree with what Goro is saying but making a movie in the US is different than making a movie in HK. It was acknowledged that the time The Killers release would 've been the first action movie to be given the first X rating for the amount of violence. The difference is between making movies in Hollywood and HK is that they don''t give him enough creative control to do whatever he wanted. Woo often quoted 'too many meetings from big name studios'. That he needs permission before filming a scene where as in Hong Kong you just do it. Even on his American debut he qouted how he often collided with producers and his star Jean Claude Van Damme.
  • YOO
    it's *steAls*.
  • LAT_SAU_SAN_TAAM
This is, imho, the best action movie ever made. Please, make this not suck. Don't kill my dreams.
  • thank a lot
