lady

There’s been a whole lot of Danny Boyle in the news these last couple of weeks and now, I’m afraid to say, here comes another lump. Open up.

Rumors bubbling up at the EW Hollywood Insider blog suggest that Danny Boyle is closing in on a remake of My Fair Lady. This rehash already has a script, penned by Emma Thompson, and will once again be a musical. I suspect a lot of /Film readers will be disappointed to read that Boyle’s desire to net the Lady gig will see him shelving Hanna, a more readily geek-appealing story of a teenage assassin.

All I really know about Hanna is in that previous sentence. Got anything else to add? Not sure how a teen assassin would work. Well, outside of Leon/The Professional anyway. Would love to find out.

Late last year, Knightley was considering the role of Eliza Dolittle in Lady - as per Anne Thompson. No idea if she’s still in orbit, but if I were her agent I’d pat myself on the back for the Never Let Me Go contract and throw myself down the stairs for getting her in talks for My Fair Lady. It sounds like a joke, a parody - Keira Knightley as Eliza Dolittle, brought to you by French and Saunders. And not even for Comic Relief this time.

The original My Fair Lady is hardly one of my favourites, but George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, the original original, is pretty darn fly-free and could prove a solid guide for any future attempt to tell the tale, singalong or not.

Emma Thompson’s script for Sense and Sensibility seemed a lot better before Andrew Davies had a go at one himself for the BBC, but I’m still pretty keen on it. Nanny McPhee… no. Not keen on that at all. But I’m reckoning she’s got the stuff to do a fair take on Lady.

Do we really need another My Fair Lady? Honestly?

I don't really get this one either...I can almost understand studios wanting to do all these horror remakes as there is always a market for those. Is ANYONE really screaming for more My Fair Lady?
  • Danny
Boyle very recently (maybe an hour ago?) denied all rumors, including Bond, Fair Lady and Lady Vengeance. I'm guessing he probably won't commit to anything for a little while...
  • Boyle can do whatever the f he wants to. i'll still check it out.

That's good news to my ears. Please don't commit to My Fair Lady. I mean if people are so dire to see it why can't America just rent the original? Its cheaper than $10 a movie ticket and won't include Kira Knightly's (or whoever) standard issue period-piece acting. The first one had Audrey Hepburn!!!
  • So no 28 Months later?
  • Well, he didn't do 28 Weeks Later so why would he be doing 'Months'?
  • but he did guide/produce 28 weeks later.
  • He said he may direct Months..
  • Honestly as much as I love the original there were definitely some flaws. It will be hard to cast (Patrick Wilson maybe), but I do not think it is a horrible idea and in the hands of Boyle there might be some hope. I would not be surprised if it was fake, but I am intrigued.
  • Yes, he can. But, everyone knows a My Fair Lady remake won't be as much of an iconic film as the original. I think he should really just leave this one alone... But, if I were to choose anyone for this, I would have to choose him.
  • I'ts probably least favorite of Audrey Hupburns movies. By the way, my lord she was beautiful.
  • As a fan of Pygmalion I find the idea of 2 My Fair Lady musicals insulting. How many times can people miss the point?
  • As long as zombie Audrey Hepburn gets the part.
  • I think it sounds a heck of a lot better than a teenage assasin movie. And while this particular one may not be the right one for a go, I would LOVE to see Boyle direct a musical. His films have such a vitality, and he is so clearly passionate about and adept at using music in his films--I think he would be really well suited for a musical, and he could do a lot with one.
  • The way musicals have had their little comeback recently, the studio is likely clambering to get this out ASAP. It would be a shame to see this happen, although very intriguing to see how it turns out... and that right there is how remakes make their money. People can't resist but to watch and compare - even if it is a train wreck every time.

Ugh, what happened to Boyle and Fincher this year? Sold their souls for Oscar glory. I wanted to see him do Bond. Show Marc Forrester how it's done.
  • sean
@Danny...do you have a link to where Boyle denied rumors of him directing My Fair Lady?
  • freemachine
The original version WON 8 OSCARS!!! What the hell is Boyle thinking? Certain films, especially those that take home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, should never be remade---no exceptions!

Could you (or Boyle) imagine someone remaking Slumdog in forty years? What an insult.
  • I agree, it's such a huge insult.
  • fuck that musical. Fuck that noise.

Hanna was on the 2006 Blacklist. Actually thought it was a messy convoluted script. Surprised all the attention it had, but it seemed to have died down till this mention of Danny Boyle directing.
Its about a father who is an assassin on the run and has been training his 14 year daughter the ways of the lethal killer. Then the evil people find his hide out, he gets captured and she goes on the run across the world, killing those who get in her way of rescuing her dad and learning a deep dark secret.

my fair lady is classic movie.its unique.my fair lady = audrey hepburn.why do they remake?are they lost mind? i hate when people make remake to classic movies, like audrey hepburn movies, hitchcock movies (hah, they can't near hitchcock.he is legend of horror)
  • That was also the report in which he claimed not knowing how these rumours started despite me having heard his voice, coiming our of his mouth, talking about some of these films.

    Though not Bond.
  • SmokeTown
Wait was this the one with a white guy in yellow face? I cant remember because they are so f-ing stupid there is no way to differentiate. If so though, I hope they retain THAT part of the story because it is SO integral to the plot.

Things about these films that would make them more watchable for me is to see all of these complex human emotions about love and money and melodrama resulting in the girl getting with the man of her dreams to suddenly cut to a child walking out of a house in Iraq that has just been fire bombed. The kid would be on fire and screaming in some language the audience would not be able to decipher and then it should cut back to these intense emotions about love and what true suffering is.
  • I may be one of the few that wouldn't turn my nose up at a musical directed by Danny Boyle, but why oh why does it have to be My Fair Lady?

How about a musical that needs a remake... like Xanadu?
  • Boyle is a great director and could make this a very good film (again), but I want to see more original work. That's where he shines the brightest. In my opinion.
  • Kelly
First off, I'm getting sick and tired of remakes.

I'm a musical geek, I admit it, and My Fair Lady is one of my favorites... but I certainly don't want a new one.

Something new and original would be great.
  • I also don't think a remake - especially as a musical again - makes any sense, but on the other hand I could imagine Anne Hathaway or Zooey Deschanel in the role of Eliza Doolittle.
