A Couple Of Dicks: Warner Bros Doesn’t COP Out

a couple of dicks

Earlier this week word leaked out that Kevin Smith would be directing A Couple of Dicks starring Tracy Mogan and Bruce Willis. The next day the trades confirmed the reports but also claimed that the film’s title was changed to “A Couple of Cops”. A lot of people thought the new title was extremely stupid, including us.

Good news. Today I received word from my studio sources that Warner Bros has decided to keep the film’s original title after all. Who knows if that will change later on, but right now that is the project’s title.

Written by Robb and Marc Cullen, and featured on the 2008 Black List (a Hollywood insider list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year), A Couple of Dicks tells the story of “two veteran LAPD detectives attempt to track down a stolen, mint-condition, 1952 baseball card.” The film is tentatively scheduled January 29th 2010 release date.

  • cop out? nice one.
  • I guess we were all stressing for nothing. Maybe when pre-production starts and another rumor comes out that the title has once again changed, we can overreact once again.

Sheesh. It's Kevin Smith for Christ sake! What's the studio thinking? Moviegoers know what to expect from Smith's films and he has his audience. The marketing guys need to take that stiff metal pole out of their a....
  • great news. the moms who don't like it can suck it.
  • Cool, the power of the internet being used to tell studios what not too do.

  • oh I voted Chris Rock... but RDJ would be excellent, too. <3 him
  • I don't think Tracy Morgan can be funny as anyone other than Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock...

    I voted Craig Robinson though.
  • May the Dick jokes continue...
  • There are a plenty already. It's amazing that Smith would sign off on directing this. Even though the version I read is over a 1 1/2 year old, the flick is essentially 'Lethal Weapon 2' without any sort of memorable dialogue.
  • The studio execs probably realized the first title would sell more tickets.
  • Way to go WB, keep us happy until we're over-excited to see it and will be going regardless, then rename it to whatever the hell you want...
  • Of course. It's a Kevin Smith movie, so they know it will make a killing on DVD.

Why is it when someone writes the words "Good News" I immediately imagine the rest of the story being read in the professors voice from Futurama?
  • im a HUGE Kevin Smith fan. i love all his movies and thought Zack and Miri was extremely funny. i dont know if i have ever laughed so hard in the theater. i will definately go see this

but i hope Kevin Smith can eventually get financing together for Red State. i was really interested in seeing him do that. he also talked about doing a "space comedy" w/ Seth Rogen at one point too. id like to see that eventually as well

Indeed, WB heads probably heard of the grief and probably just decided it's best ($) to change it last-minute, if at all. (So lame if they do.) But at least they all know we like Dicks and don't like Cop-outs.

Oh what a relief, for a moment there I was worried he'd have no excuses for why his next movie flops.
Now he can just people for being scared of the word dick like porno.

Oh I kid, I kid lol. Seeing Tracy in a leading role of a Smitty film should be fun. And he brought Bruno along for the ride!
  • Kevin Smith is going to rock this one, go Warner Bros for not pussing out.
  • Yeah, I mean they could always pull a Zack and Miri and shorten it on posters and what not...

if Smith filmed that, he might actually get an audience.
